Huge smash on M4 at 8am today between jct 26 and 27

I put the brakes on, the guy behind me swerved to avoid my rear end, but he got hit from behind, and another 10 or so cars couldn't stop in time, and all ended up introducing themselves to each other.

When will people learn to leave adequate braking distances?

I drove off, as i was unhit, and technically not involved. I called the emergency services and 5-live travel desk immediately, but should i have stopped?? Read more

i just put my brakes on hard enough so i didn't end up in the back seat of the car in front of me!

I know the police have my phone number, so i guess they'll call me if they need a witness statement.

No, not a 'How good is this' thread.

Just thought I'd post up that the car took £60 worth of BP Ultimate from the light coming on to me driving about 20 miles to get my wallet and to a garage. Not bad considering I've never had the light come on, normally use normal diesel and it's normally £55 ish. So that's a difference of a mere £4-£5, probably less. Not bad for a 'premium' fuel.

I haven't noticed any performance boosts, well, nothing tangible, but maybe it will do more miles to a tank. I also put some Millers Diesel P+ in. Read more

Being a nightshift truck driver (fancied a change after years of days), I drive most motorway & A roads in the country through the night & can't help but notice how early the rush hour seems to start in earnest. When I was a kid & went out with my Dad in his truck, we normally started around 3-30 to 4am & would most often than not have the roads to ourselves till at least 7am, this being the late 70's to late 80's. On the nightshift it seems to me that the rush hour is now starting at 3-30 to 4am so that people can get a head start to beat the queues. This is just the suits, never mind your milkie, postie & suchlike. If this is how much traffic volume has gone up in the 15-20yrs, whats it going to be like in the next 15. Are people just going to stay at their work Monday - Friday and go home at weekend, because by the time they get home during the week it's a case of "Hi honey I'm home see you in the morning, goodnight". By 2020 could we be looking at 24hr rush hours or not? Is there a solution or will we just have to grin & bear it, if & when it happens. Pity us people that don't have jobs that allow us to work from home. Oh well never mind. Read more

I certainly do not envy you guys! I live 5 minutes drive from my work. I could walk but I like to go home for lunch. A tank of petrol will last me three weeks. I don't earn as much as I would in the city but life is much more pleasant in a small town.

Happy Blue!

I always use an excellent insurance broker for all my insurance business and it helps that the senior partner (a friend) lives in the same area as me and drives decent cars, so I know that he will get the best rates for large houses and good cars for our postcode.

The renewal notice came round yesterday with a renewal premium from NU of £1,520 - an increase of about 40%. Fortunately, the broker had found Zurich who would bring it back to something more sensible - still just over £1,000 - but what I expect and am used to.

We have had no claims for over three years and no change to circumstances in the same period, so why increase the premium so much? They were asking me to take my business away. Why?

More realistic to say a total-loss accident would wipe out the premiums of 27 people for a year. Same sum, but presented differently. Put in that context, with the relative scarcity of total-loss accidents per insured car, and I can assure you that motor insurance is still profitable in the UK, provided you are prepared to sacrifice major market share to concentrate on your known, quality business.

sounds a bit offish comment to me, more so because this is supposed to be A DISCUSSION ROOM.
surely in a discussion room we can discuss and chat about relivent issues and this site is used by the USER and without us it would not exist.
bit of big brother and bully boy tactics to me and if thats the case i wont be using it.
im not ONE of the ones your accusing but to me great britain is the country of the free and free speach.
this is not a complaint but i do feel that your suppressing us to what you think we all should do and say in what is at the end of the day a public service.
ita annoying because of our everyday lives is slowly changing because we have to addapt to other peoples/ways because its correct.

In a way I'm glad someone has brought this up, as only last night Hugo, Smokie and myself were discussing how we can bring the Backroom back on track and lower the amount of inane babble.

To clarify,

Discussions regarding a certain individuals boot on his car, and colour of his car were once funny. That ceased after the umpteenth reference to it. (That, by the way isn't a dig at the individual concerned, but to the people who are forever refering to it.)

Similarily, discussions regarding Mondeo TDCi's being the dog's danglies have become yesterday's news.

Threads are starting to degenerate, either by being highjacked and going totally off topic; people being overly pedantic; people treating this place like a lads club; as well as 101 other reasons that I'm sure you're all aware of.

As with any other forum, humour and other banter are par of the course, BUT ONLY up to a point.

Ultimately this is a motoring forum, and therefore discussions should be of that nature - IHAQ and computer related questions excepted.

Right, now that is out of the way, if you have any further opinions regarding how this site is moderated, then direct them to the global moderators email address, as mentioned in one of the sticky's at the top of the page.

Hello,

I work for a small company for whom I do some business mileage in my own car, this has recently increased and is likley to average up to 1000 miles a month. I currently claim mileage at 40p/mile and can do so for up to 10000 mile p/a I understand. My car costs me under 10p/mile even at today's fuel costs so the additional 30p means I am in profit even allowing for wear and tear, servicing and depreciation.

However perhaps there is another way, lets say that whatever car I drive it would cost 10p/mile in fuel therefore the 30p mile over 10k p/a will cost the company £3000 which is £250/month with which we could perhaps take out a 3 year 20k/year fully maintained lease or contract hire plan. I realise that the 40p/mile I claim is tax deductable for the company, as is though the costs of contract hire, additionally I would being paying BiK tax once again. So two questions:

1/ Are there any major flaws in my logic?

2/ What car could we get for this sort of monthly figure?

Regards. Read more

Thanks Ian, that does not seem to bad to me and 25k p/a would cover it, and that is VAT inc so the actual cost to the company would be nearer £300/month.

Forum eBay cars
Dipstick

Why am I finding it so hard to get a simple answer to this one, other than incompetence?

If a trader advertises a car on eBay, and says "sold as seen, no warranty, this in an auction mate" is that right?

My FEELING is that he is bound by Sale of Goods etc and has to offer the six months warranty that he would if buying from his forecourt, whether he likes it or not. So I just don't bother at all with any trader that says that on eBay as he is clearly dodgy from the off.

Or IS eBay really an auction legally? There's nothing in their help and I'm sure this must have been asked a zillion times.

I'm pretty sure eBay is not technically an auction, but an advertising venue like Autotrader? Read more

But surely the point is that he's not claiming it's got a full service history. He's described fully and honestly and leaves it to you to make your own mind up.
It's the people who mis-describe cars that are the problem

Have come across probs with blocked cats. Check first that there is good vacuum at the Turbo wastegate operating bellows. No end of problems in this area with split pipes and failed vac motors bleeding off the vac. Vac control solenoids have been known to fail but I have never had to change one. If you suspect blocked cat loosen off the downpipe flange and give it a try.

Hi

Am a named driver on my brothers policy and have had an accident, will he lose is no claims discount if I am found to be at fault.

Thanks Read more

Bill Payer

Depends on whose policy you claim on! If you have
your own insurance you could claim on that but you are
likely only to have 3rd party insurance, so if you were
at fault you may be left with a big repair bill.

If the OP was named on the other drivers policy then that probably counts as being specifically insured. If he mentions his own insurance then they might try to share the cost across both companies (assuming they are different). When making a motor claim do they ask during the claims process if you have any other insurance which might cover you?
