Help, I have recently bought a golf 1.9 tdi 1997 p reg , the car runs fine but it has got a problem it will run ok then it will just cut out, i have to leave it for a few minutes till it will start again. i thought it might of been the diesel but i filled it up and it still does the same. i thought it might be overheating but it is not. Can any one help with this ?
Please Thanks Read more
There's always a range of possibilities; but "Relay 109," the engine control relay [in the fusebox] has been the bane of all [diesel] VAG's for many years.
The good news is that the [latest] modified one is merely pennies [£13?] and takes just seconds to change. Probably worth doing first anyway; because the alternatives [ignition switch etc.] aren't so nice and simple.
I recently bought a 2001 Y reg Passat. It was advertised as having Traction Control, but I've since discovered that this feature wasn't installed in Passats until August 2002.
Do I have any comeback against the garage that sold the car? Can TC be retro fitted to the car and if so could I ask the garage to pay for this to happen?
The car is still advertised on Autotrader (removed link to avoid naming & shaming - although the link didn't work for me! smokie) Read more
Why not express your disatisfaction to the seller on the basis of the missing TC button and take what ever he offers (if anything), free service, £50, whatever.
I'm thinking about parting with £2.2k for a 130k miler Astra. Model is 2.0 DTi 16v CD and it seems drive ok and engine seems pretty useful for a diesel. No niggles that HJ's guide points out for it and it's got full dealer history, new cambelt, fuel pump replaced not long ago so all in all seems to point to a fairly decent buy - although the interior seems dull, but then it is a vauxhall I guess.
Anyone had one for a while/driven one regularly that can give me an opinion?

Hi, long time browser first time poster.
The story is I replaced the speed sensor on the gearbox in March because of an intermittent problem, this fixed it no prob but yesterday it died again. This time it doesn't seem intermittent its ust not working, I checked the connections behind the cluster and their fine.
So I guess I want to make sure its the cluster or should I try taking the speed sensor back to pug and see if they'll replace it?
I'm just hoping its not a torn wire somewhere...
Thanks in advance guys!

Probably reffered to as a "speedo interface".

Due to my son rapidly approaching his 17th birthday, I am going to have to dispose of my '2nd car' and buy a much smaller engined one. I really would be grateful to get a idea of what I can expect to get and where I should pitch the asking price - or whether I should SORN it and 'mothball' it in my brother in law's barn hoping that one day in the future this model may become a collectors item. (forlorn hope)?
Toyota Celica GT 2.0 1991 Standard FWD UK Spec with 109K and a FSH from new - book fully stamped. I have owned the car for 7 years and I am the 3rd owner. All 3 owners 'mature - ie not boy racers.
From 70k I have changed the oil myself every 3000 miles on top of the regular services. MoTs going back 8 yrs.
I believe this is the Mark 4 model being the rounded shape with pop up headlights. The tyres are Firestones and only about 30% worn.
Colour Red, which after 14 years has faded a bit but regular polishing keeps this in order. No dents - a few stone chips but pretty good for a 14yr old. Interior good - on very small worn path on drivers seat side.
The car drives straight and true with no rattles. The engine purrs and has never missed a beat and the gearbox is smooth.
I realise it's not worth much - worth more as car, if you know what I mean. However, it is a very nice and well engineered sports coupe so I don't want to 'give it away'.
I don't actually need the cash from this car to get my son on road and it does seem feasable that pop up lights cars may be sought after IDC. So as said laying it up could be a good future investment.
Any thoughts on what I should do, keep or sell and if selling, a realistic price to expect.

I wouldn't like to bet on that one....
Yep, he'd love that but I think A 17 year old male driving a 170bhp 140mph sports car might be tempting fate a bit.
Hope guys can help out ...
Last night all 4 windows on my 2004 A4 TDi opened approx. 3 inches by themselves ... and then it pelted rain all night long. 'Twas a very soggy journey to work this morning - my pants have not felt like this since I was a very small boy.
3 questions I hope you guys can help with:
- Any ideas on how to rectify the phantom windows?
- How should I dry the inside of the car out? I was think of running the air con at full tilt and hot with the engine on for a while. Windows up or down?
- Anything special I should do with the leather seats?
Thanks for reading - any ideas you have would be very welcome indeed.

Leather seats to go, then.
Make sure that they are dry.
Clean with Autoglym leather cleaner.
Treat with Autoglym leather care cream.
If they really were soaked, re-treat with the care cream.
There are other good manufacturers of leather care products, but I've used Autoglym with good results.

Having recently written off my much loved Xantia TD Estate (raining cats n dogs, wet leaves etc)I've taken the plunge and spent my hard-earned on a used 2.2 dci X-Trail,mainly due to the positive comments from this forum. One of the few drawbacks I've noted are that the interior/seats mark easily.Given I have the obligatory two kids and dog to haul around can anyone recommend any decent fitting car seat covers? I'm after a set that are tailored to fit properly and can accomodate the side air bags.....

Doesn't seem too bad a price either

I am a little confused here!A fault on the throttle actuator will not cause a fault on the coolant light.Fault code P1559 may be an historic problem that may have occurred ages ago & not related to your current problem. If the car drives & idles ok get the garage to clean out throttle housing & reset idle adaption. The coolant warning lamp may indicate a water level or temp sensor fault.Btw a throttle actuator is about £300.
