i have a n reg 106 1.5 diesel 65k on the clock and im getting a noise when traveling between 50 and 70 mph it seems to start after about 20 miles on m/way and gets louder when i take my foot off the juice but stops when i depress the clutch.the only way i can explain the noise is its like a dry bearing.i also had a rear wheel bearing that made the same kind of sound but i know its not that ,definate frontal noise. I would also add that the noise would also cease if I put it in neutral and coast, so that seemed to eliminate the clutch bearing.

Anyone any experience of car hire in Bulgaria, particularly from Bourgas Airport pick up? Read more

BobbyG

Well in case anyone is travelling out to Bulgaria sometime in the future, I booked my car through www.economycarrentals.com and this ultimately got me a car from www.rentomobile.com

I would recommend them, they were cheaper than the others for a Focus estate and were very flexible with their drop off times and locations.

Driving in Bulgaria was an expereince. There is the one major road that links up from Bourgas airport, through Sunny Beach, Obzor and to Varna where the other airport is. This is a single lane road, through mountain passes and the Bulgarians always overtake, usually on blind corners! Very challenging but not once did I hear a driver blast his horn at another for cutting him up or trying to force him off the road! Most cars travel with headlights on, presumably so that in a distance you can tell whether a car is coming towards you or away from you!

Nearly missed my flight back today due to a head on crash between two cars just outside Bourgas airport. Looked very nasty and full road was closed as a result. It happened about 20 vehicles in front of me and its times like that you thank someone up there!

...as it came from a friend who normally sends loads of amusing links, jokes etc:

Have you locked the keys in the car?

If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys or remote are home, call someone at home on your cell phone and
ask them to get your car keys/remote.

Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the other person at home press the unlock button on your key remote whilst holding it near the phone on their end.

Your car will unlock. It will save someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of
miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the remote for your car, you can unlock the doors
(or boot this way!)

Editor's Note:

"It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a cell phone each time we tried it."

You'd think Wally Zebon's comment described something that doesn't happen. But a friend asked his mother-in-law to lock his car. She pressed the remote to lock it, then as windows etc. were closing threw the keys in through the then open sunroof! And then it wasn't open any more.

The mind boggles.

I have a clicking noise comoing from the left hand side of my engine as you look at it. It increase in speed with engine revs. It occurs on about 4 out of 5 start-ups and last for the duration of my journey. The oil levels are fine and the timing belt was changed 30,000 miles ago. Any ideas? Read more

Hi, I've got a Golf mark 4 GTI 1.8T.

My clutch is 'weak' aparantly, it's very hard to get it into 1st and reverse (physically it's very stiff). I'm wondering if I should be not driving the car before I get the new clutch fitted in case it damages something else like the gearbox or something?

It drives fine apart from this and changing between other gears is OK too...

Any opinions welcomed apart from 'you should have bought a Honda' etc!

Thanks Read more

Is it cable or hydraulically activated?

Ifs it?s done by cable, it could just need adjusting.

As for reverse, it?s a trait of some gearboxes (like my polo?s) to grate when going in. Tip: depress and hold the clutch for a few seconds before attempting to put into reverse. Of course, this won?t help the problem with first. Try putting into second and then into first while at rest(used to work on old BL stuff)

As you can probably tell, I?m not that knowledgeable about clutches and gearboxes.

I quote
"Bright, exciting exterior colours are complemented inside by two-tone Recaro sports seats"

Ye gods. I went into the local ford dealer to get some some < whisper > mondeo brochures < normal voice > and they had an ST2 in in bright orange. Holly smoke - what a colour. The salesman said they were all suffering from solar radiation burns inside the showroom.

Talk about dramatic. You have to see one.

The new Focus saloon is a great looker so an ST
saloon could be a great seller however both saloon and estate
could take sales from S40/V50's with the same engine>>

Not to mention the ST220.

Police have been given new powers to confiscate vehicles of drivers who don't have a licence or insurance.

The move aims to rid the streets of dangerous vehicles and stop people driving illegally.

POLICE today vowed to tow cars away if drivers are stopped and found to have no valid licence or insurance.

It comes after new legislation was introduced to seize vehicles from the drivers on the road if they admitted not having insurance or a licence.

The first (only?) comment at the bottom sums the problem up I guess

If you can't afford car insurance then you should still be able to drive, because what if you need to pick up the kids, do your shopping etc? Also, if you couldn't pass your test but can't afford to get taxis/buses everywhere you should be allowed as long as you know what you're doing.

Cliff, you can buy stamps at the post office for this
purpose. They used to be specifically for road tax but I
think they are more general savings type ones now. We use
them and they do help. Monthly direct debit for insurance also
helps.

I didn't realise that. I wasn't thinking of just a general saving scheme or a way of spreading the cost, more a way of actually buying tax and insurance cover in small bits.

It would also be useful for people who need very short term tax/insurance, such as when recovering a new car from a distance.
There have been a number of threads based around the suggestion of a) driving another car on one's main policy, or b) using the MOT dodge. That's a different topic, I realise.

Coming back to the main point though, I suppose the real problem is people who simply don't accept the need to be legal at all, and who will never pay for tax or insurance however packaged. As the car is often stolen as well, they probably can get away with it indefinitely unless caught red-handed or involved in an accident and apprehended.

My steering wheel has always been off centre by about 1" to the right, i've just changed my steel 16" wheels to alloy 17" and the steering wheel was spot on, why would this be, shouldn't make any difference surely, anyway went to get the tracking done which was out, now trackings spot on the steering wheel is offset about half an inch the other way, i'm confused. Well, took it back as suggested and the tracking was still out a bit, steering wheels better, just out very slightly (1/4") i can live with that, thanks.

Hi Guys
Any suggestions for the problem I am finding. New car purchased early October. Only just past the 1000 miles. Am experiencing an intermittent misfire when the engine revs are between 1600 and 2000 revs. Seems to happen most often after backing off the gas then pressing accelerator again to move on, eg when rounding tight corner/roundabout or just in slow moving traffic. Feels as if the engine stops totally for a fraction of a second then fires up again resulting in a noticable jolt or judder.
Have noticed that it does not happen when the engine is cold. You should also be aware that this car had the tandem fuel pump fail completely after only being driven for 12 miles from new!!!. Took them 10 days to get a replacement from Germany!! Don't know if this is relevant as I think the misfire was there even before the pump gave up.

My Mondeo TDCi also very occasionally exhibits such symptoms at simlar revs, strange, totally different engines and fuel systems, reckon it could be something like the EGR valve fluctuating on the point of the turbo coming on song, it only does it on a steady throttle, again it has never got any worse in 97k miles.

Nevertheless get the dealer to check it out.
