Drove down to Hertfordshire on Thursday night from Leeds via M62 and A1. At the Blyth roundabout we were left standing by a 911 who shot off in to the distance.
Many many miles later I saw the 911 stuck behind the two wagons who were side by side - usual case of one wagon doing 55.9, the other 56 mph! The 911 must have been behind these two for miles as he had left us at the roundabout and we had done a good few miles from that point. Impatience was evident with the 911 weaving left and right in the outside lane.
We were in the queue behind the wagons when the Porsche driver suddenly darted in to the inside lane and then used the layby to undertake the wagons. It was one of the most stupid things I've ever seen anyone do and neither me or the wife could quite believe it.
Once the Porsche had gone we were stuck behind the wagons for another 3 miles!

You'll know what to do next time, then!

Although it was a silly thing to do, I bet the majority of us can understand why he felt the need to do it!
I always remember something similar in France. On one of these long treelined A roads, guy in a Citroen CX overtook me and the 2 cars in front, then when he realised there was a car coming towards him, he pulled into the long layby on his left hand side and drove down it whilst the other car passed, and then carried on his overtaking manoeuvre!

Even if the 911 driver had to slow from 120 down to approx 60 for three minutes / miles it would have only cost him or her 3 minutes on their journey. Was it worth it?
I don't want to seem like a square but driving faster should be to either have fun safely or make a long journey shorter, ie, a faster average speed over a longer time.
The chances are the 911 driver would have had to wait for a few miles before getting the opportunity of the layby undertake, one or two miles more, at the most, and he would have got past the lorries safely and legally.
Hopefully they will be dead at the foot of a tree, etc, soon rather than serving a six month sentence for killing some innocent bystander. If they killed somone I knew I'd put a contract out on them.
|
Revenge for all those Porsche 911s that park stupidly making it difficult for lorries to get through!
On the subject of Porsches, I never understood the thinking behind the Cayenne, but the other day, on the M3, I saw exactly what Porsche must have had in mind when it was concieved. The Cayenne is clearly designed for tailgating drivers doing 70 mph in lane 3 of a busy motorway.
Cheers, Sofa Spud

This is where you pause to think, "Hang on, why aren't there any cameras to catch the likes of drivers like that?"
|
I actually think lorry drivers are deliberately trying to annoy drivers similar to the 911. Personally if I was a truck driver I'd do exactly that as car drivers cant really intimidate you off the road.
Same tactic can be used for tail gaters ie drive annoyingly slow/sensibly.

Not just lorry drivers. An SLK200 deliberately sat in the outside lane on Saturday, clearly trying to suggest that his asthmatic little posemobile was really a performance machine. ;-)
The temptation to overtake on the inside was there (I admit), but I'm glad to say I resisted.

For "cameras" read "policemen" :)

Before anybody wonders, it wasn't me!
I'm comfortable enough to have a 911, but not enough to risk it like that.
Nor am I confident enough in my driving ability to believe that I could pull it off.

|
If I had a 911 or Ferrari I'd also drive slowly just to show that I've got nothing to prove that'd show most wannabies.

Oh yes, Arty.
Nothing irritates a Scooby more than just sauntering along, refusing to take the 'challenge' that they are clearly offering. But I do let them past; I wouldn't dream of driving obstructively.
(Well, not deliberately anyway!)

But he'd already been waiting a few minutes before he was caught up, and if you actually have to follow the same slow vehicle for another 3 miles it covers a lot of ground. He also didn't know it would only cost him another 3 minutes - with selfish lane hogging like that assuming the truck driver has any sense can soon go out the window!

Gee thanks P.
I saunter in my Scooby and refuse to take the bait by kids in mummy's Merc SLK.
Maybe we should saunter down to a cafe and put our slippers on.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

No offence meant, E!
Only to those who offer an obvious challenge! I've never understood that one; am I likely to respond positively to an offer to put my car, life and license at risk in a pointless race which, on a public road, will test only the driver's lack of common sense and hazard perception, rather than the car's ability?
Do they really think I'm that stupid?* ;-)

Patently, I disagree with you about zillions* of things, and you are usually wrong** -- but never stupid.
* OK, zillions minus one -- we did agree last week about the fate of MG-(R)over
** big grin :)
