Going to replace the starter motor on my car this afternoon and I have ramps and axel stands.
Got me wondering what is the safest and what is the most preferred? Read more

Ramps are useful for minor jobs like changing the oil, but no use at all if the wheels must be removed. For changing brake pads, they're no use at all. I bought a set of resin moulded ramps a while back as they had a low enough profile to fit under the low front spoiler of the car. They easily support the Mitsubishi Galant, and worked just as well on the Jaguar XJ12, which is one of the heaviest cars around.
Axle stands are much more useful for major jobs like gearbox removal or brake disc changes, where the front suspension must be disturbed. The height of axle stands is (usually) adjustable, while ramps are fixed, and generally lower than stands.

Thanks guys for all your responses. Unfortunately I haven't yet got the answer I am looking for - my fault.

I should have made it clear I'm looking for a rust curing product. I have a car with a large patch of bubbling paint. Underneath that the bare metal will probably be rusty/pitted. I need a suitable product to prime the bare metal before repainting. Read more

There is this green gel stuff in Halfords (not jenolite but next to it) that you paint on after scraping the loose paint. It works well, and will give you a shiny metal surface If it's pitted, use JB Weld (also in Halfords with glues) smear a light layer over the damage, and leave to cure, then sand of with a block, prime and paint. Good luck. the rust will probably come back as it's like mould in cheese.

This vehicle currently has the factory fitted Bridgestone Dueler 689 tyres 255/70/R15 however they are pretty much useless off road and are due for replacement soon anyway.

I want to fit Goodrich TA KO?s tyres 50/50 road/off road, however to do that I would have to fit them on 16inch rims 235/70/R16.

Apart from a possible problem with my insurance company, would they treat this as an unacceptable modification? Would fitting these tyres cause any other problems for the vehicle i.e. handling, speedometer inaccuracy, gearbox stress?

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,

Gary

Hi,

I have a five month old Vauxhall which has been absolutely fine so far. However, I noticed yesterday that despite my efforts to keep it clean over the winter, there is some light rust showing on the surface of the brake drums, apparently coming through the black paint.

It's booked in for a warranty check tomorrow, but the man at the dealership seemed to imply that it would probably be considered "normal" and not a warranty job.

I'd appreciate other peoples' opinions on this in case of any dispute tomorrow.

Thanks

Cover the drums up with some of those "dummy" brake discs, they used to come in all sorts of colours. Not seen them around for a couple of years though.

I am trying to install a Back Up Sensor system in my V40. In order for it to work the system must be hooked up to the back up light so when on reverse the system will be activated. I can see that the wires on the back up light are brown but I am unable to find the same wire within the many wires going from the trunk door to the body of the vehicle. Please advise.

Thanks. Yes it is a 2000. I was actually trying to find the wire within the bunch of wires comming out of the trunk door and in to the ceiling of the car. The wire is brown at the back up light but then there is no brown wire anywhere else near there. I might just run a seperate wire trhough the body of the vehicle and connect it directly to the source of the back up light bulb.

I have a 1998 110 Defender Td5. On cold mornings for the few first few minutes i get a horrible grinding noise when the clutch pedal is depressed, both when in and out of gear. The clutch has been replaced recently and has made no difference. Any ideas?? Thanks.

sounds like spigot bush in turning in the flywheel if you ask on here you will get more info www.lro.com/nav?page=lroi.message.list§ion=MES...D
dont know if it does any lasting damage to the flywheel or if it wears the outside of the bush, they would both be fairly hard wearing parts, had a td5 disco do the same thing ,its a known problem

Any owners out there? Looks like these are going for pretty good prices right now, and I was wondering about reliability.
I've read a few reports and it seems to do quite well, my only concern being reliability.
It sounds like the 1.8 has more problems than the 2.5, and the 2.5 doesn't seem to be much of a premium.

Anyway - anyone with direct experience I'd appreciate your advice.
Thanks,

Xpower service centres plus more than a few dealers provide service annd parts back up. Would be worth contacting XPart and asking them for the true parts and service situation. The rumour mill is clearly not a reliable source!

Judge the car as you see it and as it is equipped. There are still just a few axes around being ground ;)

Is there anyone out there who knows what numbers Halfords use to cross reference there own brands of brake wheel cylinders and timing belts? I have just bought some old stock and can't cross ref. them. I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.
cheers

Yes, try googling for the part numbers, or post them on here.
Their bulbs use lucas numbers so maybe their other part numbers are borrowed. You could also try the Contitech and Gates belts websites to see if their part numbers look familiar.

Question stalling focus
walton1

I've a 2000 Focus, 1.8 Zetec, which has suddenley started stalling. It appears to happen when the car is begining to warm up (about the time that in an older car you would be putting the choke in) and if I take my foot off the accelerator around this time eg coming to a junction before I actually stop the car suddenly stalls. No warning lights come on prior to this but occasionally just before it happens the speedo drops to zero although I can be accelerating at that point and then if I take my foot off the accelerator it stalls. It only happens once per journey from cold.
Someone suggested a faultly crankcase sensor, anyone got any ideas please? Read more

Might be worth giving it an Italian Tune. A good belt up the motorway / dual carriageway for 5-10 miles and see if that clears it. Solved a similar problem with my Mk3 Mondeo 2.0 - actually originally suggested by you Adam!
