I drove down the A1/A1(M) yesterday. There is a new motorway stretch from south of Boroughbridge to near Wetherby race track. Only the southbound section is open at the moment and it has not been open for very long at all. The road surface is terrible. Under every bridge and sign gantry there are sections that look like they have been repaired already: large rectanular sections outlined with black tar or similar. These patches are quite bumpy. The striking thing is it was under every bridge or gantry. Why should this be? What might they be doing? Read more

If they are right across the road under the bridges then these could be contraction joints?

Thinking of purchasing ex company Jan 02 307 HDi 90 Rapier with 108k miles. I hav enoticed the following:

Engine very clattery between 140 and 1800 rpm.
No real urgency in acceleration.
Soft clunking noise coming from rhs when going over minor bumps/imperfections etc. Think from rear.

The car has a complete Peugeot Service History.

What are major itmes to look out for with these cars? What is correct oil change interval? When is timing belt due to be changed? Read more

Hi,

I fitted a Halfords oil filter to my wife's Rover 420 last week. I noticed when looking inside the filter before fitting (doesn't everyone?) that the centre steel tube that supports the filter element was just plain steel, not perforated as in all other filters I've seen. So how does the oil flow through the filter? There did appear to be a gap at the far end of the tube where the oil could flow into the centre, but it was difficult to see properly. The engine runs OK and the oil light goes out, but the oil could be flowing through the bypass valve for all I know.

Anyone else noticed this, or have any comments?

However, after that, as
you say, once the pressure rail, oil ways and sump have
been purged of contaminates I'm not sure what an oil filter
really does. Except prevent a nightmare in the event of a
stray piece of sand getting into your turbo bearings or between
your piston rings.

Well, I'm certainly got going to kid myself by saying that when I service my car I do it cleanly. Especially if you place tools on the floor (or toolbox for that matter!), bits of grit or dirt can easily be picked up and accidently find their way in when adjusting tappets or filling oil.

Dear Sniffpetrol have thought up another lovely one. If only it were true:

"With the launch of the acclaimed new 3-series, BMW has also revealed details of a sophisticated new electronics package that is aimed straight at the new car's core market. Dubbed ********tronic, the new system is fully integrated into the car's control systems and allows a range of functions including full disablement of the indicators, perilously late activation of the brakes and an adapted radar cruise control that allows the driver to sit 4mm from your back bumper in the outside lane of the M6.
Amongst other neat touches, ********tronic can also apply light brake pressure at all times, covering the wheels in dust, something that will be a particular benefit if your fleet manager wouldn't let you specify alloy wheels and you want to disguise ugly plastic rim covers or the fact that if you weren't such an aspirational little **** you'd have gone for a rather better equipped Honda Accord. Initially ********tronic will be available on the forthcoming 316i and 318i models only, but the system is expected to become standard fitment for all models in the smaller 1-series range within a year.
Other German makers are expected to follow BMW's lead, including Audi who is poised to make certain versions of the A4 available with a rival system dubbed 'Pushy**** Plus'."

(edited in deference to the concerns of our dear mods!)

Sniff also show the proposed dashboard button. It has a large 'W' and a logo of an anchor. Think about it...

PU and I will be pleased to see it only applies to the 316, 318 and 1 series. Whether that is because higher spec BMs tend to be driven better, or because we are quite capable of doing all the above without electronic assistance, I will leave to the BR to decide! Read more

The March issue dropped through the letterbox this morning and it's all very different! I assume the title has been sold on. Quentin has been replaced by Jason Dawe. HJ's picture is on the front cover, perhaps he can tell us what's happened?

Hi

I recently bought a 2nd hand volvo S80 which is fine apart from the radio which although produces great FM reception has very intermittent AM reception (which is annoying as I listen to Talksport). When the car hasn't been used for a while the output is fine but after having the engine running for a while the output degrades into a sea of static noises completely drowning out the station. Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks

Was under the impression that the AM aerial is located inside
the head unit itself.

Not on car radios. The passenger cell acts as a faraday cage and can mask the signal. The aerial has to be external.

I'm thinking about buying my next motor from MicronetShowroom.com. Looking around the web I can only find one review of them which is based on a rumour, so nothing concrete there.

Does anyone have any experience of this company or the processes involved? Read more

Stuck my 306 on Autotrader website last Wednesday morning (same one that is still in classifieds - www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=5&t=29...0 ). Sold for the asking price on Thursday night with 3 others wanting to come and see it on Friday / Saturday if it wasn't sold.
I was completely honest with any faults (e.g. air con) and the fact that I've done the servicing for the last couple of years. The buyer told me how reliable Peugeot diesels are (conrods?) before handing over a big wad of £20s. Obviously not a backroomer. Read more

It was £15 for two weeks on the internet which I think is cheaper than ebay (depends on the car value). Normally I trade cars in or sell them into my extended family, but this time we are down sizing to one car, one motorbike and one bicycle and no one in the family wanted it so I had to sell privately.

got a small problem. have a peugeot 406 and recently the o/s rear door wont open. It used to be an intermmittant fault but now totally locked. Had the interior side panel off and from all I can see all the bits (connections and rods) all moving ok. Either handle fails to open it. Is it electrical????. Any help please. Ian Read more
