Can anyone confirm if the operation of a hatchback's rear wiper and washer is tested in the MOT please? Read more
Ford Fiesta 1.4 02 reg.
About 5 months ago, with no warning I have had the EAC FAIL warning come up on the dash (where the fuel & mileage panels flash), power to accleration reduces. I pulled over and switched the engine off for about a minute, restarted and was able to carry on my way. I took it to the Ford Dealer and they reprogrammed the unit which cost about £80.
The fail came up again last night shortly before I got home, again I was able to pull over, let it rest for about a minute and everything is fine again. I'm hesitant to take it back to the garage for them to charge me again, and perhaps have the fail come up again in the future.
Is it ok to drive, and hope that it doesnt come up again?
or how much would it cost to have it replaced rather than re-programmed ? Read more

This is pretty common; it's usually just the accelerator pedal/position sensors assembly going down. Might be worth cleaning the plug's contacts; but as the whole thing comes as a lump and takes around five minutes to fit [for very little money]it might be best to just pop a new one in.
Never posted in here before so excuse me if I'm barging in or anything, but...
I work in Guildford and live near Chertsey, so it's the usual trek through Byfleet to the A3 every morning.
I wouldn't mind cycling it, but going via road is about 15 miles - that would take a good hour and a half! Does any one know if there are any more direct routes?
A friend and I cycled 23 miles at the weekend - into Staines past Thorpe Park, back down the river into Chertsey, into Shepperton, then Sunbury, then Walton, Weybridge, and home. It's amazing where these little routes/shortcuts are if you can find them.
Does anyone know of any, or am I asking the impossible? Read more
I'm still liking the flame thrower idea. All these ideas for killing them leaves me with a drive full of dead things which, when pulled up, may damage the drive. Incinerating them seeems much more satisfactory, and sweeping some ashes up shouldn't cause any damage.
I have to admit, SWMBO keeps looking alarmed at the grin on my face when I mention this flame-thrower idea.
I had the unfortunate experience of arriving at a traffic accident yesterday which had happened a few minutes before - I followed the ambulance to the scene. It appeared someone had been run over by a taxi. No other vehicles appeared to be involved. I passed the incident and went about my business. After 15 minutes I returned down the same stretch of road, which had been closed off so a quick detour through the estate was required. What surprised me was that at this one incident there were 8 (yes eight) patrol cars, two police vans, one traffic car, an 'incident' car and the ambulance. As I went home another 2 traffic cars were just arriving - just needed the force helicopter and a dog van for a full set!

Possible fatal accident?
Just had mine re-done after far too long and got some nice tinted driving glasses. I can't believe the improvement in peripheral vision, how I notice things more and of course the longer view is sharper and less fuzzy.
As of last week I am definitely a safer driver! Recommended.

I quote verbatim from a recording of the unappealing You & Yours consumer programme on BBC Radio 4, 19/01/06.
Interviewer: ". . . but what about the argument that these cameras have replaced traffic police and that the cameras are missing some of the worst offenders . . .
Steven Ladyman, "Roads Minister": "Well that's fallacious . . . We have record numbers of police involved in enforcing traffic offences at the moment . . ."
Which planet are these people on?

I've just had contact with the 'police' to report a wagon driver for failing to stop after demolishing a fence around an industrial estate we manage. At first the call centre operative didn't think a crime had been committed. Then an appointment was made to see me when I was out, they didn't call me to see if I was in. They then asked for an alternative time and I said this afternoon or tommorrow afternoon. Receive a call back to say someone would see me at 11am tommorrow! I give up.
Approximately how much should a cambelt change cost on a 1.9 TD? The last time it was done, it was definitely very cheap. The quote I have been given by the same garage is now more than twice as much. I have no idea what a main dealer would charge. Read more
"£115 plus VAT"
Good price - we were quoted £130 when our independent was doing other work on our old Xantia so we got it done at 50k interval rather than the 72k (?) recommended. when you come to sell it, it's a point worth mentioning if you have had it done.

I happened to catch a programme about the construction of the Millau bridge on Ch5. last night. An amazing technical achievement, but the eye-opener was when they wanted to test the load-bearing limits - they had 27 lorries,(900 tons weight)drive on to the centre span to see if it would deform..I wonder what inducement they offered to the drivers?

Do not believe that the bridge will do away with delays. At least in the good old days (7hr tailback at peak periods), you could stop and et a drink or meal in the town.
I believe that last summer the worst delay, stuck on the approach to the peage, reached about 2 hrs! At leat you have a nice view whilst stuck in blazing sun shine, and no shade in prospect.
