I'm not having a go at other posters (really I'm not) but does anyone buy this 'motorway miles' thing?
Its usually included to somehow stop you devaluing the car for high miles. Now I would ask the following questions/make the following statements.
1. If the car has had more than one owner how would the seller know the miles put on by the previous owner were 'motorway miles'.
2. Even if it is one owner is the seller warranting this motorway miles fact in any way and what would that warranty be worth if you subsequently found it out to be untrue?
3. Even if it is perfectly true that the miles were 'motorway miles' so what? The thinking I understand is that the car is up to temperature and there is less wear on the engine but so what? The entire car is doing the miles not just the engine and if I am to deal with problems on a car I would much prefer to deal with engine problems where the ultimate solution may be a (relatively cheap) refurbished block than bodywork/electrical/suspension problems which can turn out to be unsolveable money pits.
So all in all give me low mileage cars everytime. Read more
I have just received this email from my insurance company regarding a complaint I made about their Indian Call Centre. It has left me speechless and fumingly angry. You can bet I did not send the information requested. They must think I'm crazy if they think I'll send this to anyone who just asks for it. For all I know it may be a scam (is it?. Here it is:

They should be able to find out all the need to know from your policy number and name. Anything else is superfluous.
Got scuff marks (several shallow marks rather than deep scratches)on windscreen after wiper arm came loose and metal part of arm touched glass while the wiper was sweeping across. Have tried insurance company who recommended replacement and Halfords glass polish which claimed to remove minor scratches (didn't work). Any tips on a cheap method of removing the marks ? For interest, car is Daewoo Nexia 3 door hatch.

Thanks everyone for the advice, have tried metal polish (similar to Brasso) and screen is much improved although deeper marks remain. Reckon I will be able to get by without changing glass. Cheers.

I've never traded a car in since all my previous cars have either gone to the scrapper, the auction or been sold privately. I will be trading my faithful car in at a dealer on Friday for a newer model. What should I do with the tax disc. It has a fair few months left to run so is worth a bit. It was not mentioned when we were discussing prices etc, but they did ask when the tax and MOT ran out. Am I expected to leave it on the car or is it mine to get a refund on? Read more
Eh, taxed until March? Is that this year or is it tax for a year and a week for an 05 registration?
If it is a new car that you have bought then it will include at least a full year's tax I should imagine.
I agree with everyone who said to leave it on, I had one customer who brought their car in for part-ex, we had paid for their 6 month tax disc on the used car that they had bought, and they had the nerve to take the tax off the swapper and claim it was expired! It spoiled what was otherwise a very good relationship with a customer who I originally thought was completely honest, but then sat and told me a barefaced lie.

Looking to sell my Passat.
1999(V) 1.9TDi (110bhp) Sport.
124,000 motorway miles (new cambelt at 120k). I'd say it's in excellent condition, on the original clutch and exhaust, doesn't eat any oil and still gets well over 60mpg on the motorway. I'm the second owner, previously a fleet car in Scotland. I bought it in Oct 2003 with 91,000 miles on the clock. Newish front tyres, rear ones have a few thousand miles left. Tax until the end of March, MOT until October.
What do people think is a reasonable asking price for a private sale? £3.5k - £4k?
Also, if I cancel my insurance policy midway through the year (having sold the car) do I still have to pay the premium (I pay monthly) for the rest of the year?
The motive behind all this is the car making me feel old before my time. I've decided to travel to work on the train, and use the proceeds of the Passat sale to buy a fun 'weekend car' - probably a Spitfire. Read more
I can see why you'd think that. But I'm just trying to honestly describe the car.
I personally would prefer the original clutch and exhaust. If a 124,000 mile Passat was on its 2nd clutch or exhaust, I'd be inclined to think it hadn't been driven with much mechanical sympathy (especially considering how tough the exhaust system on this car is).
Hi there
Last Saturday we had to put the car into the garage to have the rotar arm, leads etc changed out as it was having problems starting. The car now starts great, however, when slowing down from speed (ie on the motorway) and coming off into slower roads, junctions etc, it splutters and struggles and eventually dies.
It goes fine again on restart for about 10 mins and then does the same thing again.
We took it back to the garage who had a prod and a poke and said they couldn't see anything wrong with it.
tried it again yesterday on the way to work and it died as we suddenly had to slow down and the spluttering and struggling started. However, on the way home from work last night - it ran perfectly
but again this morning - back to cutting out.
now the garage kept going on about the carburettor and they're going to take a look at it on Saturday, but the bottom line is - it went in with one problem that was sorted - great! but now we have this problem, which to be honest could be damn dangerous especially on the motorway!
any ideas?
Thanks Read more
Had similar problem on mk 2 scirocco, have a look inside fuel filler pipe, mine had a large hole in it where petrol pump had hit it when putting in nozzle over the years! My car was coughing and stalling intermitently where dirt in the tank was being sucked up against the filter in there. after stopping, the vacuum would cease and the dirt would drop out all ready to start all over again! Sorted it by replacing the tank and filler pipe in the end, sounds worse than it was, bits were cheap enough at the breakers.
Right, after finally finding the threads concerning Micronet Showroom, I think I'll steer clear of them for now.
I'm after a new A4 Cabriolet 1.8T. The cheapest place I've found is £23206 from Drive the deal. I've only found one review of Drive the deal - which was positive about the service, but wondered if anyone else had used them?
Also if anyone can suggest a better price, I'd be interested.
Does anyone have any experience as using one of these quotes for bartering with a dealership? Read more
Our VW Touran was bought through DTD and have no complaints about the service received, even got an extra £250 off the price for collecting the car from supplying dealer instead of having it delivered.

I've just nearly had my foot chopped off by a BMW with the nastiest and most dangerous car accessory I have ever seen.
The alloy wheels have a star-shaped central hub cap, the rays of which are razor-sharp steel, and which are angled outwards slightly.
It is hard to believe this is either a BMW original alloy, or actually legal.
Has anyone else ever seen these? Read more
The alloy wheels have a star-shaped central hub cap
I'm going to beat "The Pedantic One" to it ~ they are correctly called nave plates, not hub caps.

Hello Colin,
I don't know the answer to this but someone in www.clubgti.com will. This is the ultimate tech resource for VWs, helped me with loads of things for my old scirocco.
Cheers

>>Apart from that it runs like a well oiled machine>>
Perhaps he was when he bought it...:-)
