And a 20hp Austin Goodwood that sounds like a V8 and can outrun a Ford Anglia....

"Have a nice life" that's a late C20 saying if I ever heard one (amongst others "Hassle", "stalking" and "mugging") hardly commo pralance of the late 60s.

Not that I watch it....of course.

I recently upgraded my discs and pads from standard to EBC Turbo Groove discs and Greenstuff pads. The change has gone well and as the brakes are bedding in, the braking is improving - with little or no brake dust. Thanks to those who contributed!

Now, I am looking to tackle the rear brakes, which are drums/shoes set up. I have never owned a car with drums/shoes on the rear so this is a novelty for me!

I want to change my brake shoes - but don't know 'what size' of shoes to buy and what I should be measuring to determine which set of shoes to buy. I have spoken to PUG but their parts department haven't been of much help since much of the 205 data has been deleted from their systems so unless I tell them what item I need, they can't help. Can anyone kindly help me out here?

Many thanks! Read more

Quite right GrahamF1. I'm coming to terms with the 'quirks' of my PUG and why they exasperate many who own them and service them ;)

It might take the 40mm shoes as that would make 'sense' but how do you figure this:

My front (vented) discs are the standard 247mm. My car has a 1.9 engine, with the same braking system as the 1.9 GTi (Lucas) yet when it came to fitting the discs, I had an offset for that of a 1.6 GTi (44mm) and NOT as expected of 34mm as for the 1.9 - so just because I have Lucas at the front, I do not take it for granted that I will have Lucas on the rear ;)

We have friends from America in UK for 2 - 3 years and they need to buy a 7 seater estate car for large family. Must be auto, budget is £3k ish more if a good deal. Objective is for the car to last the 2 - 3 years doing about 10 - 15k miles pa.

My suggested list is a people carrier eg Galaxy or Mercedes E class or Volvo 940/960.

Are there any other suggestions in this price range?

OK - first post here so here goes:-

I ahve an aging Daewoo Nubira Estate - 1998 (Bough for BCA auction 5 years ago and has been good value upto the last year or so - now feeling the pinch with highter part prices) - and now not worth spending any more money on. I ahve 1 child with another due in the next month - oh and a dog

So -was looking for a better Estate. I currently have £4-4.5 and was again thinking of going down to BCA Auctions and seeing what I can get - say Ex-company one

I have ruled out People Carriers as an Estate seems to have more room - and I have a dog aswell - so dont have to keep taking out the rear seats.

But of course - which Estate for my money.

The one that seems or come to mind - is a A4 Avant - say 5 years old - goes or bad choice - shall I go for a Diesel???

The other one that I may also go for is one I have liked for a while - Rover 75 Estate. With Rovers recent demise - is this a viable option?

Any advice appreciated

Vansboy

My trusty Maestro van was replaced a few months back with an Omega.

Surprised no suggestions for one of these! VERY good value if you consider list prices when new - not that anyone would have paid that much.

I had originally thought 406,at a similar budget as you. Certainly if I'd been able to find a 'nice' one, I'd have done so. Unfortunatly, many miles wasted auction shopping couldn't offer me one - some VERY poor examples around!!

So I've gone down in £$£$ & got, what seems to be a rather good car, lots of toys & space & comfort & less than £2,000 serviced & cambelted!!

I've recently dumped my old cassette radio for an 'Aldi special'. £49, mp3 cdrw, rds etc etc. Works fine for me.

When braking from speed there seems to be a thudding noise coming from the rear of the car. its not just a single thud, its quite a rapid thud until the car is at stand still.
just wondering if anybody has any clues to what this could be. any advise would be greatly recieved.

rear axle needs to be lowered apart from chassis, and rubber bungs replaced. I believe there are bolts under the seats. Never done it, just read about it on a ZX which is nearidentical.

Hi all - I was just wondering if this has happened to any of you with the colour SatNav system.

Yesterday it seemed to hang at "route calculation in progress" with no instructions being given however switching to "check route" there was the route shown on the map.

Today it is working but taking an age to calculate the route.

Any help much appreciated. Regards, Jon.

Hi - have just spoken to a technically literate friend who tells me that you just buy a lens cleaning CD, bung it in the slot, let it whizz round for a few secs. and Bobs yer uncle.

Many thanks for your help - apparently all CD/DVD drives should get the treatment once in a while.

HI

I have just taken delivery of a new car from a car supermarket .The Certificate of conformity shows the date as October 03. Yet looking at components and stickers in the engine bay all appear around 10/04 The vin number decoder ( found elsewhere on this site)cannot decode the vin number . It is a Peugeot..any ideas on how to work out the actual build date?

Thanks

Drove down to Hertfordshire on Thursday night from Leeds via M62 and A1. At the Blyth roundabout we were left standing by a 911 who shot off in to the distance.

Many many miles later I saw the 911 stuck behind the two wagons who were side by side - usual case of one wagon doing 55.9, the other 56 mph! The 911 must have been behind these two for miles as he had left us at the roundabout and we had done a good few miles from that point. Impatience was evident with the 911 weaving left and right in the outside lane.

We were in the queue behind the wagons when the Porsche driver suddenly darted in to the inside lane and then used the layby to undertake the wagons. It was one of the most stupid things I've ever seen anyone do and neither me or the wife could quite believe it.

Once the Porsche had gone we were stuck behind the wagons for another 3 miles! Read more
