Question frontera alarm
welderjames

Does anyone know how to switch off/disconnect the immobiliser (red flasher key fob thingy)at the ignition switch, and also to switch off/disconnect the alarm,as i am getting fed up with the alarm going off when you forget to turn on ignition within the 15 seconds or so.Very annoying when loading the car.Thanks. Engine makes a loud buzzing sound at around 2800-3000 revs. Fine either side of that.

There's not much room in the engine. I can't follow where the noise is exactly coming from.

Is this likely to be a blowing manifold or just something which is rattling and needs tightening?

From PwC:

"Accountants Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) say they are "optimistic" because of "good assets and a great workforce"."

Er, what assets !

They don't own the land the factory is on (do they own the factory itself?), but lease it

They don't own any of their engines now

They don't own either the 25 or 75

The CitiRover is Indian, anyway

So that leaves the 45, the MG-TF and the XPower SV; and the MG name itself. And I believe BMW still owns the rights to the Rover name ?

So that would only leave any bidder MG, I suppose ... which is the best bit anyway ...

What ISN'T clear is if Longbridge could still sell the MG versions of the Rover 25 & 75 - although I believe the whole assembly line for the 25 has been sold to China ... Read more

Probably more interesting than your essay!

I have a 97 3 litre Camry auto due for a B service; which I have decided to do myself - servicing to date has been Toyota. Value of the car does not justify the £300+ bill any more.
There is no Haynes manual available so my questions are
1. where is the fuel filter and what is the replacement procedure
2. anything special to do with the coolant replacement

Thanks for the advice

There is a Haynes USA version. I think Amazon do it

Interesting thought for you all
if you have a diesel that is doing 50mpg over 4000 miles.
this will cost you £320 thats when diesel is at 87.9ppl

for a petrol that does 30mpg at 83.9ppl
its £508.80
only an extra £190 a month.

if you do 4000miles a month.

mmm, makes me think, i was basing my calcs on 81.9 ppl for diesel a year and 4 months ago. which was 81.9 so 4000 miles in a diesel doing 50mpg was only costing £295.00.
so in a year its costing me an extra £25 a month for fuel.
(well not me, my company.)

also over a year this is £2280.
if you can buy a petrol for £2K cheaper than a diesel, whats the point ??????????????????????????
and many people dont do 45K miles a year.

Start comparing in gear performance e.g. 30-50, 50-70 etc i.e the type of acceleration you use every day and diesels are cheaper. The 2.0TDi unit only produces 140 PS, but has 320 Nm torque. To get this torque out of a petrol you need the 3.2 V6. In gear performance is almost the same for these two vehicles. The 2.0 TDi can be had for £19k ish, the V6 is about £22k. V6 does 18.8 mpg urban cycle, TDi 38.1 mpg (>twice as many miles per gallon). Diesel retains more value after 3 years than the V6, insurance is cheaper, as is road tax!>>

My situation is :-

a) I applied to put my REG on retention, actually got a new REG and sold my car last week but am told it will be weeks before the new V5 arrives along with my retention certificate.

b) I bought a 'new' car yesterday. The owner had sent off his application to put his number on retention last week but nothing happened. After 2 days of trying to contact the DVLA he was told it would probably be May 4th before he got notification of his new reg. They could tell him when his V5 would arrive.

c) so I'm driving with his personal reg (worth more than the car).

d) I want to put my personal reg (still in limbo at the DVLA) on the car.

e) I will also need to tax it in a couple of months and have no confidence I'll have the V5 by then!

The DVLA just don't seem to have the staff to operate their organisation properly. It's not helped by the over-complicated systems in this country. It's far simpler in America.

Meanwhile, has anybody any suggestions what I can/should do in these circumstances. It would seem that if one stuck rigidly to the DVLA's guidelines then trading in cars would just about cease!

Thanks

Sorry to hear this.

In all my dealings with DVLA including when my father died and I had to get the car transferred in to my Uncle's name I found them fast efficient and unfailingly polite. I even asked one guy if it was really a government department as it worked so well.

Have a read, and see what you think, and learn!

Out in the car other week.

Come up to a roundabout and stop on left hand lane (i.e kerbside before the roundabout to let traffic on roundabout pass as I wanted to take the first exit of the roundabout)

Hear a bang as a car collides with my rear, so pull over to side off the roundabout and get out. My car seems to have suffered no damaged, with the front end of the other car dented (the other car went under my rear end). Out comes a elderly guy (late 80s), who is very apologetic and admits that he just couldnt stop in time. Due to the guys age and mobility, the main concern for all of us, was to get him on his way, rather than leave him stranded. Luckily, a neighbout provided assistance in arranging recovery of the other guys car which was immobile due to a damaged radiator.

As there was no apparant damaged to my vehicle at the time of the accident, no need for a claim from me, and clear liability it all seemed quite simple.

In actual fact on closer inspection there is damage to the rear bumper/mouldings, but not something that you would normally have repaired due to it being minor (misalignement rather than bent), but something that would come out with a £600+ bill from body shop.

I then get a letter from the other guys insurance who claims that my vehicle cut in front of his vehicle whilst on the roundabout, and that they consider that I am fully liable!

Write back, and tell then the facts as above (i.e their insured rear ended me after I had stopped) and that the other guy had admitted liability, and that the damaged was seen by a witness.

Their insurance writes back, and claims that they driver never admitted liability, and that I cut from the outside into the inside lane in front of their insured vehicle whilst on the roundabout! This is clearly ficticious, as I had stopped prior to entering the roundabout, when he rear ended me, and they are still persuing full costs!

In fact the damage to my rear end is on the left hand side and corner moulding of the bumper, which is the opposite side to where the damaged would have occured based on the other drivers claim!

In the event of any accident, it dont have any concern for the other driver! and make sure you look after your own back! A police report wouldnt be a bad idea no matter how small or simple the matter appears! Read more

If you record a witness without their knowledge/consent, is
it legal? (or aceptable to police, insurance etc?)

Interesting question. How does this work? Speaking for myself, I am always frustrated by SWMBO's (all women's?) apparent ability to remember conversations blow-by-blow ("I said ... then he said ... then I said ..."). A recording would at least help to get thoughts in order after a stressful experience.

Last week, it was falling in love with an MV Agusta Brutale, and coming within a hairs breadth of parting with my much loved Hornet.

This week it is taking advantage of working in Milwaukee during part of May to book a factory tour with Harley! Yes, Harley! I can't believe what I'm writing!

To use my wife's expression, I must have mashed potato for a brain as I enter middle age! ;-)

Seriously, although I have no designs to own one - not even the new Street Rod that I like the cosmetics of and hear good things about the dynamics of - I'm much looking forward to seeing what it's all about.

Hope the Easter ride out went well, and you got to the bottom of your tyre trouble.

THe Growler

Now that sounds good. Definitely get the lights hard-wired to the ignition. A US import should have that anyway?

I don't go for the Dressers either. My Softie is the standard one with lots added but only those things which contribute to performance or convenience: Performance Machine Brakes, Goodman Oil Cooler, Arlen Ness forward controls, Custom Chrome LED tail-lights etc. I did put a 150 tyre on the rear which is about as much rubber as you can add without major surgery to the frame and I lowered the suspension too. Makes it ride like a bear over traffic humps but it holds the road on the bends like it's glued.

When you get started you'll want to do all this stuff after you've got used to the bike, and the beauty of a Harley is you can make it exactly your own anyway you want it. I've owned several, from the Dyna to the Road King, but this one is the best I've had.

Growlette's Sporty is as you say, lighter, she's quite tiny but she can manage it in car parks etc. If I have any criticism it's that the rear shocks are a bit harsh. I guess that's fixable with aftermarket ones, we haven't got around to that yet. It's a bit small for me but that's just me.

You'll love it.

Question VR6 Thermostat
Meko

Got a 96 VR6 (Golf) and the thermostat light has started flashing on an off. It doesn't always start flashing and will stop if i turn the engine on and off, although recently it does it more often than not.
The temperature gauge still works ok just the light flashes.

Am i right in thinking it's just a sensor problem? and if so is it cheap and easy to do yourself? If not is it expensive, cos this car is doing my fruit in, something going wrong every payday.
