I have a 1997 2.0 vectra, the problem is that if sat ticking over at say traffic lights with foot on brake the engine will just cut out after about 30 seconds, will restart immediately, if left ticking over by itself will idle with no problems, as it did for it's mot last week for best part of an hour. All,
Recently, there's a dark drip mark on my tarmac drive, around the perimeter of the car. It appeared when I parked it on a different part. Looks like oil drip, but no irridescence when watered and no damage to tarmac. The marks persist in dry cold weather and reappear after rain. Never noticed it before this winter.
Under the car's wheel arches and on the tyres, there is a slimy coating. AFAIK, I've not driven through a diesel spill, and the effect has persisted for days. All I can think of is the the council was using something other than road salt while it was freezing - something like glycol.
Anyone else had this? What could it be?

My main memory of the 6 months i spent working on a farm after I left school is clouded by geting coverd by projectile in cow diarea whilst doing the morning milking.
It was so bad i dunked my head in a rather green water trough in order to try and wash the muck out my mouth and eyes!
I have a 1996 (P) mark 4 Fiesta, 1.8 diesel which has done 50,000 miles (supposedly genuine?!) The blower and demister motor works in that it is blowing, but only cold air. Every now and then you get a blast of luke warm air but most of the time they are just cold. I have just renewed the anti-freeze and the coolant level is fine but it was doing this before I changed the coolant anyway. The engine temperature always runs somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 of the way up the guage so I am assuming this is OK. Does anyone have any ideas? I have got a Haynes manual if I need to change any parts - if so which ones and where do I get them from? Many thanks! Mark. Read more
Hi guys - just fitted the valve and the heating works fine now. Thanks everyone for your help. A 15 minute job and a £27 part so not bad. Cheers all.
On a 'N'95 plate. Does not like cold days and will not start without alot of cranking. In warm weather, or when engine is hot it will start fine. Battery is good and new glow plugs made no difference whatsoever. Once it has started it runs well after a puff of smoke has cleared. Any ideas chaps?

The Rover 400 was almost identical to the Honda Civic from the outside - does anybody know if they both used K-series engines?
If they did then was the Honda one prone to HGF as well?
If not then what did Honda do right or Rover do wrong? Read more

I have £2250 to spend on a car. The car must be in a low insurance group, petrol, between a 1.1 and 1.4, good economy. In general a cheap run car. Image or performance is not really an issue preferably a small or small/mid sized car - anything from a pug 106 to a skoda fabia, to a fiesta, rover or even hyundai!! im open to suggestions. I travel approximately 45-50 miles a day on A-roads. Any ideas guys? Read more
Re felicia - go for the 1.6 or the 1.9D, as
they are both VW units.
The 1.3 is a cracking little Skoda engine, but does have
some head gasket issues IIRC. Mine did!
The 1.3 Felicia engine is of course an improved Estelle unit, with a prettier cambox and the distributor at the other end (this last making transplant into an Estelle difficult). I say 'improved' because a Skoda man I knew in Sussex said the Felicia unit put out 'a surprising amount of poke', and assume he knew what he was talking about. But 1.3 Felicia has non-assisted, therefore heavy, steering making it unsuitable for ladies or wimps. I always found Estelle steering excellent, and of course it is light unless very heavy luggage is being carried.

A friend at work has an Escort 1.8 Si P reg.
he has been told he has a problem with the Idle Control Valve but, can't actually locate it on the vehicle.
Can any one provide a clue where to look?

Try BBA reman for a new valve (type in BBA reman on Google), they are a bit cheaper than Ford.
My good friend's wife had a fairly bad accident on sunday night. Her car was written off and she was sent to hospital (released that evening). Thankfully no-one else was involved.
She is a diabetic. I understand that she had a low sugar episode (not sure of the precise technical term) and pretty much blacked out at the wheel.
The police attended, and said that they had no option but to report the matter to DVLA, with a recommendation that her licence is withdrawn on medical grounds.
I understand that her insulin prescription was recently changed, and that while she had no problems with the old insulin, the new one doesn't work so well for her. Obviously she is now discussing the matter with her GP, and I suspect that her prescription will be reviewed.
My friend works overseas much of the time and his wife needs to drive to get to work. Having her licence withdrawn would be a nightmare.
I am hoping that her GP would be prepared to give her some kind of "all clear" with the right medication.
Does anyone have any experience of this sort of situation and in particular does anyone have any knowledge of any kind of appeals process in the event that a licence is withdrawn on medical grounds? Read more
The lady is lucky not to have been prosecuted for driving under the influence of drugs. When my husband was diagnosed with type 1, the diabetes nurse warned that this has happened on several occasions. If someone with diabetes thinks they have low blood sugar, they should pull over, switch off and take the key out of the ignition and climb into a passenger seat... As if!!!
The only safe way to drive is to do a blood test before each journey. But who wants to do that many tests? All diabetics should do a rolling cycle of blood tests so that they have an idea what their blood sugars are likely to be on a normal day following their normal regime. If they are planning to do something different, then extra testing is the only safe way.
My husband had a hypo last year only 5 minutes after he been driving with our three children. Don't take chances, you could kill the people you love best.

I submit that a 'top business brain' is one that can work out that 2+2=4, with all that that implies.
The extravagant rewards given to a minuscule percentage of these geniuses are indeed a cause of envy. Envy is a not-very-attractive emotion, not a 'politics'.
Not all capitalists are especially 'unethical', but they are all profiteering. People with money who don't invest it to make profit are not capitalists, they are just people with money.
Contradictory views and feelings are part of the human condition. They are particularly apparent in addicts (e.g. smokers and drinkers) and, for example, devotees of that unnatural device the automobile, but really are universal. Only very young children don't understand this.
