Whining noise Corolla vvti - arnold2
150k miles on it, so I'm thinking an auxiliary belt (chain cam engine). The noise goes up & down as you rev the engine (sounds like an old fan-driven electric heater !), even when it's in neutral, so presumably engine, not transmission, related. Any ideas anyone ?!

Alternator bearings?
Whining noise Corolla vvti - arnold2
a thought - are they expensive ? Do you need to replace the whole alternator ?

You'll probably have to buy a new alternator, if it is the problem. Best thing to do is open the bonnet and find out exactly where the noise is coming from.

Almost certainly - well it is a Toyota!

Agreed, may well be the alternator. I had a similar noise with a corrolla and left it to get worse for a few years. When I did get the alternator replaced it did fix the noise and improved the fuel consumption a bit too.

You really only need the bearings replaced if the rest of the alternator is working OK. This place will likely be able to help (either with parts, or a new alternator if needed):

Or you could remove alternator belt and restart and see if noise has gone away!

Cheers guys - the odd thing is the noise keeps coming & going - but there is a lower-level high pitch 'whine', and also a quiet 'thump' when you turn the engine off ?

Don't mean to be patronising but a simpler solution may be the tightness of the fanbelt (drivebelt). My friend had this problem on a Fiesta. I suppose the bearings on the alternator will be destroyed anyway if you have driven it enough with it too tight.
