Xantia cambelt change - machika
Approximately how much should a cambelt change cost on a 1.9 TD? The last time it was done, it was definitely very cheap. The quote I have been given by the same garage is now more than twice as much. I have no idea what a main dealer would charge.

Same engine on my Xsara, was quoted 200 quid at my local independent including belt, tensioner, water pump and labour. Dunno if it included VAT though, suspect not.

I spoke to the chap who owns the garage I use and he said he has never seen a case of a failed tensioner on an XUD engine, so he doesn't normally see the need to replace them. He didn't say anything about the pulley either.

The local main dealer has quoted over £300 for the job, with tensioner replaced too, again, no mention of the pulley.

I have to bear in mind that the car is almost twelve years old and worth very little. It will also be replaced at the end of the year, so it doesn't make sense to spend a lot of money on it.

Depending on the age of the car, and whether it's got aircon affects the book time. Probably about 3 hours for the easiest ones (No A/C, early clip on covers) to 4 hous for the hardest ones (A/C, later bolt on covers) - personally 4 hours is good going. It took me 5 to change the belt on my 95 car with bolt on covers, but no A/C - I gave up on my 97 car after it took nearly an hour just to get the aux belt off, and then started raining! The tensioner on these engines is very good, people often change them at 150k (the second belt change) because they feel they ouught to, but I've not heard of anybody actually finding anything wrong with one! Certainly the one on my BX was fine (no play, no sign of roughness) at 136k when I changed the head gasket. Never heard of any problems with the cam sprocket - and I've had extensive contact with Cit forums for about 4 years. £300 sounds quite reasonable from a MD, including the tensioner supply and fitting - however, this will be more than a 12 year old Xantia is worth! Unless you're going to put mega miles on it this year, or it's a long time / lots of miles since it was last done, I'd just keep driving it - ebay it at the end of the year if it survives, scrap it and buy another one off e-bay if it doesn't!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

I'd definately agree with Richard W here. I don't see the point in changing the cambelt if you are going to sell the car on at the end of the year.

The cambelt set up on these engines is one of the best around, failures are rare.

The chap that services the car has quoted £115 plus VAT, which I thought was worth doing, in order to keep the car going at least until the end of the year. Whilst the car hasn't done a lot of miles in the last 3 years (since we had the C5), it is about seven years since the first cambelt change. I don't want to risk the belt failing and then have to be forced to buy a car ahead of time.

Then for that price i would agree it is worth doing. If the belt is 7 years old probably better off changing it.

"£115 plus VAT"
Good price - we were quoted £130 when our independent was doing other work on our old Xantia so we got it done at 50k interval rather than the 72k (?) recommended. when you come to sell it, it's a point worth mentioning if you have had it done.
