In my 1996 A4 1.8 petrol (186k miles) the dashboard ABS warning light comes on. It only occurs when the car is laden with 3-4 passengers. Restarting the engine sometimes cures it

Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up)

Suspect one of the speed sensor wires at the rear going open circuit when the suspension moves when 4-up. VAG Com should be able to pinpoint the problem, the majority of good independents specialising in diagnostics are equipped with VAG Com, check out Yellow Pages.

hi, i bought a 3 year old car last year, which was previously a motability car, as confirmed by the v5. These cars are inspected every year, including all servicing and again on handover back to motability after the 3 years lease is up. I'm not sure whether i can call this full service history as i don't have any documents to say it's been serviced? The garage that sold it to me called it FSH, but maybe that's naivety on my part. I want to sell the car now so need to know how to describe service history.
Thanks Read more

It is a condition of the Motability contract that the car is serviced as per schedule.

Ever wondered why people in Western cultures think blondes are a bit vacant?

Well, many caucasians are born with fair hair which gets darker as they get older. Consequently blone hair gets associated with limited intelligence!

Did anyone see the convoy of police cars down the A3, heading toward Guildford this morning? Any idea what was going on?

There was an unmarked old style Land Rover in the middle of the cars...strange. Read more

Any advice on choosing a family estate car?

My missus and i have got a 4 month old baby and are fed up trying to fit all the baby stuff into a peugeot 306. The pushchair will only just get in the boot, let alone trying to get in all the other stuff.

We are therefore looking for a medium to large estate car that is reliable, loads of space, (flexibility with seats would be good), economical etc.

I hate to admit it but i have had a look at MPV's because of the flexibility and the load space (with the back row of seats out). It goes against every moan i have come out with about mums dropping off at school, their 1 kid in their espace.

So please help. My missus hates volvos, so i have no chance getting one of those, no matter how much sense it makes. Not a big fan of fords or vauxhalls, or french. Would prefer a Japanese if poss.

Budget is about £5k - £6k. Diesel would be good but economical petrol better.

Any (constructive :-) ) advice would be appreciated! Read more

Citroen Picasso 1.6 SX Y reg ish for your money in good order.

I have seen X reg ones at dealers for aroung the £4 to £5k mark.

FiL has the X reg which is great to drive. The only thing I don't like is the width of the windscreen pillars. They're no wider than usual but their position relitive to my head makes for a couple of blind spots that take some getting used to.

Most excellent. For "Highly Modified RS4" read "RS4 with surplus Concorde Jet Engine on it". I have never seen any car accelerate that fast.

One set of pads is almost half again worn as the other side , plus it has started to make a grinding noise under heavy braking,

Is it a Vectra B or C, as they have different rear brake set ups. I did hear from a fitter at a main dealer that the Vectra C eats rear pads faster than the fronts for some reason.

I have the Vadis CD which is a really useful guide to repairs etc but would be much better if I had the connection tool for Volvo cars which would let me find fault codes. Does anyone know of a source please? Read more

Have a look at:

www.scantool.net/scanned_list.shtml#nissan ---- it also lists Volvo cars.

The 100$ box shown there produces a serial data stream (RS232) at 9600 baud (bits per sec) when plugged into the car's OBDII connector, (lead supplied). You then have to connect it to a PC or a suitable PDA to read the data.

Otherwise you will need a self contained analiser that has a suitable display and these can be expensive.

Use this search in google: ^EOBDII ^data ^encoding ^European
(substitute a plus sign for the ^ and note the space in front of it)

Also have a look at www.gendan.co.uk/

and: www.cnuio.com/en/03.asp

China is a possible source of cheaper electronics. Problem is getting your hands on the right box of tricks.

Let us all know how you get on. Many on here will be interesed.

Dad is now looking to replace his 51 plate Audi A4 1.9TDi and doesnt know what to go for. Choices hes narrowed down to are:

BMW 320D
Audi A4/A6 2.0TDi
Alfa 157 JTD - may have to keep Audi a bit longer for this!

He will be doing 40K a year and running costs are not that important as company pays, however he only gets 9 pence a mile for his diesel so needs to at least break even with this.

Current Audi has been faultless however he ran Rover 800s for years so wont be too bothered about reliability!!

Anyone have any experience/opinions on these..obviously will do test drives but that doesnt give a true ownership experience.

Does anyone know hot to set the analog clock in Renault Megane? Read more

psycho

Thank you both for your replies! BobbyG, it worked just like you described. That and the fact that I know now, that it's actually a digital clock. I already tried turning this button, but as I thought back then it's an analog clock, I gave up when the button would not rotate. The trick is, that the button rotates just a little bit and the clock starts moving only after 2 or 3 seconds as you hold it in that position, not right away.
