The car is a '98 Punto 75 Manual

The problem is the car is difficult getting into gear, especially when cold. Engaging reverse in the morning results in much crunching. Problem started about a year ago when the answer was to slip it into 1st or 2nd, lifting the clutch a little, depress clutch and then it would slip into reverse with no problem. However, now it is reluctant to go into any forward gear when cold. The answer now is to start engine in gear with the clutch depressed.

Car had new clutch and slave cylinder 18 months/6,000 miles ago. It has now done 60,000 miles. I bled the clutch today, with little improvement. No apparent leaks from the master cylinder. I haven?t yet checked the gearbox oil level, but thought I might change it anyway ? it?s meant to be done at 80,000. No oil leaks from the gearbox either.

So the questions are, any ideas as to the cause and, if I change the oil, should I replace it with SAE80W as specified, or go for something thinner?

Any advice, much appreciated.

Chicken Vindaloo

I've heard both the German TV agreement and the falling out story, so I can't really shed any more light on it. It would have been good though had he managed to get an interview with him via Bernie's daughter a few weeks ago...

Does anyone have any experience of their employer introducing the fitting of tracking systems to the company fleet?

My understanding is that this may necessitate amendments to employment contracts (according to a provider's website) and employee consultation is recommended prior to the installation.

If neither of things things have happened, where would someone stand if they refused to have the kit fitted/use the vehicle until proper procedure had been followed?

No, it's not me, in case you're wondering and although I usually belong to the school of 'nothing to hide, nothing to fear' in these 'Big Brother' issues, that's no excuse for taking your employees for granted. The Information Commissioner publishes a guide covering Monitoring at Work in relation to Data Protection & Human Rights, and the employer in question doesn't appear to have read it... Read more

The WorkSmart site (run by the TUC) gives some pretty clear advice on what employers can do in terms of monitoring of vehicles:

www.worksmart.org.uk/rights/viewquestion.php?eny=6...3

As the data obtained by use of the vehicle tracker is subject to the Data Protection legislation, there is also information on the Information Commissioners website:

...Are there any good ones on the internet?

I have a copy of the 2002 edition on my laptop and, whilst I am getting used to the basic workings of it I need:

1) a better working knowledge of it
2) more understanding of accountancy/book keeping in general.

I suspect a course or such like will help with 2 but, something that will help with both hand in hand would be great.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

Greetings. The Golf has spring an oil leak & the concrete driveway is sporting some lovely stains.

Now assuming that I fix this leak, what do the HJ collective suggest for removing the stains?

Last time I had to do this was when my 205 diesel dropped a bit, & I had it with washing up liquid, unfriendly bio persil, petrol. IIRC none of it really shifted it. More like 6 months later & a number of pressure washes. Odd really-petrol does such a brill job of degreasing anything else.

Don't they use cement dust on racing circuit tarmac, to mop up the oil instantly ?

I should imagine that not everybody wants a grey/white patch on their drive though !

My other half has been sent an email today that claims that every time a vehicle passes a camera whilst exceeding the speed limit by a small amount the 'offence' is recorded. It then says that once 20 such offences have been recorded a ticket will be issued for the next misdemeanour. It gives a website address where it is possible, apparently, to check the accumulated score for your vehicle.
I told the missus that this is a complete load of hokum. I don't see how a camera can record your number if it doesn't flash, and I don't think all cameras are linked into a database that could do the 'totting-up'.
She is getting a bit shirty with me because I don't believe the email, and says that she has looked up her own vehicle on the website. I refuse to do this because I suspect that this is some scam intended to get vehicle details off the unwary or to allow a virus to infect the computer.

Any comments? Read more

In that case I agree with you then.

Cheers for the heads up on the normal location. I work at the Uni, although I don't normally go over 70 so I don't know what I'm worried about...

Was a bit 'enthusiastic' today on the bike on the way home though :-S

It's a loong time since I passed my driving test, and I think that was more by luck than anything else. Since then, I have (fingers crossed) been involved in only two accidents, both minor, and both while reversing. (In one, I nudged and cracked someone's numberplate, but t'other scrunched the other car's door, which cost a few hundred to fix).

Learning how to reverse properly may be difficult: limited rear visibility makes my Almera the hardest car to reverse of any I have driven regularly. But even if I just concentrate on going forwards, I'm sure that my driving has plenty of room for improvement.

So I have ordered a copy of Roadcraft, and intend to study it carefully ... but I still think I could benefit from help from someone qualified, so I intend to try to take an advanced driving test.

However, I have been reading other backroom threads on this and see that there is a choice between doing it with the IAM or with RoSPA. (www.iam.org.uk and www.roada.org )

Both appear to base their approach on Roadcraft, and both seem to test for similar things. The IAM just notes pass/fail, whereas RoSPA grades its passes as Gold/Silver/Bronze and (unlike the IAM) seeks a retest every three years.

The IAM local groups are a bit closer than the nearest RoSPA group, but (apart from distance) I am rather put off by the fact that the nearest IAM group meets in the British Legion club. I have nowt against the British Legion - they do great work -- but they do tend to be rather old and conservative sorta people. I have plenty of friends in that category, but I'm not sure how I feel about them observing my driving; I have visions of a white-moustached man in a blazer with an AA badge on his lapel disparaging my lack of driving gloves and muttering things about "girls" driving.

Apart from that, has anyone any recommendations on the choice between the IAM and RoSPA?

(Yes, I have read previous threads:

NW,

None of the observers from either organisation will give you a problem. Their driving has to be good to start with - and by that I mean a good pass level for whichever advanced org. they are with. If personalities get in the way or any thing you're unhappy about, they should change the person allocated with no fuss. When I ran training for the IAM in the SouthWest in the 80's myself we (police and civilian team) selected our best drivers and then found which of those couldnt "instruct" (term used advisedly"). Part of the fun for the members was the chance to do Sunday runs in the patrol vehicle (as passengers), experiencing a skilled drive at speed c/w commentary...that always impressed. Even easier with RoADA - grades already known take Gold and Diploma holders and ensure Gold guys have the ability (Diplomas will have been proven, hence their higher greade again).

Whatever you do, you will enjoy it :-)

I have a 98 Ford Fiesta Ghia X 1.4 which I am looking to sell as I now have a company car. I recently had it MOT'd and it failed on a leaking o/s front shock absorber which will now need replacing. I am under the impression that you will need to replace the other front shock absorber otherwise the vehicle will feel imbalanced. As I am selling the vehicle I want to keep expenditure down as much as possible so I would like to know from anyone with any experience in this matter - is it really necessasry to get both front shocks replaced or can I get away with just the one done?. Turn it to your advantage.

Replace both shocks and present the prospective buyer with MOT/receipts that prove you haven't skimped on maintenance?

Anyone been watching it on Discovery Realtime?

Some of the prices of the crash damaged cars and later repairs seem a bit optimistic and possibly falsified in the interests of meeting the budgets.

Interesting though to see some of the body repair techniques used to repair the cars though.
