MG ZT 2.5 - matt-e-pie
Any owners out there? Looks like these are going for pretty good prices right now, and I was wondering about reliability.
I've read a few reports and it seems to do quite well, my only concern being reliability.
It sounds like the 1.8 has more problems than the 2.5, and the 2.5 doesn't seem to be much of a premium.

Anyway - anyone with direct experience I'd appreciate your advice.
Thanks,
Matt

Two years of ownership with a ZT160 2.5. Fantastic car, no problems, extremely well built and got around 28mpg.
Don't be put off by those who have never driven one. I only sold mine because of a growing family and still miss it.
You won't find a better value car at the moment.
I wouldn't have a 1.8T. For a little extra, you get that lovely V6 Growl.

Forget the 1.8, the 2.5 is the one to have.
2.5 KV6 is a tough engine, not to be confused with the troublesome KV6 fitted to the 800. It was substantially reworked for the 75/ZT.

A cracking car.

I have driven several MG-ZTT 2.5 190s and enjoyed them greatly. Nice and tactile to control and with that peach of a V6 singing away up front.

Several colleagues ran/run 75s and MGs with 1.8, 1.8 turbo, and 2.5 engines and the latter were all (and remain so today) trouble free. It was indeed the 1.8 units that had the problems. The only 2.5 problem I know of was from a customer who ran one of the early MG ZT 2.5s fitted with chocolate camshafts that would wear their lobes out within 10k miles. Once this problem was addressed - I recall it was only early ZTs with the 190bhp engine that were affected - the car went on to perform without problem.

My colleague who runs a MG-ZTT 190 today switched from a 320D and doesn't regret it a jot.

Very positive views on the www.carsurvey.org site.
Out of 27 reviews, 23 happy owners, 2 average and only 2 unhappy.

Actually they don't drink petrol (unless as with all cars you drive them that way) and the KV6 has no hgf issue.

Apart from these two points you were spot on lol

I own as previously mentioned a 75 Diesel. When they 1st came out Car Magazine had a V6 on long term test. At less than 10k miles the engine went out to lunch with HGF & their other big complaint was fuel consumption

OK 7 years ago one engine let go. It happens and has happened to all types of cars. imo that doesn't though stand up as a generalisation about the KV6. In the 75/ZT has proved itself in the 7 years since to be an excellent engine with no more hg issues than Ford/Honda/Vauxhall etc. etc.

Car Magazine did complain about the fuel consumption. It isn't the best (tho' not worst) but tbh my response on that was driven more by your first statement than anything else;) I must be overprotective lol

It's a high performing and generally reliable engine in 2.5 form (the 2.0 wasn't too exciting at all). Only thing to get checked is the variable intake valves and motors on the inlet manifold (there are two)as they can go. New motors are around £100 fitted.

Very timely... some months ago I mentioned a dealer with a lovely 2002 MG ZT 160 with 37,000 miles. Its still there and I'd like your opinion on a best price. Its silver, new pirelli p0s on the rear and not a mark. Long tax and MOT too. How much do I bid? Thanks as always!

You really need to think what you are buying ,people are buying Rover products for some sort of nostalga I think or because they are cheap. Its correct to say there a lot of spares available but it is also correct to say a lot are not.The spares that are available are not localised so if you are in the north the part may be in the south and the AA or RAC man has no chance, there is no service backup and be careful if you take one abroad Germany for eg has an ever increasing amount of 75's off the road due to no available parts Autoland in Dresden are dismantling new cars to keep the ones they have recently sold running. So weigh up the pros and cons and make a decision made on sound facts having said all that good motoring if you do decide to buy.

From the excellent austin-rover website, regarding the 75 post 2003:

Sadly in the background, Longbridge production engineers were doing all they could to de-content the 75 range. This was little more than a cost-cutting measure, which ran under the name, 'Project Drive'. Although much of the cheapening of the 75 was not so evident to owners, the tell tale signs were there if you looked hard enough. The lavish wood dashboards of the early cars were replaced by plastic imitations, the door mirrors were replaced by those used in the 25 and 45 ranges, but most shocking of all was the deletion of the rear anti-roll bars from 1.8-litre and CDT versions to the detriment of the car's handling. Evidence of penny pinching could be found in every wheel arch and under every carpet...

Bargepole, touch etc etc. Think head might have to rule heart on the 75, alas.

Xpower service centres plus more than a few dealers provide service annd parts back up. Would be worth contacting XPart and asking them for the true parts and service situation. The rumour mill is clearly not a reliable source!

Judge the car as you see it and as it is equipped. There are still just a few axes around being ground ;)
