Hyundai are bringing back the Amica, I can't understand why they are doing this as its the same car with a different front. It wasn't a great car when it came out and things have moved on a lot recently with small cars, a move to ruin a brand if ever I saw one.

i understand part of that (the toyota bit anyway)and agree with you, i just wish that you could source bearings for hundies from bearing shops, rather than the expensive dealers only.

One should really release bleed nipple first to prevent back flow of fluid from triggering or damaging ABS unit or causing ABS self diagnostic system from thinking there is a fault/fluid loss.
Even if ignition is off, back flow can force internal pressure switches/solenoid valves within the ABS unit and throw up warning lights.

Does the turbocharger on my diesel car spin under exhaust gas pressure all the time the engine is running or just when the engine speed/gas pressure exceeds some value? Read more

Also on my list is the Audi 80 Cabriolet same as princess Di's
Basic quetion what should i look for on either model ie where do they rust and any mechanical weak spots.

A car that is a write-off need not necessarily be dangerous if put back on the road.

For example Car worth £500 is bashed on 2 o/s doors and front wing panel damage (nothing structural) - if cost of new parts & labour >£500 then the car will be written off by the ins co.

You buy it from Ins Co for £200. If you then source 2 x secondhand doors and a wing - assume you separately get them fitted for £200

Assuming the car is repaired to s satifactory standard there should be no difference in servicing, repairs or insurance.

Cat D is damaged and repairable but may not be economic for an ins co to pay for new parts & garage labour to fix it.

I know of an old battered Fiat that has been written off 3 times in 18 mths - people have run up the back 2x and on the side x1. The back end is still bashed and a scrappy provided a "new door" - not quite the same colour but a door - the car still runs OK and takes the school janitor to work. At £300/400 a time it is budget motoring - he still has the car and is about £1000 to the good after paying for a 2nd hand door.

I have a P reg mondeo TD 1.8

I have not owned a diesel car before and I am going to change the oil. What diesel oil should I get for this time of year.

Normal, part Synthetic or fully Synthetic?

Can some also tell me what the difference is and does changing it do any damage to the engine?

Cheers Read more

A Passat 130 PDI takes 4 litres of expensive oil, and is supposed to last about 18000 miles if you are brave/daft enough.

I came into Bristol on the M32 this morning and to my surprise a workman was not only washing the traffic cones, he gave them a polish with a clean rag. Nice to see someone with pride in their work. Read more

Happy Blue!

Shrubs would probably not grow over the barriers as they would get knocked by the vehicles. Ever see the shape of trees on a main road? - they take on the shape of the highest bus that drives past!

Also, shrubs would cushion an accident better than metal railings.

The Ring

Hi all,

Was wondering if someone could give me some pointers in what I do when i want to swap my private number plate from my old car to my new one. The old car im still keeping aswell so that needs its old registration put back and then obviosuly place the private plate on the new car. I have no idea what forms or where i may need to go to start this process, any help would be great.

Thanks Read more

I want to know what is the best family sized hatchback (baby on the way) that I can get for £6K. I intend to keep it for several years and it must be a commuter workhorse as well (motorway). I don't want to commute in the Leon 20vT (30mpg!) and as the wife likes driving it I need something else.

Priorities are:
New as possible for the money (i.e don't care about badge.)
Comfortable,
reliable,
Big Boot,
economical,
cheap to run and insure (if this is possible!)

The two leading candidates in my mind at the moment are the ubiquitous Mondeo TDCi, and the Primera 2.2DCi. If anyone has experience of both these cars and can contrast, or knows of an alternative then please fire away.

Left field it certainly is.

I realise that the Jazz is brilliantly packaged and all that but is it really any good as a commuter car/motorway muncher when compared to a Mondeo/Vectra sized car? I thought the hard ride that was associated with these might be to its detriment? Also, does it really have the same space as a Mondeo/Vectra? Finally I thought the smaller engine would make for a frenetic rather than relaxed motorway car.

I fully accept I could be wrong in all my assumptions. I will investigate!
