Let's suppose I have recently bought a car, waiting for the new V5 to arrive in the post, but in the meantime, I want to drive to France for the weekend.

Do I need a full V5 document when driving to Europe? Read more

I drove an Audi A4 back from Malaga in the summer for my girlfriends dad, stopped on the French/Spanish border and had car searched with Sniffer dogs etc (i guess 2 young blokes in an audi, coming from Malaga might look a bit suspect!). Then again at the first toll stop (the french policeman was more worried about me driving in flip flops than anything else!)Asked to provide documents both times. The car was exported 4yrs ago and the V5 went AWOL somewhere between Preston and Spain, so all i had was the green part from when the car was originally purchased. It was insured under his company fleet policy (so my name did not appear on anything relating directly to the car-stupid with hind sight!) Somehow mangaged to blag our way out of it though, and stuck to speed limits etc religiously all the way through France! They can be pretty intimidating, so i would reccommend having all the required docs readily available!!

Hi Folks,

I have an intermittent poor throttle response with my vehicle, a Citroen Xsara HDi. Apologies for the long post but I'd really like to hear from anyone that had experienced a similar problem.

The symptoms are:

· The engine can fail to respond to a re opening of the throttle from closed for a period of 1 to 5 seconds. This is particularly happen when reapplying throttle when coming out of a bend or roundabout.

· It does not matter if the throttle application is light or heavy

·But it is really bad in terms of its frequency and duration when the car has a trailer attached or has an internal load. In this case, the car just ?chugs? as if it?s just getting intermittent spurts of fuel.

·The revs level where this tends to happen most is around 1400 to 1800 r.p.m. It does not seem to matter if the engine is cold or warm.

·It also tends to happen for a much shorter time period, say 1 second, when reapplying throttle on open road, say after coasting downhill and re opening the throttle to overtake. This can occur at any r.p.m.

·The problem also can manifest itself when trying to pull away from a standstill from a junction. In this case, the engine is way down on power and is very slow to respond to the throttle.

·The problem never happens when increasing the throttle opening from an already open position.

·Its possible to drive the car for, say, 5 miles, with hardly any evidence of the problem. But driving the same distance on another occasion could see the problem reoccurring a few times. It really does depend on the road type in terms of whether throttle re openings are a common occurrence. Apart from that it?s random except that the only time it occurs is with a throttle re opening.

·In all cases, it?s like as if the engine electronics is failing to recognise a change of load and is very slow to change from a lean mixture to a richer mixture. Once the engine gets fuel, then it?s away as normal. My understanding is that Hdi engines have an ?overrun? valve that reduces the fuel to the engine when the engine load is low. Am I right?

When the problem happens, the engine management light on the dashboard remains off. The vehicle was checked three times by a Citroen garage but no error codes are being logged .

One other thing is that the cars overall performance in terms of acceleration seems to be down slightly.

At this stage, I've lost all confidence with the Citroen dealer and my patience is rapidly running out with the national importer. Nothing has been done in the last three months other than check the diagnostics.

All ideas are most welcome Read more

Recently had a customer with this same problem, no throttle response for up to five seconds more evident after hard cornering, after exhaustive testing i sourced the fault to a miss adjusted brake pedal switch, customer had spent alot of money previously and had been told ecu fault, 'fly by wire' throttle housing, egr valve etc etc.

The brake switch cuts throttle action when depressed hence being miss adjusted a signal was being sent to the ecu telling it both the throttle and brake were being pressed together, with this information the ecu cuts throttle opening. It appears this is a common problem that is costing customers hundreds of pounds when a quick adjustment is all the is needed, even a new switch is only £8.00....

I?ve just fitted Bosch Super Plus wiper blades (set 22/19S as stated in Bosch?s selection chart) to my 03/03 Focus and so far I am not impressed.
Firstly, I had to cut 5mm off the inner end of both rubbers to stop them fouling one another in the parked position. (And yes, they are fitted correctly ~ they only fit one way.) Fortunately the length of the metal inner stiffener allowed for this without me having to cut the stiffener itself. No such problems with the original blades or with Halfords?s own brand.
Secondly, the method of retention of the rubber is iffy to say the least ~ just two metal tags (one each side of the rubber) crimped together near the outer end of the rubber.
Thirdly, the finish generally was very poor ~ sharp edges on all the metal parts. It was only the fact that I would have broken through the protective coating that stopped me from deburring the metal parts with a fine file.
I?m beginning to think that I should have saved myself £2.50 by buying Halfords?s own brand again.
I just hope that the performance and durability of the Bosch blades live up to the claims on the box.
Until I?m happy that I can trust the Bosch blades not to come adrift I?m going to carry those that I took off in the boot.

Yep, its the only brand mentioned in the thread title so I assumed (wrongly) that everyone would know which ones I meant. 8-)

New wipers of any brand will be better than old worn out wipers, but some new ones work better than other new ones.

The Bosch Super Plus that I put on my car yesterday work better than other Bosch wipers (non-Super)that I have tried in the past.

It appreciate the backroom's opinion on this one.

I usually do the school run by cycle, but occasionally use the car. The school is in a residential road (detatched houses) so the pick up involves parking outside the houses. There rare usually enough free spaces on the road, between each drive, but it I'm one of the last to arrive I'll park (still on the road) right outside one of the drives (drop kerb).

I would NEVER get out and leave the car, and would immediately drive off if I ever saw someone wanted to enter of exit their drive, so in effect I'm not causing an obstruction.

But is what I am doing illegal? I ask as I had an angry confrontation with someone else who complained that I was blocking not theirs, but their neighbours drive.

I can completely understand that someone would be annoyed if people parked and left the car, but I explained that I wasn't leaving it, and don't appreciate someone banging on my car.

No parking restrictions on this road.

Cheers. Read more

These are used in my town but rarely have much effect on the school run brigade as several of my friends who live close to schools will testify.

It often brings tears to their eyes, especially if they are late for work...:-)

I have a problem in which the washer jets do not work. When I activate them I can hear the motor whirring a way but nothing comes out of any of them (even the rear one). For a while, they kind of half worked in that when first activated, a little squirt would come out but after that nothing. Now, they seem to be completely dead.

Oh, and before anybody says, yes I have checked that there is enough fluid in the water bottle! :-)

Does anybody have any ideas what might be wrong? Over the summer, I had quite a high proportion of washer fluid to water and I'm wondering if it's all just got a bit gunked up, having not been used much over the summer? Is that likely? If so, what's the best thing to do about it?

Many thanks for your time,

~James

problem solved. As I suspected, the screen wash fluid that had been in there all summer had started to congeal into a sludge at the bottom of the tank, blocking the filter. The solution I used was to siphon the fluid out as best I could (with the siphoning sucking up some of the sludge too) and repeat the process by filling with hot water a couple of times. Many thanks for all your replies - I'm just glad I managed to sort it out cheaply and relatively hassle free :-)

hiya i am after having an oil change on my bmw X5 3.0litre 2001,just usual spark plugs air filter oil filter and oil.i normally get my bmw parts from euro parts or german and swedish.being i bit of a tight wad!!! :)anyway getin to the point, the mechanic where i usually take my car has said it would be fine with semi synthetic 10w/40. and thats what he would put in if i just dropped it off and didnt give him any parts,i understand hes not a bmw mechnic, but hes been in the job for nearly 20 years.when i went to g+s they recommended i get the fully synthetic 0w/30 and they dont do this, best they have is 5w/40.they said its not worth risking an engine for the sake of 50 quid and said i was best to go to bmw and get what they would use which i think would be the 0w/30 castrol edge.euro parts said it would be fine with there oil which is fully synthetic 0w/40,so i just need someones advise on the the oil situation, do i stop being a tight wad and fork out nearly 100 quid in oil from bmw, or get the 0w/40 from euro parts.it just seems every person in the motor trade has different advise on oil.thank you for any advise you could give me on this matter ,michael Read more

Oilman, Castrol, BMW and I recommend 0W-30.
So the best bet is to get some 20W- 50 from
B&Q.

OK, I just took the trouble to check my BMW discs on this one. The recommendation from BMW for a 2001 MY 30 6S3 engine is:

Cold climate: 5W-30. Moderate climate 10W-40. Hot climate: 15W-40. API SG.
I would say that UK is 'moderate climate'.

As I said further up, a synth 5W-40 API SL would be a reasonable choice, with winter coming up.

What car tv advert do you remember most? Is it the Mini Metros being driven off the boats at the South coast? The Fiat Strada being built by robots? Volvos being driven through windows by crash test dummies or the Citreon BX being eaten by a mechanical Grace Jones?

Yes the COG advert by Honda is my favourite too, it took a long time to make because it wasn't faked or done with CGI - very clever!

I have had two CDI Sprinters, a 311 and a 313. Both have suffered the same fault. The first was standing for a few months awaiting an engine change. The steering was perfect before and when collected it was very variable and lumpy. It would be light for a while and then going extremely heavy. I replaced the pump, still the same and then replaced the power steering rack which solved the problem. Now my current Sprinter was standing for a few months as well, in similar excellent working order before and now going variably heavy and light. Could anyone advise me why this may be happening and if there could be a cheaper solution than replacing the rack? Regards, Michael Read more

I can't see why you should need to change the rack. I suspect somehow moisture has got into the system.
