Someone near where I live has a car which (literally) has an exhaust so loud (obviously broken), that it wakes us all up at 5am in the morning when the owner goes off to work. I've heard quieter vintage aircraft ...

Is there anything that I can do about this - I cannot imagine (unless they changed it recently) that the car could possibly get through an MOT .... Read more

And here's me getting worked up about the tiniest hint of fanbelt squeak on my car this evening...

Further to my post above, DVD (who has much experience with the law, on the *right* side of it!) has mailed me the following. It confirms what geebee45 said above with some additional info.

The last paragraph is the one you should read hardest:

"No Insurance. Max fine that could be imposed butd very seldom done so : 5,000 pounds. Discretionary Disqualification and between 6 and 8 points. Reports of similar offences in Local Papers will give a guide what Mags are doing.

No MOT: Max fine 1,000 pounds. No disq no points.

Fail to supply breath test. Max 1,000 pounds. Discretionary disqualification but has been known for Courts to give the same, i.e. disqualification, as they would for over the limit. 4 penalty points.

Because of the requirements placed on the police in relation to the request for a sample of breath and also the fact that it a disqualification may well be considered then there are grounds called 'Special Reasons' i.e. mitigating or extenuating circumstances, not amounting to a defence and in relation to the commission of the offence, which could result in no disqualification being imposed.

It is therefore, because of the seriousness of the offences, that legal advice be sought. C.A.B. run a free session with a Solicitor."

Hello All,

Following on from an ealier thread about Panda versus Rio, I have now driven the Panda diesel. Really liked it.

I have agreed the following deal and would be interested to know what everyone thinks.

- Fiat Panda 1.3D Multijet. Mamba Yellow with blue interior. Brand new.
- 30%down 0% interest over 3 or 4 yrs (don't particularly car) This is Fiats current special offer
- AirCon pack (manual aircon, roof bars etc..)
- split fold/slidy rear seat
- Mats
- Tank of diesel

£8k exactly. (List price is £7895)

Personally I think its quite good given I've got the options I wanted and can pay over 4yrs interest free for pretty much list price.

What do people think? Reasonable? or rubbish.

BTW - for those interested the split fold rear seat option is shown here, courtesy of a kind chap from www.fiatforums.com

Just to let you know I've ordered it. £7350 OTR with the options listed above (actually beats the best internet quote allowing for delivery cost and only 6mths tax).

Happy with that price for the car with the extra's and hopefully some dealer goodwill having not bought it off the broker.

Thanks to those of you who helped me stick at it and get a good deal (IMHO)

Many weeks wait now begins :(

As I read more and more reports and tests of the new Civic it is becoming quite clear that Honda have made a complete mess of their best seller.

Quite simply they are allienating their traditional mature buyers with a ludicrously complicated, bi-focal, two tier dash and a ride so harsh as to rattle the false teeth and jar the dodgy back.

It would seem intentional as their aim is to rebrand as a young persons car. Well that won't work because (a) the larger engines send insurance too high (b) it's a Honda (b) it tries so hard to be 'cool' that it is the complete opposite and (d) Ford, VW, Seat and Vauxhall all make better cars in this segment.

They'll be falling on their swords by June. Read more

Ride most likely poor due to 45 section 225 tyres on 17" rims, with stiff springs giving plenty of grip, but at a price. EX version sounds one to avoid!

Question Honda Jazz
sjh

My wifes Jazz does not feel quite as smooth as it once was. At first I thought it was my driving 'style' but now my daughter has noticed the same small 'interuption' in the running.
It can happen in any gear and seems to be a small hicup / miss / slip similar to that noticed when you put on the A/C.
Any ideas ?

Forum Tipping
smokie

Last night I had cause to call out the RAC man to recover a car (the new Fiesta seems to have burnt it's clutch out...)

He turned up reasonably promptly (40 mins), was helpful, towed the car about 2.5 miles and is getting good feedback on the custoner care card he gave us.

Should I have tipped him? If so, how much?

Who else might you tip, in a motoring context?

I do a fair mileage, and have consequently picked up a number of bullet holes in the windscreen: Seems that it is a standard line in patter after the guy has fixed the chip, that he has saved you a fifty quid insurance excess payment, which you would have had to have paid, if you had needed a new screen.
The illusion is further enhanced by his sucking of air throughout the operation, explaining that it's touch and go whether the screen cracks or not as he pumps in the resin.
Does anyone ever tip these guys, and do the screens ever crack?

Hi. Just got a V reg Passat 1.9 TDI and the heating system is poor in that, if you push the temp beyond the the 22 deg auto setting it gets warmer but not hot even on the max setting. The engine is up to temp (90 deg) the heater feed is hot and the return is slightly cooler. A pal bought one at the same time and as with my Audi 80 you could roast beef in the cab when on the hot setting. Any thoughts please before I make a start. Many thanks. Read more

Hi Fellas. Further to my problem with the heater not getting upto temp and trying all the usaul things including a diagnostics check which showed nothing. I have discovered that by opening the face vent control and the vents I can get another 7 deg rise in temp at the footwell outlet. Open the screen vent and yet another 7 or so deg increase so all three are where they should be. Close the footwell and there is no change to the others. Open the footwell and close the others and temp drops again. Changing the fan speed make no differance. Any ideas please?

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows much about the speedometer on a vectra b?
I have a Y reg and its done 158000 miles, just recently some of the pixels on the tripometer have stopped working. Thought about looking on ebay for a replacement but would this mean changing the whole unit? If so, how would this affect the mileage reading?

thanks for any adivce, its driving me nuts.

the gauges on these are an all in one unit .It is possible to seperate the front instrument needle assy from the circuit board but this does not help if the display is faulty.I guess it is possible to swap the digital display units but would require some tricky soldering.
