even I thought that the Rover jokes were offensive to the
6000 people who have lost their livlihood. Yes, we can
joke about auntie Rover.....at the right time.

HIGNFY is recorded on Thursday, the announcement from Rover wasn't made until Friday. Had it been the other way around, then *maybe* they wouldn't have cracked the odd joke or two. But then again HIGNFY has never been backward at coming forward with it's controversial comments.

I am about to order a new Transit Chassis Cab LWB with twin rear wheels to be made into a motorhome. There are 2 choices of rear axle ratio:- 3.77 and 4.27, each giving a different GTM. I have been told that one ratio would be better for towing and the other better for motorway travel. Can anyone advise me as to which ratio would be better for a motorhome and why? I am not planning on doing any towing. Thank you for any help you can give. Read more

Lower ratio 4.27 will give good acceleration, higher revs at cruise speed & proportionally greater fuel consumption.
Higher ratio 3.77 will give poorer acceleration, lower cruise RPM & better economy.
Assuming its for long distance cruising and you don't live in a very hilly region I'd go for the 3.77.
Probably worth asking around the Camper web sites.

i have a 2001 406 1.8ltr , when reversing it sometimes jumps out of gear i have been tol it could be the gear box on the way out can any one help ? .

Could be worn engine/gearbox mounts, allowing excessive movement and affecting the linkage. If it has synchro on reverse(most cars do not as you are not usually moving when engaging reverse)it would not affect it staying in gear. However a worn detent would.

Follow up to www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=2&t=30...6 , originally attributed to failure of the rubber metal pulley as in other threads.

I'm now being told the pulley was not the problem and that the rocker(s) failed spontaneously. Workshop manager asked if I'd "read about this" (suspect he was taking the wotsit as I admitted my reliance on internet fora questioning earlier advice).

Are rockers or any other part of the cam/valvegear a known weakness on this engine.

As ever all advice greatfully received. Read more

Aprilia

Can't see how a snapped rocker would cause the cambelt to fail - unless the debris somehow jammed the camshaft.

If it's true the batteries on a hybrid need replacement after 10 years and they cost £3000, that would be a problem. However, the replacement battery pack would be likely to outlast the car by several years. Maybe someone might step in and offer replacement batteries with a 4-5 year life, at a lower price. I don't know if this is technically feasable - any ideas?

I've been having trouble with my Astra 1.4 K reg (petrol) car when I first start the engine. It loses power and judders, then suddenly returns to normal power. When the car has been running for about 5 minutes everything is fine and the car runs normally. Any ideas what may be causing this? incidentally the choke has always been faulty since I purchased the car requiring me to keep on revving the engine until the engine runs normally without cutting out. Could the problems be related?

From your description, almost certainly related to choke.

Visiting the MG-Rover is a pretty sad (in the OED sense) experience.

Hi,
I need some advice about the Rover 25 Turbo Diesel...

I loaned one of these cars (W Reg) from my company - as I was planning to perhaps make them an offer for it - and it suffered a serious leak of an oil pipe external to the engine.

I had to get it fixed at a local garage and will have to claim back the costs from the company. I would like to know how to describe the component as I will need to justify why the car needed to be repaired "there and then" as the garage told me it was undriveable.

I have no idea what this pipe is for - pehaps the Turbocharger or oil cooler as I do not have any manuals.

See the following links for pics of the oild pipe and the new pipe in place.

I am now convinced it is an oil cooler pipe as it goes in and out of a small finned heat-exchnager thingy next to the radiator.

After that number of failures he should be restricted to shanks's

ordinarily I would agree, but if you read the details fo the story this is the theory test we're talking about, and he was unable to study or revise for it in any way. Some of the quotes imply that he basically took the test each time, and by doing so learnt the answer to one more question each time.
Mind you, it's hard to say without seeing the details of their test, but if as much of it is common-sense as the UK one, maybe you're right.

Excuse me, probably most HJ members don't need to be told this , but I have a need for therapy reasons, to express this anywhere I can:

TO ALL MOTORISTS

YOU DO NOT HAVE A CHOICE IN YOUR SELECTION OF LIGHTING FOR YOUR VEHICLE.

WHEN VISIBILITY FALLS , THRU EVENING , MIST, RAIN, OR POOR LIGHT, THE LAW - EXCEPT IN VERY LIMITED CIRCUMSTANCES- REQUIRES YOU USE HEADLIGHTS.

NOT PARKING LIGHTS .

NOT PARKING LIGHTS WITH FOG LIGHTS , UNLESS IT IS FOGGY !

NOT A MIXTURE OF LIGHTS , SOME WORKING SOME NOT

>>wouldnt it be a good idea to have a timer on fogs as well?

Yes. Front and rear!
