Can we hope that those motorway signs switched/left on in error will be a thing of the past?

"The centre, run by the Highways Agency, can then update warning signs and radio traffic reports, or send out officers to help the flow. "

they should have added "but any officers sent out will of course be affected by delays (like the 20% of UK motorists affected by congestion ) so will arrive too late to do anything useful."

Sorry but it's PR spin...

It's run by the Government, it is centralised not localised and there are lots of computers in it somewhere - you will not notice a change, not for the better anyway! Hope, but hope in vain!

Many of the major holdups are caused by accidents.

IMO the reason why Britain is affected far more than Germany of France is that our police operate on a different set of guidelines to our Continental cousins in the aftermath of an accident.

I fully accept that the police are following the protocols laid down by ????

The ???? is what puzzles me? Is it our political masters that stipulate the lengthy procedures necessary(It can't be an EEC ruling) or the Police hierarchy?

Or is it the law requiring all evidence to be recorded in case an injury becomes a fatality and there's an inquest? Pugugly or Lawman may be able to, ahem, clear this up.

Another complete waste of the tax payers money !
Its properly got more managers than tescos and half the staff wouldnt know traffic flow if they were stuck in central London.

M4 Bus lane anyone !!!
Traffic centre aims to cut jams - cheddar
The M4 bus lane is completely illogical requiring buses etc to traverse the other lanes to get to the outside! lane before having to do the opposite when the get to the elevated. However I used that section of the M4 every day before and after it was installed along with the reduced speed limit (initially 50, then IIRC 60) and it did work, perhaps by coincidence not design, though it reduced my journey time. I think the key reason being that it effectively moved the point that the M4 went into two lanes.

The Highways Agency vehicles drive so slowly that they get overtaken by trucks, the overhead gantry sign cry wolf, and the traffic report tells me about something 150 miles away.

Never once, has any of the above made my life on a motorway easier.

oops, forgot to comment!

you're right, apparently there were bottlenecks at the junction before the redcution to 2 lanes and another bottleneck when it did reduce. the bus lane conveniently (?) removes one bottleneck and rather than waste the space, they made it a bus lane.

That's according to a road website, name of which escapes me, but it seemed logical to me.

From what I remember, in Paris they have a similar system around the Peripherique (the M25 equivalent I suppose) and it notifies drivers where problems are and even where next to turn off to avoid them.

What really helps is that the taxi drivers have this installed in their cabs and they can forecast their journey or take some avoiding action.

Unfortunately here we have gantries that flash '70' for unknown reasons for weeks on end...

Let's hope they can sort out the Traffic problems on the Dual Carriageway it is located at 1st !
