New section of A1(M) - Robin
I drove down the A1/A1(M) yesterday. There is a new motorway stretch from south of Boroughbridge to near Wetherby race track. Only the southbound section is open at the moment and it has not been open for very long at all. The road surface is terrible. Under every bridge and sign gantry there are sections that look like they have been repaired already: large rectanular sections outlined with black tar or similar. These patches are quite bumpy. The striking thing is it was under every bridge or gantry. Why should this be? What might they be doing?

They need to see the contractors who laid the M6(T) for lessons

Could you have driven over the test site for the first motorway speed bumps? :-)

sensors.

Maybe they will just be used to monitor traffic flow.

surely nobody could use such a think to monitor the speed of an individual car ?

Wait and see if cameras go up on the bridges a la M25 gantries.

Probably detector loops.

The surface is cut with a road saw and a cable placed into the groove created. The remainder of the gap is filled with bitumen.

Used for traffic monitoring. Dunno if they can be used for speed detection to an accuracy acceptable under law?

Perhaps this is a 'virtual toll road' and the devices monitor traffic - hence the fees received by the organisation appointed to design build and manage for the next 30 years or so?

If they are right across the road under the bridges then these could be contraction joints?
