Anyone any idea how many vehicles are damaged from falling rockets on 5/11? Anyone ever suffered damage to vehicles from same?

I would imagine that a thick cardboard tube with a stick attached would make a bit of a ding after falling......what.....a couple of hundred feet?

i bet plenty get damaged, 2 years ago i found a hefty looking rocket 2 feet behind my car...they even have pointed plastic nose cones on em too :(

the big ones crack roof tiles these days as well.

Neighbours on the other side of the road have just launched WW3 with rockets that wouldn't disgrace a professional display; huge altitude and enormous bangs that have rattled the windows. The other fireworks currently going off in their droves are drowned in to submission!

Thank heavens the two cars are in the garage, though as RF mentions too, I wondered about roof tiles!

Thank heavens also that at least they set them off at 18:00 this year, not 01:30 like last year (and like another neighbour despite the new law this year)

I love fireworks and always have done, but today's trend of wall-to-wall fireworks night after night for several weeks before November 5 and almost as long afterwards, plus birthdays and other social occasions, has really got beyond a joke.

The effect on the majority of animals and keeping young children awake after they have gone to bed is almost impossible to calculate, but can be regarded as being very considerable.

It would not be so bad but for the sheer volume of the bangs of today's fireworks - but I suppose they would lost their appeal for those setting them off if these were reduced or, better still, eliminated...:-)

Never thought about rockets etc damging cars or property though I have always thought that it is ludicrous that you can be prosecuted for dropping a sweet wrapper on the pavement however if it is attached to a cardboard tube, a foot of wood and 50g or so of gunpowder you can do what you like with it.
Rocket damage 5/11 - Stuartli
>>ludicrous that you can be prosecuted for dropping a sweet wrapper on the pavement>>

Applies equally, for instance, to comparing the noise of a faulty car exhaust with a firework "bang" or even causing air pollution in a smoke-free zone.

Just realised how this reads out of context, to be clear, I think it is correct that you can be prosecuted for dropping litter, it is the appparent exemption that fireworks have that is farcical.

I love fireworks.

Private fireworks that is, not public, council fireworks that they will not let me park anywhere near, although I pay for them.*

If I live, I'm going to have some of my own next year, excuse or no excuse - or perhaps better this New Year.

*we have quite a good view from our terrace, and a garage behind, and we'll be taxed for that too if Prescott gets his way; allowing that his friends (?!) up here will doubtless take the hint, if not actually putting the boot in first as with some other things.

No damage, but we have a big stick at least a metre long in the garden stuck in our garden. It's sticking out of the grass vertically. Both the remains of the rocket, and stick are stuck into the grass. The stick is fairly pointed, but the rocket isn't, so there must have been a fair amount of force for both to go into the ground.

Imagine that landing on a soft car roof, or worse still, on somebodies head (maybe a childs head). I've always been petrified of them, and these things don't help. Especially when there's a local person who likes to let off a REALLY loud one occassionally (just randomly) in the early hours of the morning, I don't get back to sleep and I feel terrible for days.

I hate fireworks and think the whole bonfire night thing is rediculous but I wouldn't want it banned.

Alcohol causes more deaths, injuries, nuisance, damage to cars and physical abuse and law breaking in general than fireworks ever will but hands up those who want alcohol banned?

Live and let live.

Sure, I'll be upset if my car is damaged but let's keep things in perpective.

You don't live in Sydenham (South London) do you P3t3r? We were staying in a friend's flat there back along and were woken about 3am by the most incredible explosion. I expected the street to fill with blue lights and two-tones but...nothing.
Been wondering about it ever since.

A few years ago a dear relative of mine had her MK II diesel golf badly damaged by a firework from the local council display. She was a council employee and the car was repaired under their insurance - she was also parked on their propery. I understood the government (!) were supposed to be legislating for "out of hours" firework displays. Weve had stuff going off at all hours for a week now - Diwalhi, Eid and Guy Fawkes night are supposed to be separated by several days.....

Not only cars, roof tiles and green houses. Perhaps Kew Gardens could say if they have a problem with this. But then Richmond might not be a place where you get hordes of rockets in this week.

The anomally pointed out by Cheddar is valid, why is illegal to litter but not when the litter is first fired up to 500ft? Is there a minimum height limit, say 30feet below which it is classed as litter and above it is classed as acceptable firework litter. So if I have an empty beercan, if I throw it up to 30 feet it should be ok? (this is obviously tongue in cheek).

And loud exhausts pointed out by someone else is equally valid. It really is about time fireworks were not for sale to general public. The general public in their masses, abuse the freedom they have been given. There is no way that any resulting smuggling of fireworks into the country would ever have any significant detriment to our peaceful life which would result from these things being banned.

It bloomin' well isn't. Picture the scene..... Ca$hless one is sat by the fire with friend's trained springer at his feet. Firework goes off, and said springer thinks it's pheasant nabbing time and demands to have his legs walked off him. Which with a springer is not a task to be undertaken lightly.

Sorry yes you are right I forgot. With a lab a walk is "too the foodbowl and back"

oh god, do you lot need to get out more.

Its once a year, it is at worst mildly annoying, it brings amusement to many, and none of my cars, houses, dogs or women have even been damaged by a falling rocket.

For goodness sakes, do you worry about rabbits choking on christmas wrapping paper as well ?

All of this going on and you're all worried about how it might be unfair on the litter rules.

Rocket damage 5/11 - volvoman
More annoying and worrying to me is the growing trend (around here at least) for kids to buy eggs and deliberately chuck them at passing cars in the name of 'trick or treat'.

Not as worrying as what I did to the last little git that threw something at my car....... Wonder if he ever bothered to try and get his trainers out of the tree I threw them into? Like a goucho with is bolas.

Mind you, that was nearly 15 years ago. I'm sure if I did it now I would find myself bundled to the floor by the local SWAT team and remanded at her maj's pleasure whilst the little scrote was sent for counselling in Antigua.

That happens? Blimey that will please the lab, no need to chase its dinner.

Once a year lol.

5/11, 25/12, 01/01, plus everybodies birthdays etc., and a couple of weeks either side of these dates. They can be heard at ANY time of the year, but it's mostly only when it's dark.

I have seen many today, and 5/11 was a couple of days ago.
Rocket damage 5/11 - $till $kint
Yours comes back? I'm impressed. Most labs I know just walk there, finish the bowl and then sit there giving their best impression of a poor, starving waif. I've even seen one trying to tuck it's tummy in.

Back on topic, I agree that the whole fireworks thing has gone beyond a joke. For the past 10 days, and no doubt for the next 10, it's a race to get home and close the catflap each evening before the first salvo from the local siege of Sarajevo re-enactment society. And what the hell is the big idea firing off rockets in broad daylight? I've yet to find firework debris on the car (more likely to get damaged by falling apples at our place) but the garden often features a spent rocket or 6.

And then I remember back to a few of my pranks from my younger years (albeit they were well after lighting up time) and go back to my book and a glass of Laphroig, giving the fire a prod and turning up the volume on the Arcam.
