I don't think I'll be switching from Tesco's ordinary unleaded...:-)
But if you have a performance car that will benefit I'm sure it's worthwhile.

No, thank you for bringing it to my attention Mr K!
Might put a splash in the S60 if they start selling it oop north.
|
I note that all the local-ish Tescos I visit stock it.
I have been using Shell for a while now as it is cheaper than Tesco hence I missed the new product.
|
Well I won't hold my breath waiting for it to appear at a Tesco near me.
I tried Shell Optimax 98 RON a while ago, as Volvo recommend the higher octane, but I couldn't really notice much of a difference performance wise. My MPG got marginally better, but not enough to cancel out the extra cost of the fuel.
It'll be interesting to see how far and wide it becomes available.
Quite a few drivers on www.pistonheads.co.uk seem to think their high performance motors have responded positively to 99 RON.

Tesco already do a 97RON Super Unleaded which is available near me at Tesco Walsgrave, Coventry. I've used it a few times and my Rover turbo certainly runs better on it. i just wish more Tesco stations would stock it - all the others around don't have it.
I presume this 99 octane stuff must be all new as I don't recall the 97RON stuff being labelled as 'green' or 'part bio' or anything similar.
Personally I find I get more performance and smoother running but no improvement in economy when I use a Super Unleaded. Just the way my engines ecu is set up I guess.

This bioethanol is a way of getting rid of all the sugar beet which British Sugar (Silverspoon) are no longer allowed to buy under EU laws, they are forced to buy 30% of sugar from abroad (cane sugar). Therefore, Lincs and Norfolk farmers are left with piles of rotting beet which they are forced to sell at low prices to make bioethanol.
|
Evo magazine tested Tesco 99 octane fuel in the last issue (think its the December issue). They compared it with 7 other fuels and were impressed with it. I think it only gives a performance improvement if your cars ECU is capable of adapting to the higher octane level.
The Govt. has now committed itself to meeting the EU target of 5.75% of road fuel supplied from renewable sources by 2010, which is going to be a real struggle if they dont start actively promoting it.
The problem is they get 20p per litre less tax revenue on bioethanol and biodiesel...
Its ridiculous that farmers are paid not to grow crops on thousands of acres of set aside land; this could all be turned over to production of "fuel crops". This would help the environment and make us slightly less reliant on OPEC oil.

It's great stuff. I have a Jaguar XK8 with a nikasil engine. I must use as low sulphur content as possible, so it's good for that reason alone. The real benfit is the fuel economy. I've been using Tesco 99 for 2 months and I get over 28MPG out of my 4ltr V8, if I use a normal 97 Super, I barely get 24MPG if I'm lucky. I would agree it's the lower torque where you feel a slight difference. I just wish Tesco would get a move on and make it available at all stores.

I was at a Tesco station near Liverpool last night and it had a 99 Octane pump.

Anywhere around Manchester got the RON99 in yet....?
