Last night the kids put the rear courtesy lights on in the car and I told them to put them off as it was illegal to drive with them on.

This was what I was always told by my dad for years, is it true or did he just not want me reading in the car at night? Read more

Wasn't sure if this was a question for "discussion" or "technical" but...

what sort of effect will having two different tyres on the rear left and rear right have. Obviously this would not be recommended, but I have this situation on my VW Passat, and my handling feels a bit strange and wondered if this was likely to be the cause? I'm told one is a sportier tyre and one is standard (although they're the same manufacturer)

I'd a 1974 Mini with two different brands of tyre on the rear .
Nominally the same size. After I 'lost' the rear end I compared the tyres - the tread width and overall diameter were considerably different.Think the dodgy one was an India brand IIRC.
Fitted a new tyre to match the Michelin and problem solved.
I have never had noticeable adhesion/handling problems with different brands front/rear though.

My 2002 Passat diesel after about 30 secs after switching on ignition ( engine running or not) flashes the "glow plug " warning light and the message "engine workshop" appears , the glow plug light keeps flashing , the car starts and seems to run as normal except for the flashing light ?? Any ideas? Read more

If it is the brake light buy one from VW and not local Motor Factor, subtle differences.

The spare wheel carrier mechanism (rachet and cable) has failed on my 2002 VW Sharan, does anyone know of any likely sources of such a part in the Hampshire area please.....it appears to be simple to replace, two bolts.

Many thanks

I've not got around to replacing this yet, however, now need to get it sorted.

Popped into the local VW franchise on Friday to get one, however, the picture on their system is totally different to the one that came off my car.

Now I am wondering whether this part has been changed as it is a design fault and whether there has been a recall for this??

Does anyone have an inkling??

Any answers would be appreciated

sorry, to add

vauxhall show on TIS that the problem is caused by the spined shaft not being greased when assembled and the sure is to seperate the box and engine and grease the splined shaft, the dealers will not admit this though and will charge an arm and a leg to do it (just for a change)....

I noticed the dipstick in my 1 and three quater year onld BMW was badly corroded in October and had it replaced. On checking the car over two months later I notice it is rusty again. This does not sound right to me and sounds like it could be indicative of moisture in the engine.
This was highlighted to the dealere whilst in warranty who just replaced it but now it is out of warranty.
Any thoughts or am i reading something into nothing
Thanks Read more

My BMW has same rusty dip-stick

The grommets at the top make sense as to the cause....

SlowThing

Hoping someone can help with this one. My T4 (1.9TD) has started to squeal for a few seconds when I start the engine (sounds like a slipping belt). Yesterday when I left work I noticed that while it was doing this, the rev counter needle was only showing about 300 revs, although the engine is reving normally. As soon as the squealing stopped the revs rose to the normal 850 or so at idle.

Does the tacho get its signal for engine speed from the alternator? If so would this would explain the low reading if the belt was slipping a bit when cold - causing the squealing. I thought the belt was tensioned by a spring loaded roller - so how can it slip? Could the squealing be the alternator bearings starting to die? As the squaling starts to lessen the rev counter needle flickers a bit, and when the noise stops altogether the needle then rises to its normal posistion.

The battery light didn't come on but maybe it had enough 'oomph' to prevent this. Read more

Depending on the year, your alternator may be fitted with an over-run clutch built into the belt pulley.

These have been known to give problems - particularly squealing - at start-up.

Just a note to anyone who uses or hires a Transit Connect and a fuse blows.
We (Royal Mail) have hired in a few extra vans for Christmas including the aforementioned van and the reversing lights had packed in, turned out to be the switch, but, after checking the bulbs i could not find the fuse box and had to turn to the manual.
It was not in a very obvious place-1,open glove box.
2,push sides of glove box inwards and box will drop down.
3,pick up foxes mints,3 month old copy of the Sun and couple of two pence pieces.
You will now see in the gloom a fuse box.
On the back is a diagram of the fuses not actually corresponding to the layout of the fuses.
After checking the wrong fuses and realising the ampage is wrong you will notice tiny numbers against the diagram and corresponding tiny numbers against the correct fuse.
Simple when you know how.
Seriously it is quite a good van, miles better than the current vauxhall combos. Read more

Ford also sold into some European countries the Escort estate with no side windows and the Escort van with side windows. It depended on that countrie's requirements and was usually to do with vehicle taxation classes.

I have whatever the cheapest is that b&q do !

I bought it as most of our back garden is gravelled, but we have loads of small-leaved shrubs and it is difficult the rake the leaves up without raking the gravel up as well, so it is good to just vacuum them up.

I don't think that any of them, however expensive, will be all that good for vacuuming wet leaves, and the other thing to bear in mind is they can be quite heavy and cumbersome to use

Dynamic Dave

Contemplating a handheld pc as this years xmas present to myself. (is it called an IPAQ, or is that name specific to Hewlett Packard ?)

Rather than buying a separate sat-nav and speed camera locator, I want them all housed in the one package, but these are secondary functions that I'll be using it for.

Ideally, I want it to have bluetooth, WIFI, etc. I gather Hewlett Packard are the bees knees when it comes to IPAQ's. Is this correct?

I initially looked at the HP IPAQ 1710 and GPS package, but upon further investigation it doesn't appear to have bluetooth.

Can anyone recommend something else? I guess pricewise something upto around the £300 to £400 area. Read more

Just wanted to say thanks (Stuartli if my memory is correct). I downloaded this free from Google during an idle moment over Xmas and it was just what I was looking for to sort out my digital photos which were spread out all over the place. It is free and very simple to use - I particually like the Red eye remover which is very effective. I will be RTFM to see what else it can do but I have already achieved what I wanted without it !
