I think this article sums up that all levels of Government are anti car.

Unless all us motorists complain to politicians about our special interest in freedom of movement, we can only expect to pay through the nose in the future.

to me the movement of onions is not the problem it is that people do not like to share transport. I personally am 25 and have just got my first car because my new job means I have to be in different places from week to week and can not get a bus. this is the only reason i bought the car. when i am in the office i ride my bike and get a shower at work which save both time and money as no bus fare and no gym membership needed.
If those of you who work in the same office all the time and live on a bus route that might at this time take 10 mins longer got the bus the bus would be quicker as there is less traffic and the earth would last abit longer. I think the this kind of use of a car should be taxed even more and the hauliers less.
tax the lazy and inconsiderate.
everybody likes to blame the gov but if you cant afford it then you dont get it simple

I had my bangernomics Nova stolen on Friday and later recovered from the local ford. It will obviously be a write off but I'd like some advice regarding the payout as it was comprehensively insured. Ive done a site h but cannot find the topic so I apologise in advance.
The insurers have asked for the documents to be sent to them Do I compromise my position by sending them in advance of an agreed settlement? I also think I've seen a previous poster state that the insurers have to pay out to put you back in the position that you were in before the claim, rather than accept a strict valuation of your car. Has anyone tried this and succeeded? Finally should I cancel the balance of my policy, which expires in December as I sahll be using my other car for the foreseeable future? Would be grateful for any advice.

Somehow I doubt that whoever stole Archies' car and dumped it
in a Ford is going to come back with their insurance
details.....

Woe betides anyone who ever dumps anything in my Ford!

i am having bursts where the car jolts and power seems to be reduced then returns to normal. It mainly happens when just started the car. I think the sound deadening in the exhaust is comming out of the exhaust pipe and wondered if this would be the problem??????????????????????????????? Read more

Could be DD but rather think it would affect engine at all revs/Hot or cold.My guess would be faulty oxygen sensor..As I mentioned why replace part of the exhaust without proving its faulty..At least so far no explanation has been put forward..I am puzzled as to why??

SWMBO's 306 passed its MOT this morning, but I'd like to know what the comments written on the brakes portion of the check list mean.

My assumption is that the (L) refers to the point of wheel lock, but I don't know what the values themselves mean. I'm not surprised that there is some imbalance, because I fitted new discs and pads on Saturday, since when the car has been driven barely ten miles to bed them in!

Anyway, the values:

Nearside
180
240(L)
90
130(L)

Offside
190
310(L)
100
190(L)

Last year, for reference, the values were:

Nearside
280(L)
90
200(L)

Offside
300(L)
90
160(L)

I have had a look on various MOT related web sites, but can't find the answer.

Many thanks! Read more

Taken my new car to dealer for scheduled servicing 3 times now and each time they overfill the engine oil by at least an extra mark on the dipstick. Every time I tell them about it and they take some out, I'm getting cheesed off, they charge me a fortune for their time, isn't my time as valuable?

Does overfilling really make a difference or am I being picky?

It will also lead to increased oil consumption and burning of the oil during the combustion sequence, fouled plugs and increased emissions; the possibility of engine fires, whilst too much in the exhaust can damage the catalytic converter.

American research indicates that keeping the oil level at its maximum mark can increase consumption by up to four times compared with the low mark and will also prolong engine warm-up...:-)

150k miles on it, so I'm thinking an auxiliary belt (chain cam engine). The noise goes up & down as you rev the engine (sounds like an old fan-driven electric heater !), even when it's in neutral, so presumably engine, not transmission, related. Any ideas anyone ?! Read more

Don't mean to be patronising but a simpler solution may be the tightness of the fanbelt (drivebelt). My friend had this problem on a Fiesta. I suppose the bearings on the alternator will be destroyed anyway if you have driven it enough with it too tight.

I've just bought a brand new Audi A4 - and am unsure if I should 'run it in' for the first few hundred miles? I've never had a brand new car before and wasn't given any guidance from the dealership when picking up the car (admittedly I was far too excited to be thinking about asking sensible questions).

Can anyone tell me if you still need to do this with modern engines - I have spoken to a number of friends etc who all have differing opinions on whether or not to take it easy.

I've done 250 miles already keeping it below 3000 for the majority of the time - if I do need to run it in, how long should I do this for? Read more

I always read the manual so I know how to fix things my wife manages to activate or break whenever she sits in the car!

Can anybody help, I'm now desperate.
I have a Rover 75 2.0L v6 automatic on an X plate.
I originally was getting a horrible ammonia type smell when travelling 'remove this bit and replace with the @ symbol' speed with window open, then the engine blew the thermostat housing off, took to garage , told head gasket blown & warped head, and have fitted a secondhand engine with only 9,000 miles use. Brought back from garage and 100 miles on had exactly same smell, took back to garage and water bottle was full of oil. Had the oil coolant system cleaned and a new oil cooler fitted. Did 60 miles & smell re-appeared, back to garage, oil in coolant, coolant system flushed and had new seal fitted on oil cooler, did 60 miles, smell back, again oil in coolant. Also have had new radiator fitted. The coolant guage never goes above half way apart from when the thermostat housing was blown off on the original engine. Does anybody know what the problem might be, it's already cost me £1,500 plus the cost of the engine and I just seem to keep paying out to the garage. Read more

Where did you get the engine from?.It sounds like this engine is suffering the same problem

Before I hijack this site tonight, has anybody thought about being a Police Motorcyclist or wondered what it took?

Had a "Ride To Arrive" check ride today 1 PC Motorcyclist to 2 riders and it certainly improved my knowledge.

In the saddle for 3 1/2 hours with alternate stints leading, was it useful? Yes, was I getting as far left on the road prior to RH bends as the PC?

Did I learn anything? Lots. However, one thing that struck me was the speed that these boys are capable of going around corners in this case on a ST1100. Hats of to these fellas/girls.
Best Motorcyclists I have ever ridden with and I'm no slouch. Read more

Sadly Police Motorcyclists in Essex would be unable to undertake this sort of duty, the Essex Police motorcycle division was disbanded a few years back so we no longer have any.
I often wonder whether this, and the lack of them being able to give appropriate advice to bikers on the road, has anything to do with the still high and, I believe still increasing, death toll amongst the biking fraternity in Essex in accidents in which no other vehicle is involved.
From the remarks on this thread a lot of you who are experienced bikers have benefited greatly from this input so I believe my thoughts may have some grounds.

My 99v 1.0L polo has had starting problems for about a year now which the vw it appears are unable to fix. The car has done 57kmiles and for the first time it is started each day the engine needs to be turned over a great number of times and often the key needs to be turned off before trying again. When the engine does eventually start a great deal of blueish smoke comes out of the exhaust. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated. Read more

I would suggest getting the charge rate from alternator to battery checked out..It has been known for battery to turn starter. But not feed ECU and sensors.Discussion of which I have had several times.Though not here..I doubt worn valve guides or seals will give that much trouble unless severe
