Clio 97 1.2 handbrake - JonL
The handbrake on my wife's Clio has become ineffective to the point that it's dangerous. I've taken a drum off and there is 5 mm left on the shoes and the wheel cylinder looks ok. This makes me think the handbrake needs adjustment or new cable? How do I go about adjusting the handbrake? Any advice appreciated. Thanks Jon

Are you sure rear brake self adjusters are working correctly.Often found that cable is ok but adjusters need manual adjustment..How many clicks on H/B ratchet do you get to fully on?..

Hi Steve - ratchet as far as it can go and still won't hold the car on an incline. How do I do a manual adjustment?

Not certain on clio. But usualy would be at rear of handbrake lever. ie need to remove the trim around it to access adjusters.

You may find it is the supposed auto adjusters in the drum, had the same prob with my car.Raise a rear wheel and spin it .You should hear the drum just catching the shoes. If not pull the drum off,or there may be an aperture giving access to the adjuster on the backplate, and ease the adjuster out a little.Put drum back on and spin again.Ensure brake is not binding, repeat on other side. Can be a right fiddle,it took me ages to get my h/brake to hold on a hill.I also had to replace the shoes even though the old ones did not seem much worn, but they would not hold no matter how I adjusted them.

Make sure the rear shoes are adjusted before H/B/cable..I would also advise giving the brake drums/shoes a rub with medium grade emery cloth. As they may be glazed where the shoes rub on inside of drum.
