Hello everyone.
I've been reading this forum and website for a while, and would like to thank everyone for all their comments; thoroughly enjoyable, and informative!
Now, I was wondering if somebody would be able to help me (I would like to start by admitting, I know nothing about cars, other than what this site has taught me!)
After a lot of reading through past threads and the car-by-car breakdown, I have just purchased a second hand Saab 9-5, from a private owner. I also have a "Cherished Registration Mark" on a retention certificate.
I was wondering, is there anyway that I can put the registration plate on the car, before bringing it home? (The car is already taxed and MOTed). I've found a website on the internet that can deliver the actual plates next day, so that's alright, it's just that I want to be legal,if I actually put the plates on the car.
Many thanks in advance to everyone.

If it's going to be delivered with trade plates or on a low-loader flatbed, and parked off the road, then yes fine.
If you're going to drive it yourself, or keep it on a public road then no. You need to register it with DVLA first.
They sometimes make you keep the original number for a few days while they send the replacement tax disc out - particularly if they're busy when you go in (which they usually are).
Don't be tempted to do it - your insurance will be null and void, and the police will spank you for it if you're caught...

The only was is to get the current owner to transfer the plates before he sells it to you and then sells you the car with the new number on. Bad idea though.
Get the car, wait for log book to arrive, go to Licensing Office with retention cert and then drive to number plate shop and swap plates over.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

Good idea, but flawed :
(a) the retention certificate wouldn't have the sellers name on, so DVLA would refuse to apply it (ok, so you could pay an extra £25 to change names)
and
(b) they would keep the log book and would re-issue it to the seller 6 or 8 weeks down the line. also you're not supposed to sell the car until the replacement arrives.

you cant do plate swaps at the local dvla office any more you have to post the relevant paperwork in to your office with the original insurance document, the new disc usually comes back in 2 working days, you then get a letter of authority to get new number plates made up

Really??? Is this a new thing? I did one at my "local" office (Shrewsbury) about 6 weeks ago.
I did have to wait a couple of days for the paperwork back though, so that might explain why... I just assumed it was because they were busy.
Of course, it would be too much to expect the millions of pounds profit they make from cherished transfers each year to pay for a proper service wouldn't it... :-(

it came in at the beginning of the year.

Thank you everyone.
So I take it this means that I cannot put the plates on my car and drive home with them?
And I take it the quickest way of getting the plates on to my car is to go to a DVLA office (if such a service is still available?), or could anybody suggest a quicker way?
Thanks again so much to everyone.

I'd be very chary of involving a third party private seller in a transfer, better to process the deal on the standard plate and then d/w transfer once you have the V5
As for simplicity of process, we had a cherished plate on retention until April this year when SWMBO got her own Berlingo. Dealer was a bit sniffy about sorting out the paperwork so we drove off on the issued 05 plate.
As soon as the V5 arrived (very quick indeed) she took the car and all the papers down to Northampton VLO who processed the transfer there and then. Plates had to be swapped within (IIRC) 24 hours.

Are you sure? We changed the documents, tax disc etc on my son's car in the DVLA office in Reading at the end of January this year, got the authorising letter over the desk and got the plates made up the same day.

Suspect managers would like to close local offices and to that end have removed obligation to deal with callers there and then. Of course in the real world the public still expect the service and the staff endevour to go on providing it.

Superb comments, Thank you very much everyone.
I've got the car now, and as soon as I get the V5 will have the number transferred to the car.
Thank you all again.
