Just bought a new Audi A4 Cabriolet 1.8T and have done approx 300 miles in it.
It has suddenly started making a funny noise when I've just started the engine and I pull away in first gear. It normally happens after about 4 - 5 feet of travel and just makes a strange clunking noise (only once) and from then it is fine.
I have no idea what the noise is or where it's coming from - but get feedback through the steering wheel and the accelerator.
I can't get to an Audi garage until next week, and just wondered if it was serious?
On another note, are Audi gearboxes normally quite 'clunky' - I have to really pull it into 2nd gear, rather than slide it in.

Sounds like it's the ABS brake system doing it's self check.

Should it be so audible and whilst I'm moving?

All the Vauxhall's I've owned that have had ABS can be heard. It can't do it's self test unless the car is moving as it needs to check the sensors on the wheels are working, besides other checks.

I agree that its probably the ABS self-test, and yes the Audi gearbox is a bit notchy but smoothes out when hot. I have a 2004 A4 Avant which is like this.

Not had a car with ABS before so wouldn't know!
Will the gearbox loosen up? I found the test car I drove to be much slicker than mine.

I think based upon what you say that the gearbox will loosen up, however I still say that these boxes are notchy when very cold.

My A4 gearbox was similar.
I drove an Audi A2 asa replecement car for a day: it was IMPOSSIBLE to select 2nd gear until you had travelled two miles and the engine was warm!

The gearbox will probably improve a bit with time as the synchros bed in. If its still 'difficult' after a few thousand miles then I would consider changing the gearbox oil to one of the 'speciality' friction-modified manual transmission oils that are now becoming available. They are forumlated to improve synchro engagement and provide higher levels of gear protection than the factory-fill oil.
