Hi there, A family friend has a 2005 reg' 1.2 8v Fiat punto. After being in it today, i noticed the idling was very erratic. The engine speed drops from 800 rpm to 500rpm and then returns to 200 again, this cycle happens every second or so, i suspect a problem with the Idle control system, am i correct in thinking this?? has anybody else got any othe suggestions? Thanks,

I was on my way to work this morning, whe i noticed the road was icy. It threw me into the kerb, and my front wheel is buckled as a result.

I know places like Kwik-Fit sell tyres, but where can I buy a wheel, and how much should i expect to pay roughly for one for a Pug 106?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

>is going to fit the spare for £5!
>(I don't have the tools)

Please get yourself a jack and wheel brace/extending socket arm to fit your wheelnuts.

If there ain't one in the car you'll be up the creek if you get a puncture and want to put the spare on. The scrapper will have the standard 106/Saxo issue ones if you don't. He'll want another fiver/tenner, but it is worth it!

Punctures never happen in convenient, well lit locations with friendly helpful people around, so make sure you carry a torch in the car too.

My 1.6 97 Primera hesitates and accelerates poorly around 3500-4000 rpm.
It drives perfectly under this. It has done 110,000 miles.
The problem is more noticeable in 3rd gear and above.
It feels as though it is misfiring slightly and whistles slightly. I had a new exhaust from the cat back fitted 6-9 months ago. I think it was 'misfiring' before this but not whistling. The misfire was improved some time ago by wd-40 in the dizzy cap. I have recently fitted a new cap and rotor bought from Nissan - Had trouble finding a copy.
The hesitation remains. I am living with it at the moment by driving under 3500 rpm.

Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

Aprilia

Spot on Aprilia.
Starts and idles better and accelerates past the 3500 revs smoothly.
Local shop charged me £23 for a set made for the
primera.
Nissan wanted over £50.
Cheers for your help.
Ian

Glad to help. Just bear in mind your £23 set will not last as long as the Nissan ones - doesn't really matter at 110k miles I guess, but on a newer or 'treasured' car it always pays to go OEM on HT leads in my experience. I have had some particularly nasty experiences with 'pattern' Vauxhall leads.

Have them on my car. Very sticky and low road noise, and my Dad also uses them on his. Highly recommend.

May I suggest that you take out a one month free trial with 'Which? On-Line':

trial.which.co.uk/?bbcam=adwds&bbkid=Which&x&which...2

By so doing, you can take a look at their excellent reports on all sorts of things (including tyres) and you may choose to stay with them as I have done...but you don't *have* to.

Not in the UK yet, but I was reading a magazine yesterday which stated cruise control has been banned on motorways in Belgium - how is that enforced? Read more

As I may have pointed out in another thread - I've found cruise control to be nothing more than a Murphy's Law activation switch. I can be driving along quite happily on an empty motorway for miles before I realise that it might be a good idea to switch the cruise control on. The minute I do... wham. The traffic backs up and I stop cruising. It's the motoring equivalent of saying "oh well at least it isn't raining."

My 2001 convertible developed a strange noise that turned out to be a crack in the exhaust manifold. Took it to the dealer and they quoted over 700 quid for the part plus labour as this is the only model that has the cat attached to the manifold.

After talking with another dealer - this was explained as being a "known problem" with all Astras and some other models and something the Vauxhall knows about. Myself, even without this comment, I find it strange that after 40K miles the manifold has a crack in it.

Any comments? Any ideas of what I can do. 700 quid is a lot of money.... Thanks. Read more

Does anyone know how this is done?

I want to convert an estate car from a PLG to LCV for tax purposes. Some manufacturers do this as standard, like Jeep Cherokees, Mitsubishi Shoguns and Citroen Xaras. They remove the rear seats and seat belts, then sell them as vans, which has many tax benefits for businesses.

Is it a simple matter of telling the DVLA, or will they want to inspect the vehicle. Do the changes have to be irreversable or approved in some way? Read more

Dave N

You only pay VAT if you go from a van to a car, assuming someone claimed the VAT in the first place on the van. In theory, when going from car to van you can claim the VAT back.

There's a company that convert the new Discovery to vans, but regards the windows they only heavily tint them. Whereas the factory options from Kia, Jeep and Mitsubishi have replacement windows that you can't see anything through at all, which is a pain at junctions. So I'm thinking if a company can convert and sell as a commercial, why can't I? If so, I can buy whatever suits and do it myself.
