I saw an advert for some wheel trims that are intended to give your car the low-profile alloy look at a fraction of the cost of the real things. The ad explained that these trims were suitable for fitting to steel or ALLOY wheels!

One particlarly 'elegant' set of five-spoke trims even had fake ventilated brake discs behind the spokes! Anyone know where I can get a cheap Nova? (!!!)

Peugeot 406 auto, 100k miles

I?ve never been convinced by the gear change on my 406, it doesn?t slam instantaneously into the next gear like all my other autos have - sometimes it?s as slow as changing manually and kind of revs inbetween changes. The down -shift is fine, it?s only while shifting up. Sometimes it changes up - down - up in quick succession as if it?s not sure what to do. It never feels like it?ll let me down, it?s just "not right".

I?m taking it to be prepared for winter on Friday (winter tyres, oil, antifreeze, mini service etc), should I have the transmission fluid changed at the same time? I saw Ed China and Mike Brewer cure a dicky Range Rover gearbox by simply doing this. And how often should I be changing gearbox oil? If it?s not a simple fix, I?ll just live with it...

Thanks as always, Dave. Read more

Changing the fluid should always be the first, cheap, task when investigating a misbehaving autobox.

Check the colour of the oil on the dipstick (assumimg there is one!). If it's red it's ok. If it's reddy-brown, thats normal ageing. If it's dark brown it needs changing. If it's black, the box may soon need a rebuild.

A number of manufacturers state clearly that their gearboxes NEVER need an oil change, manual or auto, except in "arduous" conditions. I change mine once a year, at a cost in ATF of £9, just for peace of mind.

I have a 97 Nissan Primera.
The wipers stall during intermittent operation and if I want a single sweep I have to keep the stalk pushed up until the wipers park again. If the windscreen wash is used the wipers sometimes keep going until the ignition is switched off.

Is there a hidden relay or is it built into the motor assy?
There is no mention of a relay in the Haynes manual. Only a 'Front Wiper Amplifier'?

Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Ian

Hi all,

I'm new here, and getting a but frustrated!!

I have an R reg Ford Escort Flight 1.6. The main problem is that the Dash Board lights don't always come on and upon further investigation i found out that this means that rear lights/Fog lights wont work either.

I had this problem a couple of months ago and apprently it is known problem on Escorts in that the contact for the stalk burns out. However replaced it with a new one and its doing it again!!

So before i go out and spend more money on a new one, i was wondering is anyone here that may know if it is anything else other that the contact in the stalk burning out.....

The second problem, may be something small i don't know.. but when the car is idle the rev's are really high, or when i've come off the motorway the rev's are really high. I don't know if this is a prob or not really!!

Thanks in advance! Read more

Getting new unit tomorrow.... Genuine Ford!!

Thanks for the help guys! :)

Another question, how easy is it to take a Ford Escort (same car) stereo out?

Its just i bought a Fiesta (S Reg, 1.3 Encore) for my wife today, and it had a CD Player (Kenwood) in it, but she's not fussed on it, so i want it, so i thought take the stereo out of mine put it in hers and then i get the CD player!!

Why haven't manufacturers figured this one out yet.

How come on my Audi A3 I can't listen to talk sport/five live on MW and get my RDS Traffic Announcement to work at the same time? Why will it only work on FM? It would be a far better idea if the TA signal cut in whilst listening to any frequency. It does it when listening to CDs, assuming my last station was FM, so it must be capable of multi tasking - so why not on lowly Medium Wave.

I usually call vodaphone traffic before I set off to check which of the three alternative routes to go - and then rely on the RDS to update me on the move. Last week this cost me an hour waiting in an accident (5 car nose to tail shunt - noone hurt fortunately). My point is that I could have avoided this if I'd known. As soon as I tune back into FM - it tells me to avoid the area.

Also whilst I'm having a rant - how about displaying the radio station name so I can decide to turn the TA straight off if it's out of my area?

Or is it a case of operator error on my behalf???

Come on Audi - you should be better than this....

Cheers Read more

Last tuesday am, when the weather was at its worst, had one 'traffic announcment' from GMR that consisted solely of the England/Pakistan cricket score.

This morning, another from GMR that was just a report on Michael Vaughans injuries.
What's the point ?

I just read this on another forum;

tinyurl.com/7cnn4

Bearing in mind which paper it comes from, do you reckon there's any truth to it or is it just sensationalist rubbish?

Sensationalist truth. Particularly liked the bit about MBNA, who seem to have linked up with DVLA solely over issues with abuse of their Chester office car park, linked to the same firm's scattergun approach to credit card mailings.

A friend recently wanted a new number plate for his Landrover trailor. He went to a parts company with the log book but was told that he needed a photo driving licence, or a passport. As he did not have either, they said that a utility bill would do.

I thought a log book was the only thing that was necessary. Can anybody clear this up please? Read more

Thanks for the answers. I've looked at fancyplates, they seem good, and cheap too. Next time I want some plates I will go to them.

They are on my Favorites!

My immobiliser seems to occasionally think I'm forcing entry. It hapenned in December last year and now twice in the last two weeks.

I can get in using the remote control; the doors unlock; but then when you go to start the car with the key, the red and green lights on the mirror come on and the car won't start.

The only way round is to disconnect the car battery for TWO days. This then makes the car lose its settings and then it starts.

Andy Gayle said put some new batteries in the remote, which I've done, but the remote was indicating a full charge. I'm not sure if it'll happen again and if so, when.

For now, I'm locking the doors using the key, not the remote, in the hope that the immobiliser won't intrude as I've not armed it. Any other ideas? Is it the mirror (as this holds the sensor) that needs replacing?

Any help appreciated. Read more

Hi Rojer! I know it's a while ago but just found your blog re the problem with immobilisers and mirrors etc. I have just bought a W140 S320L, it went into the garage (purports to be an MB specialist) for a replacement steering box, when they went to test the car the car had immobilised itself and the lights on the rear view mirror are alternately flashing.
looks much like the same as your problem, did you manage to solve the problem? If so, can you pas on some info please?
Thanks
Peter

Thanks for the edit! I thought I might get away with the asterisks on this one occasion but only because of the conection to the great TV alpha-chef.

Clarkson, for all I know, might be a very good driver but on TV they're bound to show the boy-racer adrenaline clips.

Hello everyone.

I've been reading this forum and website for a while, and would like to thank everyone for all their comments; thoroughly enjoyable, and informative!

Now, I was wondering if somebody would be able to help me (I would like to start by admitting, I know nothing about cars, other than what this site has taught me!)

After a lot of reading through past threads and the car-by-car breakdown, I have just purchased a second hand Saab 9-5, from a private owner. I also have a "Cherished Registration Mark" on a retention certificate.

I was wondering, is there anyway that I can put the registration plate on the car, before bringing it home? (The car is already taxed and MOTed). I've found a website on the internet that can deliver the actual plates next day, so that's alright, it's just that I want to be legal,if I actually put the plates on the car.

Many thanks in advance to everyone. Read more

Superb comments, Thank you very much everyone.

I've got the car now, and as soon as I get the V5 will have the number transferred to the car.

Thank you all again.
