Question Problem Golf
noel2538

I have a Golf 1999 V reg Mark4, I had it since March 2005.Starting having problem with idle needle going up and down. Took it to VW put it on their computer and decided it needed a new Throttle Body Housing and Lampa sensor.

Its since been back to the dealer for this problem and its going in again on Saturday 28th Jan. Ive explained to them that when I pull away and want to excelarate, the car hesitate, I then have to dip the clutch to get it to go faster!!

The mechanic at VW said maybe I should drive it harder, but it already using more fuel than I think I should!! Im at a loss and my warranty runs out this March!!

Ive even put Fuel Filter, its done under 70,000 miles. Not due for plug until 80k. Maybe it needs another Throttle Body!!
Any advise welcome.

I did think about changing plugs and HT leads but VW dont think that will make any difference, but it wont hurt to do it.
I can understand driving hard in the short term but the mechanic was suggesting I do that all the time which is not ideal and its make your right leg ache!
Its just had its service but I might get the timing rechecked once Ive done the plugs etc.

Can anyone recommend a Land Rover specialist, preferably somewhere near Battersea, for servicing and repairs? I am asking on behalf of my daughter whose temporary boss wants to service his LR. Not a new model, I am told, so probably a pre-coil-spring Defender. Read more

coldstart

I have a 1994 cavalier 17td. it has been having cold start problems so I checked all the heater plugs were OK but discovered that although the indicator light on the dashboard was coming on for appros 10 secs the plugs themselves were staying on for a couple of minutes after the engine had started. (This was established by wiring a light up direct from the plug feed)which remained lit after the dashboard light had gone out.

What actually controls the time that plugs stay on ? it appears at the moment to be the engine heating up. Read more

It's definitely valve clearances. If you have access to a surface grinding machine, it's a fairly straightforward d.i.y job. Take off the cam cover. You won't require a new gasket as there is a fitted neoprene seal. Turn the engine over by hand (unscrewing the glow plugs will help) and check clearances as per manual. They will probably all be less than specified. You can make a tool to lever down the cam buckets and remove the shim from it's recess. If available, grind off the amount required to make the correct gap. If grinding facility unavailable, you can buy new shims to suit from you friendly Vaux dealer. You should be able to 'mix & match' some of the shims.

n.b A surface grinder is a precision engineering machine and every engineer's workshop in the world will have one.

A colleague picked up a brand new S class Jag a couple of months ago. It's one of the fully loaded end of line 2.5 versions (the 2.5 petrol engine has since been dropped from the range).

Part of the package was full bluetooth kit working in conjunction with sat nav display screen. He was given details of compatible phones when he bought the car.

Upgraded his phone, but bluetooth only worked for some functions.

After much toing and froing between Jaguar dealer and phone supplier it has become apparent the bluetooth chassis installed in the Jag is already two generations obsolete! When he asked for a list of phones compatible with his chassis every one is an old model and no longer available.

Jaguar are to install the latest bluetooth chassis FOC, but beware that if you are considering bluetooth as part of a new car it may only be useful for the life of your current phone. Read more

Mercedes have had some bluetooth capability in their cars for years - but it dosn't do anything. They're just about to bring out blue-tooth phone kits.

MB's phone cradles have only just been updated - until very recently Nokia 6310i was about the most modern phone you could have. Kits more than a couple of years old are not upgradeable.

Friend of mine has a brand-new A4 and the integrated blue-tooth kit is rubbish. No one can hear him talk. Dealers (tried 2) are useless - just shrug their shoudlers.

Does anyone know a source where these can be bought for reasonable cost, maybe second hand?

Maybe thinking of optical ones, I've heard Dunlop ones mentioned on the forum before.

obviously the most rudimentary tracking guages you can make are out of a piece of string (ideal in the desert)use them as i described earlier go for a parallel setting i suggest if 4 wheel drive so vehicle doesnt get stuck in sand.

I am intending to buy a car which is currently on a private plate. Getting the original plate back is no problem but how does this work when the car will be taxed and insured & MOT'd on the private number when the old one is reissued? I assume I'll have to go to Post Office to change the tax disk from the old reg to the new one for a start.

Anyone know how long it takes to get an original reg returned when changing cars?

Anyone done this sort of thing before?

When we changed the wife's (moved number onto a new car) the DVLA asked for a photocopy of the tax disc to be submitted with the documents, they did not see the original until after we got the new one.

Don't rely on the garage alone, the Audi dealer we used hadn't a clue what to do and it only got sorted when I spoke to the DVLA direct.

Wife was a little disconcerted when the new tax disc and registration document for the old car arrived, she spent a few days driving it with the wrong plates on! APNR would show that tax disc WAS issued for the number on the car since Audi had taxed the new one!

Please Help. Car when hot or cold and with a/c off seem to vibrate and nearly cut out but never does, vibration increases and idle speed drops further when turning with heated screen on, with a/c on vibration falls away as idle speed is raised. Is this a problem, should I worry?

I am part exchanging an import. The topic didn't arise in the transaction and I didn't get chance to mention it, do I need to provide this information to the dealer ? Read more

Perturbed

I started the other thread when I p/ex'd my import. The dealer will find out soon enough if he does an HPI on the car. Expect him to come back with a ridiculous change to your "agreed deal" He started by sying he had to reduce the value of my trade in by about £1200 if I remember correctly. Ended at agreeing £150 reduction after I gave him a hard time, which really annoyed me given the car was full UK spec with all certificates. Stick to your guns and don't drop. He certainly won't be making the punter buying yours aware that the car is an import and he'll be asking the going rate for it
