Hi all, I'm scrapping my rover 111i (n reg) and I've been given a metro (casino royale m reg). I was just wandering if any bits will fit from the 111i onto the metro. I'm guessing not, but if anything would fit I would remove it before the car goes to the scrap yard. The 111i had a new middle and back box 8 months ago, and new plugs and leads at the end of November.

Thanks Rich, got the form today to send off the tax disc and it has a box to tick for sorn. I'm not worried how long it sits in the garden for, as I want to get what I can off it. I know what you mean now on the v5c form.
Thanks again

Question 306 td battery
scfc_151

just thinking of getting a battery for my 306 1.9td. it was new last year but ive never been impressed. at the minute its a 570 amp. my brother had a bosch silver 650 amp on his polo 1.9d and his is superb. just wondered if putting a bigger battery on (battery pan size permitting) would do it any harm?

the battery has been 'slow' charged quite a few times, all water levels are fine but it still starts rough and slow. any opinions? Read more

if a larger battery ie. 650 amp would fit in the car would this be ok? i think the price of the bosch battery is reasonable at my local auto shop so better too much power than too little?

Help! I know nothing about cars, and mine has just started to play up. Drove 15miles home, and its started to stall at junctions and traffic lights etc - the revs just drop away. If I turn it off and leave it for a bit the problem goes away, then comes back after a few miles.

Any ideas? I'm hoping as it's intermittent it's not going to be too expensive/serious to fix... Read more

Wish I'd known about Tetraboost. Apart from the fact that my Skodas liked it, one advantage of proper leaded was that it provided a visual check on the car's state of tune, by looking at the colour inside the exaust pipe after an out-of-town run. I used unleaded ordinaire with Castrol Valvemaster Plus, as recommended by HJ. Trouble was Mme Lud had difficulty adding the right amount, so it often got missed. And the German motorways with their compulsory 200 miles of pedal-to-the-metal did produce quite marked exhaust valve seat recession.

Just heard that that the Fiat dealership I have my new Panda diesel on order with has gone into receivership. So I'll try and get my deposit back via the credit card company and consider what to get instead. And quite quickly ideally. The Panda was ordered with options so I can't source an equivalent without starting the process again. So I'm considering alternatives.

The car is going to be a commuter hack (mainly motorway) and should be big enough to seat three adults (its a car share and the other two are paying me!). The main criteria are comfort, reliability, cheap to insure, service and must be economical. I don't care about the badge or the glamour and I intend to keep the car for many years. I would prefer a diesel and am happy to spend up to £6K (maybe a bit more). I would prefer to buy from a main dealer if poss.

My initial thoughts were something like a last of the line Xsara 110BHP 2.0HDi (maybe estate), a Focus TDCi or maybe another Seat like an Ibiza?

If anyone has any experience with any of the above or can suggest alternatives I should consider then great. Thanks

Thank you Derekr. Most helpful Xsara post. Will investigate

Against all odds I have I have found a Yaris D4D at the local Toyota main dealership that is in my price range. These things seem to be very rare.

Car in question is this one:

dealers.toyota.co.uk/bluesky/jsp/public/used_cars/...1

After having engaged the dealer, he has reserved the car for me until the weekend (returnable deposit) and has indicated he's not going lower than this deal

Toyota Yaris D4D 5dr in Caribean blue(??)
'03 plate 27k miles one owner (confirmed by RAC vehicle check)

£6495 OTR

includes:
1yr Toyota approved car warranty (inclues RAC membership)
1yrs road tax
Full service and yrs MOT
tank of diesel and new set of mats

Obviously not a cheap car - these beasties are pricy (and rare)! Parkers indicates main dealer price of £6300 for 20k example from franchised dealer so not a million miles away from that with the tax, fuel and mats.

Ready to receive cutting comments chaps...

£12,000 for a new Legacy 2.0 RE @ Motorpoint seems a good buy.

However these are imported via Malta/Cyprus

Are any BR aware of differences in spec etc that takes the edge off a £4,000 saving?

I was told that you have to have the car serviced more often and that the cars are not undersealed (no snow & ice in Malta!) Read more

This a good price in the UK for a good car but just serves to highlight how much Subaru UK feels the UK market can bear. Before Christmas I was being offered fob Yokahama a Euro III spec 2.0i Legacy Estate for £8730, £7666 for a 2.0 Impreza and £10,632 for a 2.5 Outback. The agent is obviously taking a margin but even factoring in shipping costs and VAT/duty, there is still something to be gained well below UK list prices. Of course, Subaru in the UK/Europe will not want to know you in terms of warranty but these cars were being offered through dealers with 3 year warranties so they must have good reliability.

If you've back-flushed the heater and bled all the air out; then it will probably be the matrix blocked.

Very common on these after cooling system disturbance; you'll be amazed by the difference in weight of the old and new matrixes [matrices?] due to the amount of accumulated crud.

The Parking Adjudicators have just published their Annual Report. Quite a lot of intersting commentary, particularly on towaways and match day restrictions round major stadia.

Cruise on down to www.parking-appeals.gov.uk/about/AnReport.asp .

Max stay 1hr, no returns within two hours!!!!.

Was going to post this on the Traffic Warden thread, but on reflection it deserves a space of it's own. Read more

Well done Bromptonaut, a very interesting site.

I found this page especially interesting

Did you know there are Penalty Charge Notices, Fixed Penalty Notices and Excess Charge Notices. Do you know the difference?

I recently tried to 'turn up' my 1998 306 Td by messing with the maximum fuel settings and boost settings. There is a black grommit on the lucas fuel pump that has to be removed so to 'turn it up'. But i broke the grommit, and had to buy a second hand pump, as grommits can not be bought for love nor money and trying to fit one was no good either. (I must have nackered the thread)

The new pump was fitted by a a mechanic friend, new timing belt the works, but the car will not start first time in the morning.
New glow plugs have been fitted as well.
It takes so long to start up that the battery is begining to go flat.

The pump is slightly different to one that came out, may have been from an older model and the grommit looks to have been removed and put back in succesfully and so may have been 'turned up'.

Is there anyway i can get my car back to the way it used to be before i played with it?

Please please help

Cheers

Could try advancing injection timing slightly by rotating injection pump slightly but mark it's position in relation to the block first as a reference. Bolt under the pump is hard to undo without right spanner.
Check there are no air leaks and the wire to the cold start lever is taut when engine cold before you go further.

Service has flagged up that coolant in my 2002 model PD Passat has deteriorated. -15°C protection rather than -25°C from new.
Is a coolant change easy? I'm going to find a Haynes manual.
Last time I did this, Renault 18, bleeding the air out was tedious.

Bottom radiator hose clip is in a very confined space. No confidence I could get to it OK. Emptied header tank by undoing spring clip with a pair of Mole grips.
Topped up with 2 litres of fresh 'G12 plus' coolant at the maximum recommended concentration.~60/40.
