Does this constitute a design failiure?
I've just taken the 306HDi for a timing belt and pully change. At 62,000 miles my local garage said I was being a bit premature, but was happy as I was paying.
Had a phone call to say the timing damper (big metal pulley-like disc, 6" in diameter) was damaged and needed replacing. It had been wobbling, fouling on one of the pulleys and big patches of freshly ground deep metal gouges were evident when I was shown the removed bits. My garage is very honest and open with me and said he has never come across the need to replace them, unless they are damaged in removal.
He suggested a design failiure, as the local Pug dealer had 5 on back order.
In the end I was only charged 350 quid for the belt, damper and pulleys to be swapped. And an apology about saying the job was being done prematurely!
Any comments?

Needs changing every 50,000 miles, costs nearly £150 from the dealer, good chance if not changed it will rip the cambelt off and require a top end rebuild.
No, no reasons to change the design, but plenty not to!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
Since it's extremely quiet in here today, and it's almost Friday.......

I've had an idea for weeks of backroom fun!
1) Each week, a moderator chooses one character from the Flame Warriors site.
2) We all send in nominations to the moderator naming the backroomer the chosen character most closely resembles
3) Moderator selects the backroomers with the highest number of nominations and uses it as the basis for a backroom poll.
On second thoughts, perhaps not . . . .
I'm looking to by a 2003 MGtf. I found one priced well below the norm, but it was advertised as accident damaged, but repaired by MG Specialists, with only frontal damage. I did an AA check who told me everything about the car, and all was fine except they are telling me at CAT B it shouldnt even be on the road? The seller seems to think that it's fine and is happy for me to get it taken to a mechanic for any inspection. This seems fair enough, but will i be able to insure it, or even drive it legally?
Any help or experience would be very welcome Read more
Hi,
Yes, avoid the cat B, there are plenty for sale both new and used. If you like these cars then go for one. The discounts you get will easily cover an independent mechanical warranty, and if you buy from a dealer they may throw one in anyway. Mine's a 98 mpi from new and is used most days and is of course 100% reliable with no head gasket problems, as are the vast majority of them. I would recommend the mpi against the VVC on grounds of cost, complexity, noise, servicing, insurance, and longevity.
If you love the looks of them the MX5 just pales into insignificance. This is just my opinion, I don't want to start a MGF/MX5 war. It's your choice.

Just bought a new Audi A4 Cabriolet 1.8T and have done approx 300 miles in it.
It has suddenly started making a funny noise when I've just started the engine and I pull away in first gear. It normally happens after about 4 - 5 feet of travel and just makes a strange clunking noise (only once) and from then it is fine.
I have no idea what the noise is or where it's coming from - but get feedback through the steering wheel and the accelerator.
I can't get to an Audi garage until next week, and just wondered if it was serious?
On another note, are Audi gearboxes normally quite 'clunky' - I have to really pull it into 2nd gear, rather than slide it in. Read more
Should it be so audible and whilst I'm moving?
All the Vauxhall's I've owned that have had ABS can be heard. It can't do it's self test unless the car is moving as it needs to check the sensors on the wheels are working, besides other checks.
My daughter has one of these and the ignition switch feels wierd in that it doesn't have the usual 'clicks' to Position 1, 2 etc, it's just all sort of 'mushy'.
Is this normal with Seat's (and poss all VAG vehicles)? Read more
Bump - anyone?
Does anybody out there know of any car or household product that will get rid of and also deter the growth of that horrible green mould that grows on your car window seals(not garaged obviously). My car has started to show signs of this mould and its only 11 months old.I thought about using bleach but wasn't sure if it might ruin the rubber and the car paint.
Any ideas gladly received. Read more
Thanks for highlighting the previous thread.I think i will try and use some of the caravan cleaning fluid that was reccommended.
Hi,
I have fitted a new stereo in my daughter's 2000 base level Punto. All plugs on the stereo matched the sockets in the wiring harness fine. The stereo has an eight-connection output ISO plug for the speakers, two wires each for two front and two rear speakers. The wiring harness also has an eight-connection socket, but is only wired for front speakers. It just has holes where the other leads should go. (I have two rear speakers to fit and wire.)
Any suggestions for the best way to 'break in' to the connection to enable the rear speakers to be connected? Can the missing connections be put into the existing ISO socket? Are adaptor leads made which will piggy back off the existing connection? I don't really want a cut and join solution if I can help it.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. The crimp terminals (soldered!) look the biz so I will be trying those.

Can anyone recommend agood valeting firm in the Sunderland area?

Thanks for the reply, normally I would do this myself, and we do have a steamer, but I don't think I would have any luck, I don't think I use it properly, the car has 11 years worth of general use on the seats, it's quite ground in by now!

From FleetNewsNet:
"GERMAN motoring organisation ADAC has gone for British after choosing MG cars for its driver training centre.
The first MG ZRs were delivered this month (March 05) to its centre near Dusseldorf. They will be used to teach drivers the safe way to handle a car on purpose-built handling areas that simulate heavy rain, ice and snow."
Isn't it amazing that elsewhere anyone who bought an MGR in the last 6 mths has been described as 'stupid' yet an organisation in Germany choose MG rather than any of the usual suspects.

Perhaps it's a misprint and they really wanted some cars to train their mechanics on.

And these warranties only apply if the car has been inspected annually at a dealer, and any underbody coatings reapplied with fresh underseal where necessary.
