December 2005
Hi,
A few days ago the timimg chain on my 2002 2.2 zafira snapped. I've discovered that this is a fairly common fault and am wondering if anyone else has experienced this?
My car is out of warranty, however I believe that Vauxhall will pay all/part of the costs. They know about the fault but did not do a recall.
If anyone has experienced this problem, been compensated thru Vauxhall or can offer any advice please reply

Is it possible for me to do an oil change myself? Only I hear on some modern German cars there are no oil drain plugs and the oil is removed by using a pump only available at the service centres. Read more
Here are the most popular pela pump oil extractors used by sailors to winterize their boats. They can easily be used for draining the oil out of your car engine also. The suction power is incredible and does not need too much effort.
My secretary's daughter has gotten herself into a bit of a scrape. In June she allowed her then boyfriend (now ex)to use her car to get to work while his car was off the road. He was not named on her policy, but assured her that he was covered to drive her car by virtue of his own policy (presumably the usual clause in fully comp policies allowing one to drive another car belonging to someone else as long as it is insured...)
He got stopped (don't know why) and given a producer. He didn't comply with it. First she knows of it is when the police turn up at her door. If I understand the story right, they told her that as long as he produced the documents to the Mags court pronto, there would be no further action.
He assured her that he had done so. It now seems that he has not, and she is being prosecuted for allowing him to drive the car uninsured and with no MOT. No idea if he is being prosecuted as well.
In the interim (and prior to the split up) she sold the car to him. It had a valid MOT, and he now has the certificate.
I know nothing about Mags procedure, but have advised that she should get a duplicate MOT cert from the garage that issued it. That should knock the MOT part of the claim on the head.
As regards the insurance, I have said that obviously if the ex was insured, that will knock that claim on the head also.
If he is not insured, is it a valid defence for her to argue that she genuinely believed that he was?
Also, If he will not play ball and co-operate (I do not know on what terms the romance ended, but I expect unhappily..)is there any way that we can independantly find out if he was insured?
I know it seems bizarre for a solicitor to be seeking legal advice, but I know nothing about Magistrates procedure or traffic offences, and am sure that someone on here might have a few pearls of wisdom! Read more

I am curently looking at buying a second hand merc sprinter and have found one for 7000 plus vat. considering the mieladge and the condition and extras eg air con elw etc the price seems reasnable but how much do you think I can get away with hagiling off the price.
What sort of mark up would the seller add on for negotiating? Previously, although all my motor purcases have been sound I have always felt that I could bought have got a bit less.

i reckon that the traders got nearer 5@1/2 in that and if he is a van trader i dont reckon you will get much off at all.It sounds a good low mileage specced van,do definately ring the previous owner/s for a mileage check an honest trader will show you the v5 with the names on if hes got it,alternativly ask to see if hes done a mileage check with a hpi report and look at that, these confirmations can take weeks to obtain mind.As said if it does your job speak to the man,but a good warranty can sometimes be better than a dollop of money off if he is a van trader of repute he would rather give a warranty than a cash discount for a trade sale ,i know i would

200kmh? in freezing rain? I have sympathy for any family left behind, but what planet was this driver on?

Tensions seem to be running high in this thread.
Out of respect for the relatives and loved ones that are connected with this accident, I think it's time to lock it before any further speculation and opinions are voiced.
I have removed Adam's initial comments that some people took offence to, but as he has since apologised for them, I will leave his apology in place to clear up any misunderstanding.

Hi all,
I was hoping for some advice on the following possible? issue.
I have taken the cylinder head off a 2001 Rover 25 (K-Series Engine after I carried out a compression test and found widely differing results between all cylinders.
I checked to see if the head was warped using a straight edge and feeler guages, I found no evidence of any warping.
What I did find however were strange circular undercuts running around two-thirds of the circumference of each cylinder combustion chamber.
The undercuts are about 1 mm thick and .0006" deep. My findings are quite hard to explain but if anyone thinks they can help, I can sent a very clear digital photo of the undercuts via e-mail.
There is no undercutting towards the inlet side of the cylinder head.
I have changed many head gaskets and have never seen anything like this.
As I have never changed a K-series head can anyone tell me if this is undercutting is:
1)Supposed to be there
2)Should be skimmed out
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
Stephen

I have a Megane 1.5 DCi 100 sports tourer in dynamique trim level. It is less than 2 years old and 9000 miles. The only problem so far is the drivers seat is already showing signs of the pattern wearing off and the side bolster pile roughing up. I have never had any previous cars suffer from seat wear even after 6 years and 80k miles.
Renault dealers refuse to accept under warranty as considered to be " general wear and tear". One suggested I move the seat back each time to avoid contacting the side bolster when getting in or out!! Honestly, I am the sole driver and only 11 stone, so can not be accused of being on the large size.
Renault UK suggested I hawk it around different dealers until I found one that was prepared to claim under warranty and would not even send out an engineer to inspect it, purely relying on the dealers decision.
Any one else had a similar problem with this trim level?
Apart from never buying a Renault again, can anybody offer advice on how to get Renault to respond?
(other than this, the car is much better than the equivalent Focus estate I had previously)
Thanks, Roy Read more
I have exactly the same car but the hatchback rather than the tourer. My seats in Dynamique trim are absolutely fine, no wear at all. Mine is a '53' 2004 model with 15K on the clock.
I can only assume that you got a bad seat covering since I have not heard of this problem with Renaults and my previous Laguna did 180K and was still looking good.
I agree with your comment about the Focus as well. I find the Megane to be a better all round car with the exception of the steering which was sharper on the Ford.
Hi,
I've just made a mistake.
I've paid a £200 deposit on a car from a non franchised dealer
for a 98/S Vauxhall Corsa Envoy 1.2 3D with 78K on the clock.
The sticker price was £1695, the Parkers guide is under £1200.
Does anybody know if the 14 day cooling off period would allow me to cancel the sale ?

There is only ever a cooling off period when you sign an agreement at your home (basically away from the trader's premises). This is to stop you from being browbeaten into submission by a double glazing salesman, etc., calling at your door and you sign anything just to get him to leave. Basically it allows you to invalidate an apparently good agreement so that there is no evidential burden in cases where the salesman has been oppressive.
There is no cooling off period for any finance agreement (although there may be for warranties) although you do have a right to settle early and only pay a maximum of two months' interest in doing so (plus any interest accrued to that point).
A despoit is just the first payment under the contract. It provides an incentive for the seller to hold the goods and prepare to perform his side of the contract whilst you perform the remaining part of yours, i.e., you pay the balance. You don't need to sign anything - your promise to take the car at that price is sufficient consideration to form your half of the contract.
£1,695 is the right ballpark for a 1.2 Corsa. Of 30-odd 1998 1.2 Corsas with sub 80k miles on the Trader, yours would be in the first 10 in ascending order of price. I'm not saying it's the best car you can get for the money but you've not been ripped off based merely on the price you've agreed to pay.
Taking the family down to Center Parcs Mon to Fri next week.
Route will be

Anyone live near these routes have any knowledge of anything I should be aware of eg. planned or current roadworks etc etc?
Also, could the same people post a note on here Mon am. letting me know what the weather is like in your area? :) Read more
This is so odd. I was actually having fun keeping up with a 400 saloon of all things the other day. It was really quite a refreshing surprise.

Hi, I am suffering from abnormal wear on the rear tyres of my peugeot estate. The present tyres are less than a year old but the inside edge on both is nearly bald. I will get down to the garage to get this investigated , but i wonder if any of you clever chaps could shed some light on the subject. Is there such a thing as the tracking being out on the rear axle.
Many thanks in anticipation of a resonse Read more
Hi thanks for that, I will see my dealer and see if they agree with you, thanks
Hi,
I'd done enough research on the net and as VX 'know' about the fault but had done little or nothing to resolve it. I wrote a strongly worded letter to their MD, followed by a few telephone calls to Luton. I eventually got put through to someone senior enough to make a decision and they agreed to pay all the costs.
