My 3 yr old galaxy TDI auto has v.quickly lost all drive ability. The problem started with the engine changing down gear as soon as any torque was required and the engine was revving without any transmission. Finally the car just stopped moving. There was no unusual sound from the gearbox.
The local ford dealer has checked the auto oil level and says it is OK and believes it in an internal problem with the gearbox which requires specialist knowledge by an auto gearbox repairer.
Is there a simple solution or is this going to be an expensive job?

Did any Back roomers get stuck in the rather long tailback on the A21 Sevenoaks Bypass this morning? If so, sorry. The water pump on my Range Rover seized solid and the serpentine belt got a little hot and smoke billowed out from under the bonnet. I bailed out blocking the inside lane. It took 3 hours for the AA to recover me.

Can anyone advise me on how the front end of my 1999 Audi A6 is removed to access the front of the engine, so I can change the cambelt and tensioner.
Any info would be appreciated.

Someone asked this recently (last couple of weeks) and I did post some details. Perhaps do a search for it?
My speedo on my 97 megane 1.6 is erratic. It seems to bounce up and down and is not steady. Has anyone any idea of what is causing this or how to fix it. Many Thanks. Read more
If it's still cable driven, it *could* be a worn speedo cable.

>> It's horrible inaccurate becuase its based on perception.
People buy cars using their perception. Ignore that fact and you
end up like the British car industry.
But you want to buy based on your preferences and perceptions, not someone elses.
We've just bought a 1999 LWB Frontera. Yesterday on peering under the car I noticed a chalked cross on the side of each front chassis leg. The legs have light rusting here and there on the surface in line with all the other original underside bits and pieces.
Why the chalk crosses - I'm intrigued........ Read more
The marks were probably made by an MOT tester to show the (previous?) owner problems which were "advisory" from the test point of view...
I remember reading a few years ago about a strange motorway junction whereby traffic joining the motorway joined in the right hand (fastest) lane.
Can anyone remember this and are there pictures on the web about this.
A google search has proved fruitless.

Does wheel alignment have to be re-checked after a ball joint is replaced? Read more

On the other hand a larger car has more weight/interia behind
it when it hits a pot hole etc, just the reason
why it needs more substantial components.
True - but in my experience its always the smaller cars that have the tracking way out - bigger stuff seems to be disproportionately stronger. I have seen few big cars with bent tie rods etc. One of the worst ever cars for bad tracking was the old Proton MPi - kicking a tyre would knock it out. Also the little Pugs and Cits often have wonky steering.
Don't forget rear alignment either - lots of cars have some rear toe-in in order to promote high-speed stability and the setting can be quite critical. Ideally it should be checked on a 4-wheel '3D' laser aligner (usually costs about £70).
Hi Room
I have a 6 month old MB E320CDI and the hydraulic pump that operates the braking system seems rather noisy. After 3 pumps on the brake the pump starts up for about 3 seconds then shuts off. When the engine is running its not so intrusive however it often starts first thing in the morning when I put the key in the ignition (priming itself I guess!) and seems too noisy. I have had it checked by MB today and they say its normal and nothing is wrong. It seems odd that a car that is perfect in all other ways has to immit such a noise. Any thoughts??

Whilst sitting in a traffic jam in Edinburgh today , I noticed something strange on the bus wheel next to me. It had some sort of anologue counter thingy in the middle of the wheel and the actual unit did not rotate with the wheel.
What would this be for? It could well be that every bus has one of these, its just I don't normally pay attention to them! Read more
I think Arriva buses round here do the same 2 Cymrog, some ive noticed have a sticker over the top saying 'tacho not valid'.
