Hi,

I have a 03 corsa 1.4SRi and had a knocking noise intially from the suspension (drivers side) from about 5000 miles, vauxhall said it was me, nothing wrong, at 9000 miles unbearable noise, "oh u need a new steering rack sir", had that done (along with broken engine mount!?) then I had it serviced last week, at 34000 mentioned a slight noise from susp, and guess what! "oh u need a new steering rack sir", now luckily these are both under warranty, but at 34K, 2 racks knackered, doesnt say much for the parts or is there an underlying problem?

I have also had the broken gear selector problem, feels like ur stirring a massive pot!

I think I have to change cam belt at 40000, do you suggest water pump at same time?

Has anyone else had these problems? What else should I expect from my corsa (out of warranty!?) Read more

we had a corsa with the same problem as yours.same year and similar milage.a replacement rack was fitted under warranty.i.e.within 3 years but not a good recommendation for vaxhall.also when selecting 2nd gear it was very difficult.you really had to put extream force on the gearstick to engage the gear a gear.it needed a new selector shaft which is located between gear stick and gearbox.(external).this solved the problem.regards Terry.s

I have a Ford Probe 24v and the 'SRS' light has started to flash which is code 51.

Anybody know the location of the 'SRS Monitor' is ??? Read more

Big Gaz

If it helps, I've got code 51 as "Thermal fuse blown - intermittant short to earth."

No mention of any "SRS Monitor;" but there's an "Airbag Saving Sensor[?]" shown somewhere in the upper part of the centre console near the driver's airvent.

Astra Man

The fuel pump has just gone on my Vx Astra 2.0 DTI (Y20DTH) - 2001.

Cost of replacement is £1300 for a reconditioned unit, the main dealer price
for a brand new unit was twice this !

On speaking to a local injection specialist they tell me they see TEN of
these a week and at any time keep TWENTY of these pumps in stock
!!!!!

Car had done 40,000 miles.

Don't tell you these things when you buy em do they !

So that's another thing to add to my list of reasons for not buying a diesel.

Having had many diesel tractors and combines, 3 diesel cars and 2 diesel Landrovers, I have never had to replace a fuel pump.

I insist that diesels are more reliable than petrols, and with modern diesels they also go plenty fast enough.

If it was my Astra I would get some more quotes, or get it repaired at a specialist diesel place.

Hi. Can anyone help. Would this starter motor fit my 1997 Mondeo 1.8 TD (facelift), or would I need a different one for a diesel?

Chas{P}

No.
The starter motor you need is for the 1.8 Turbo Diesel. The 52 plate Mondeo will have the 2.0 TDCi which is a completely different engine.

Just seen on the news (BBC Scotland) that from March 22nd the Scottish Executive have said that smoking in lorry cabs will be banned in Scotland as a lorry cab has been deemed to be a public place. Now being in the unfortunate position of being both, this has got me a little bit steamy behind the ears. Since when was a lorry cab a public place, 99% of truckers aint allowed passengers for insurance purposes, for most truckers it's their home 5/6 days a week & you don't let Joe Bloggs just walk through your house do you. I have never heard of such nonsense in all my life & irrespective if you are or against smoking don't you think that this is a ban too far. Just think if you are a smoker, that this ban could very well be coming to include cars in the not too distant future. Read more

"a desire to stop us from being unhealthy"
And if they had the courage of their convictions they could make the sale of tobacco products illegal and bung the "tax loss" onto petrol. Now, that would be a popular choice wouldn't it? - and ensure re-election?

Is there a simple test (not tasting!) to see if water has antifreeze in it?. My engine undertray sometimes has a little puddle of water in it and I'm trying to find out if it is a leak or thrown up off the road.

Cheers Read more

martint123

Thats the problem - not enough to sample (with a gadget).
Anyways - It's water thrown up from the O/S front tyre, getting through a small hole where a screw that should hold part of the undertray is missing.

Car temp off road today, I'm another victim of the road humps with a broken rear spring.

I have noticed that the speedo reads about 3miles per hour less than the speed shown on the satnav. Is the satnav more acurate ? Read more

Ruperts Trooper

A 1:10 hill will only alter sat-nav calculation of speed by 0.5% so a 1 mph difference at 200 mph might occur for short periods!

Wife's car today failed MOT test on lambda sensor and catalytic convertor. It's a W reg Kia Pride with 38k miles. When we bought the car it was just 3 years old and had already had a new lambda sensor fitted to pass its first MOT (2003). In 2004 something had to be adjusted to get the emmissions down to pass that MOT and last year another new lambda sensor was fitted.

Today the car has failed again - we're told we need a new cat & another sensor.

Whats happening or are we just unlucky. Why does the lamda keep failing? and do we have to have a new sensor when a new cat is fitted?? Read more

bell boy

these cars were never really designed for an injection system with cat therefore that is why it fails every year.I suspect it only does short journeys?if you want my advise then i would recommend a complete engine service and then a good 40 mile drive take back to mot station and ask him if he will then do you a free emmissions test and see what comes out, post back if it fails and we can advise further.
