Is this a difficult task to do, like it is on the Mondeo?
What would be a reasonable price for the job? It's a 1.8.

I've heard that Redex consists simply of methyl alcohol (meths), kerosene (paraffin) and auto transmission fluid.

But in what proportions?

Is there actually any difference between Redex Carb Cleaner, Petrol Injection Cleaner and Diesel Injection Cleaner other than the label on the container? Read more

Dave N

Most petrol cleaners are just a mixture of solvents. Usually Xylene, toluene, and acetone. Nothing special, which is why they don't really do much at those concentrations.

When i bought my 1998 focus it came with the standard remote key and two black keys both with blue chips on them, the trouble is the two black keys wont disable my immobiliser, does any one know how to programe them? Read more

trymybest

when you try the standard keys does the pats light flash faster than normal,if it does it is one of two things.Either the keys have not been programmed or the key itself is the wrong one,the blue dot on the key should not have any letters or numbers on it.

Please can anyone help regarding a problem I have with the dashboard instruments on my Ford Focus TDDI estate (02 reg, facelifted model)?

Several times in the last week, when I've turned the ignition on, the speedo, rev counter, fuel & temperature gauges, odometer and several (but not all) warnings lights have failed to operate. Each time the problem has gone away when I've used the car later and the instruments have returned to normal. The problem never occurs or fixes itself when the car is running - only when the ignition is switched on. The trip meter keeps its value and the dials don't do their self-test sweep.

The local Ford dealer say that it could be an earth, fuse or sensor problem. But since it is intermittent it's going to be hard to be sure of demonstrating the problem if I take it in to them.

I have tried remaking the earths next to the battery, removed and replaced fuses and jiggled the connector on the back of the instrument panel. I'm starting to think that it's either a faulty instrument panel or a 'sensor fault' (but which one?)

Any advice would be much appreciated. Read more

CAndyH

Thanks for the advice.
I have cleaned up several earths and the problem has not reoccurred in the last week. I suspect that is coincidence and will have a look at the speed sensor next time (if) it happens.

The 'full sweep' of the instruments only occurs if I've pulled a fuse.

Seeing coyote's sad tale, of his insurance company discovering his rear tyres were bald after he had had an accident and therefore declining his claim on grounds of an unroadworthy vehicle, how often do the rest of you carry out the traditional POWER (Petrol, Oil, Water, Electrics, Rubber) checks?

Personally I was brought up to do them every day before driving the vehicle but must admit that I tend only to check tyres, visually as I walk round the vehicle, and lights every day now. I leave oil, water and tyre pressures/close inspection to once a week, unless the tyre visual shows obvious deflation. Petrol/DERV there is obviously a gauge in front of my nose all the time.

Seems that increased reliability and longer servicing intervals are possibly lulling us into a false sense of security on some things.

Come on, be honest, have you let things slide? Read more

p - as required
o - every week
w - every week
e - every week
r - pressures every week, visual check at least as often

Me too. Weekly check also includes brake fluid, coolant, and screenwash.

The middle rear seat belt (normal diagonal type) on my Pug 406 estate will not pull out of the reel. The mechanism has permanently caught the belt in the retracted position. There appears to be no obvious way of getting into the seat back, where the reel is located, to effect a repair. This seems to leave me with two options:
1.Get a another seat back, either new (probably expensive) or from a scrap yard (less expensive)
2.Cut the belt and live without it as I only very rarely carry three people in the back.

I'm tempted to go for the second option (being tight with my hard earned cash) but then thought of possible implications with the MOT test. If I remove the belt then it effectively does not exist and therefore cannot be a test failure.

Can anyone comment? Thanks.

Oldman - Interesting forum, I may have been a bit hasty chopping the seat belt off although it made me feel better at the time as it was cheesing me right off! I'll have to wait and see if it fails the mot.

Hi
I have to travel From Liverpool to Northop a week on Monday.
arriving at 9-30am.My usual route to NWales is Runcorn Bridge,M56 A55 etc.I do not know what the traffic is like at that time of the morning and possible hold ups.Is there anyone out there that regularly travels to Queensferry at that time of the morning. Thanks Read more

Wales Forester

I live in the area you're travelling to.
I would agree with the tunnel route, then M53, exit at Hooton and A41, A550, A494, A55 - BUT the A550 is currently closed because of major roadworks between it's junction with the A41 at Hooton and the A540 junction.
I would suggest that you still exit from M53 at Hooton then follow the A41 towards Chester as far as the A5117 roundabout, then join the A5117 towards Queensferry which after half a mile or so will take you past the end of the M56 and on through Shotwick along the A550, A494 and A55 to Northop.
I would say that this will be quicker time wise and definitely less mileage than staying on the M53, then A55 Chester Southerly Bypass.

You shouldn't be delayed after around 9am on any of my suggested route. Hooton to Northop takes roughly 25 minutes going that route at a steady pace.

Hi,
I seem to have become an unwitting victim of some outrageous behaviour by a large multinational car rental company - who shall obviously remain nameless.
I work for a large electronics company who have a contract with said rental company. We do not use their insurance, but my company's own insurance instead.
About 3 (three!) months ago I rented a car for travel on company business (something I do very frequently). A couple of days ago I received a letter from the rental company's claims department accusing me of having damaged the car rented on that occasion. They attached "evidence" - namely a pre-rental damage report (showing none) and a post-rental report indicating a "rubber type" scrape all along one side of the car. The joke is that this is the first I've heard about it. Since we deposit the cars in the company car park for the rental company to collect later there isn't normally a face-to-face handover when you return a rented car.
Clearly they are trying it on and hoping that my company policy will just pay out without disputing it (it's a small sum - only £70). I replied denying any responsibility, to which they have replied that I need to provide evidence to prove I didn't do it!!!
I have now notified my HR department, but am unsure how I should proceed. I expect them to just tell me to claim on company insurance. However I'm worried what it will do to my personal car insurance and my NCB. Don't I have to tell my insurance company of any accident claim, regardless of fault?
I think I have to get my company to somehow get the rental company to withdraw the claim altogether - is this the right strategy, and do I have any chance?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

If you hand it back to your company and they choose
to pay it then that's up to them. My view
is that I wouldn't see that as being involved in an
accident. As far as you're concerned the car was fine
when you left it so it's not your concern.
It's a similar situation to lease cars going back - there's
always some random figure for re-instatement that the leasing company dreams
up. I only found out by chance a couple of
years ago that if it's a couple of hundred pounds the
firm just pays it. I don't regard that has an insurance
incident.
I would reiterate my earlier comments that I cannot imagine that
your company would have a policy that will allow them to
make an insurance claim for £70.
*If* the company is making a claim on their insurance then
you would know about it, because you'd be asked to fill
in a claim form (or at least provide details of the
'incident').

Thanks, I'll give it a go. It still worries me that the rental company have an "accident report form" bearing my name though, which may one day come back to haunt me.

hello everyone first post here. Its time to change the car in, have always wanted a 3 series coupe, and have 11k burning a hole. I've seen some V and W plated 328ci with about 45k on clock with the options & colour I like, or I could go for a newer 323 or 320. My questions are:
1 - am I scraping the barrel for a 328 ci / risking buying a problem car at this price?
2 - apart from knocks from the front / rear suspension, what are any other potential problems to look for? Read more

I want a nice car for the occasional long run and holidays. Having considered Lexus LS, Audi A8, BMW 7 series I have come to the conclusion that a nice CLK in a strong colour below 100k miles would be best. But which one and what should I be getting for £10k? Thanks Read more

A 200 will average around 26mpg and as the engines get bigger the economy goes down.My 2001 200k which is going this week has been a catalogue of disaster the electronics are a nightmare, the car is well built and the mechanical side is very good but when those malfiunction lights and the engine management lights start appearing reach for your wallet.Get a Pug 406 coupe far nicer car and you can get a diesel version and spares in abundance.
