I'm taking a lwb Transit full of furniture & assorted stuff to my brother in Leicester next week and am pondering the best route.

Usually I'll head down the A1 (or A68 then A1) and take it from there, but I was wondering about taking the M74 M6 and maybe even M6 toll this time.

The idea is that usually I'm travelling in the car, but this time it's a large(ish) van and the M6 route might be less of a chore.

I don't think theres a big difference in mileage.

Route starts Edinburgh and will be daytime Thursday one way, Friday return.

Any thoughts??

Thanks. Read more

Thanks one and all.

I took the A701 - M74 - M6 - A50 - M1

A701 was an excellent tip, nice drive and very quiet.

A50 was good too - and afforded the opportunity to get fuel at non-motorway prices!

Would definitely use the same route again.

Cheers!

I have had problems with my C3 which is 2003 model. I had problems with the steering rack - knocking noise whilst stationery and moving. The dealer 'modified' this and the problem still exists - dealer not interested. Has anybody else had similar problems with the rack ? Read more

Can anyone help - 1.8 bog standard mondeo (Jan 2000 - older shape) central locking has just stopped working. The red light on the dash by the clock is blinking and there is a regular clicking sound coming from somewhere near the steering column, sounds like an old-fashioned relay clicking. Is there anything obvious I should check before I take it to the garage? Cheers. Read more

If you're averaging around 41mpg then this is similar to what I get from the Mondeo TDCI Estate hire cars I sometimes drive.

Hi
My son's Mk5 Fiesta y reg 29000 mls has a noisy thrust race and or gearbox.
I know a noisy thrust race is common on Fiestas and his car has this quite bad but a similar noise can be heard whilst driving through the gears, is it the thrust or worse?. If the gear lever is moved back or forward whilst driving in gear the noise gets even worse - it's like a high pitched buzz.
Any ideas or knowledge out there.
thanks, nivek9876 Read more

Hi, Thanks for your reply, exactly as you describe, but the noise is from the gearbox area not the gear stick, can be made worse by pulling or even resting your hand on it, sounds like something is not quite lined up, bit like a non synchro gearbox of old, can't be heard outside the car though, can't really be low g/box oil level all underneath is dry as a bone, no leaks anywhere. nivek9876

I have been offered Guaranteed Asset Protection in connection with a new Mitsubishi Coplt Red, for £395 for 3 years. This is a top-up to normal insurance which, of course, only offers current market value in the case of total loss. With GAP added, you get back the full invoice price. Does this seem a good deal? That's one version of it. Another pays the differnce between what you get from the insurance company pay out and what is owing on finance. GAP is a potential minefield - you need to know what you are getting and read through it carefully. There are more get out clauses than you would believe. I've always avoided it like the plague as to date no one has offered it for nothing!

Anyone any idea how many vehicles are damaged from falling rockets on 5/11? Anyone ever suffered damage to vehicles from same?

I would imagine that a thick cardboard tube with a stick attached would make a bit of a ding after falling......what.....a couple of hundred feet? Read more

Its a mystery but last week the fake-wood hinged cover to the cassette player closed perfectly now it remains open and won't catch when I push it down.

Is there an easy answer or am I facing another rip-off trip to the dealer? Read more
