Primera 1.6 1997 hesitates - McP
My 1.6 97 Primera hesitates and accelerates poorly around 3500-4000 rpm.
It drives perfectly under this. It has done 110,000 miles.
The problem is more noticeable in 3rd gear and above.
It feels as though it is misfiring slightly and whistles slightly. I had a new exhaust from the cat back fitted 6-9 months ago. I think it was 'misfiring' before this but not whistling. The misfire was improved some time ago by wd-40 in the dizzy cap. I have recently fitted a new cap and rotor bought from Nissan - Had trouble finding a copy.
The hesitation remains. I am living with it at the moment by driving under 3500 rpm.

Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Ian

Sounds like an HT problem. Does it still have the original plug leads? Does it only misfire under load (i.e. if you just rev it stationary over 3500rpm is it ok?).

Yes it still has the same leads. It revs OK when stationary.
Would you recommend new leads and if so are Nissan the best?

I would say almost certainly an HT-related problem.

The HT leads are well past their best by now. Nissan are pobably best but expensive, but you should be able to get a decent aftermarket set of about £30.

Spot on Aprilia.
Starts and idles better and accelerates past the 3500 revs smoothly.
Local shop charged me £23 for a set made for the primera.
Nissan wanted over £50.

Cheers for your help.

Glad to help. Just bear in mind your £23 set will not last as long as the Nissan ones - doesn't really matter at 110k miles I guess, but on a newer or 'treasured' car it always pays to go OEM on HT leads in my experience. I have had some particularly nasty experiences with 'pattern' Vauxhall leads.
