I'm considering purchasing sat nav, but I will be honest I know nothing about the different types available, its all foreign to me! It seems companies everywhere are offering sat nav for what seems a reasonable price. But I dont want to spend £200+ and find out I have bought a poor choice. My budget is £250 max can anybody offer me some advice (i'm sure lots of people on here can!) and remember keep it simple (sat nav for idiots!)

Thanks in advance

Rich

p.s my car is a 2005 Ford Ka if that has any bearing on what sat nav system i can or can't have. Read more

Hmmm-having looked into these cheaper Garmins they are not the same spec as the one I got from Maplins,no POI,favouites or ability to import speed camera database. No mention of a USB cable either(which will be why mine has 'bonus cable enclosed' on the bag)so no way to update the firmware to get these features.
The Navman cannot be connected to a PC either.

Just completing the change of keeper bit of the V5 and I am not sure what they mean by "Driver Number" of the new keeper. If I had to guess, I would think they are after the License Number, the combination surname/number (section 5 of pic license), but I am not sure.

Any ideas?.

Thanks Read more

"Or the V5 form designer looked at "Driver License Number" and couldnt fit it in so shortened it to 'driver number'...sillyer things have happened."

Heavens forbid V5 form designer walk down the hall to where the Driver License format designer sits and ask what they shortened it to, in this case "License Number".

If I contacted the DVLA and suggested they use "DL Number", think they would give me a top management position?.

Hi,

I'm a novice when it comes to changing spark plugs, so apologies for this very basic question.

I bought a set of Champion RC97CC plugs as recommended in the manual. When I got home I removed the leads form the old plugs but I can't see where the old plug is or how I can access it.

When I remove the lead all I can see is a hard black piece of raised plastic with a piece of metal in the middle (part of the spark plug?). The plastic doesn't appear to twist off and I can't see how I would be able to use a 5/8" spanner to remove the plug.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

i have just put a new set of leads on my 1997 306 miami tu engine and looked at the underside of the old leads and seen to my shock that the longest lead which is number #4 fits only in lenght to where you say #1 is? #1 with my old leads is the shortest and is closest to the dis unit.

with my leads laid out the firing order goes like this with #4 being cam belt end whilst looking left with engine in front of me....

Following on from the discussion in Vol 38:

I now discover that the TSRGD regs I thought I was looking at were, in fact, proposed amendments (presumably not yet ratified) so perhaps the actual rules are more or less the opposite.

I read: "The provision for signs with a red or black border to have a white edge has been deleted since yellow backing boards have been shown to be much more effective in isolating a traffic sign from its background and improving conspicuity."

Does this mean that yellow backing boards are not yet allowed? What was the 'Tonight' programme's argument based on? I didn't see it, unfortunately, and the ITV website is less than informative...

Any informed comment much appreciated! Read more

I am having puzzling probles with my Sony Freeview box (hereafter called FVB). Here are the pertinant facts.
With aerial connected to FVB and FVB to TV: I cannot receive any of the ITV or C4 channels on digital. BBC C5 etc all OK. The picture quality when switched to analogue is awful: loads of snow and no sound.
Connect aerial directly to TV: all analogue channels received perfectly.
I have done the usual things: unplug FVB and leave 20 minutes - no difference. I have rescanned for the channel changes and in fact after every 'test' I do I rescan.

I am sure the aerial is OK - after all, without the FVB I get good pictures.

These problems started the day we had a terrific storm in our village. We also lost the ADSL connection to the internet that night.

Any one got any bright ideas about what I can do to sort this out before heading out to buy a new FVB? Read more

My question is: how can the Stock Market move sideways!

It's a strange term but it's describing a financial market that is always on the move but ultimately not going anywhere.

Hi, Does anyone know of other people that have been in my currant situation? I wrote my car off on the way to work one morning, slid my rear wheel drive MG TF round an island and backed into a lampost.
Brief details:
My insurance is fully comp,
i bought the car 9 months earlier with MOT certs etc,
2000 reg (W)it had done 40k when purchased have only done 5k miles since.
The insurers wont pay up they said the independant assessors report states the back tyres have zero tread and caused the accident.
My argument is when i bought the car the front tyres were brand new and the back tyres read 5mm tread, now they are saying the front read 7mm the back zero?????? Does this sound right?
Can they refuse to pay up? Under the clause that it is my responsability to ensure the car is roadworthy and i was in breech of this? Does an MOT not mean your car is roadworthy? Read more

The F1 gsd2 is now really only supplied to the low volume sizes.where it was not worth Goodyear making the mould changes. the only sizes listed by Goodyear are as follows. 185/55v15 185/60v14 195/45w16 195/55v15 205/45w16 215/40w16 215/45y17 225/60w15 and 265/40z17. of these only sizes 1 2 4 8 & 9 are uniquely gsd2. technically goodyear do not list the MGF fitment but it is still available to order. How long this will remain Goodyear will not yet confirm.

Hello,

I have got an FTP folder set up on a machine running Windows Server 2003 Std, I want to set up sub folders for external users and password them so external users can only access their own sub folder. At the moment I can access the FTP myself via ftp://192.XXX.XXX.XXX from any browser on any internet enabled PC however I am using the administrator password to do so.

I am trying to set alternative passwords (i.e. alternative to the administrator password) for sub folders within the FTP folder allowing users access to their own FTP sub folder only.

Any ideas as to how I can password sub folder and allow more than read-only access to users without gving them privileges that allow them to access other sub folders?

Many thanks.

No problem. Your noise *might* be some kind of interference across the bus - I am guessing wildly here - but I have some low background noise on output and occasional spikes of "white noise" (I think it's called) which someone once told me are probably as a result of this. Possibly another card chucking out some whatsits. Quite what causes it I neither know nor care! :-)

Glad to be of help!

I own a golf mk3 1997 1.4. Bought it two years ago and its done 66k miles. On Monday I drove it about haf a mile pulled over and the engine died. Got a local garage to come out and have a look. After the usual checks (plugs, leads, dist & cap etc etc) they traced the problem - they said - to a faulty coil as there was no spark and replaced it. Unfortunately this didn't cure the problem so they took it to a specialist who put it on two diagnosis machines both of which showed no power coming out of the ECU. After looking at several sites it appears that there is a long running problem with the ECU power supply relay. Ah Ha I thought replace that and Bob's your uncle! Nope - still dead.

Does this mean I am looking at a new ECU? Or does somebody out there have any other ideas?

By the way my local VW dealer was useless. Couldn't even tell me which relay was the one to replace "It's in the fusebox somewhere" and told me they don't keep spares in stock for older cars. That makes a lot of sense because the older ones never need spares do they? Must be all those new ones they sell which break down. Read more

"HI, I checked the terminals last night - I can measure a current at the two outer terminals but it is only reading 6-8 volts on the multimeter. Is this normal or might it point to another problem?"

Mat_Green_Omega

Hi my name is Matt and I have a 1994 Vauxhall Omega 2.0 16v Automatic Saloon Green Car. It has a very high mileage (121,000) but is still going like a tank. My friends call it 'The Beast'. I like to call it 'The Tank'.

It has a snow button, which I personally have never used. Has anyone actaully used this James Bond style device in the Snow?

A friend of mine used it and apprantley it's like being in a 4x4 as long as you drive slow and carefull in the snow. One press of the 'Snow Button' (located by the Autobox) makes all the difference in the world. I think it works by making the car move off slowly in 3rd gear? I am unsure as how well it will work with my 17inch alloys with wide tyres.

That's of course if there is any snow this Winter to contend with hmm............... Read more

Well - there is that!

I wouldn't like to try out a quote putting in one of those offence codes - over on PePiPoo they reckon it's quite severe. As is failing to name the driver which I think, is an MS90 code.

Surely if you're the type of person to drive around uninsured, when you've been caught, you're unlikely to get insurance - much less when you realise how much your premiums will be loaded by.
