Which V8 coupes do you think are cool? I reckon the BMW 840i is an underrated car that looks better than the new 645i.

Hi,
My sister's Pug 206 keeps on cutting out at 70mph which is hair-raising to say the least especially in heavy traffic on the motorway.
The engine just goes completely dead. The dealer has been unable to trace the fault but has replaced the fuel pump, filters, and the entire exhaust system as he said the cat had completely packed up.
The car is 5 years old and has done 80k. I'm sorry but I don't have anymore information than that.
Does anybody have any idea as to the cause?
Thanks in anticipation for your help.

I understand there may be a persistnet problem with the lambda sensors . Try chnaging it: relatively cheap. reputed to last 30k miles...

Hi all
Vovlo 850 auto GLT 2.0L 20 valve M reg ('94) 144,000m
OK...I know these are big heavy cars but i get the feeling I should be getting more 'ooomph' out of her.
To be more specific, I live in quite a hilly area and when the car starts to labour a bit and I respond by increasing the throttle, I feel and hear the auto box drop down a gear (or gears) but instead of an immediate pick up in speed the engine just seems to howl for quite a while and then slowly picks up speed. Is this normal for an automatic? (my first one).
Kick down is better....but the effect on the rev counter is alarming enough for me to immediately ease off!
The car seems to have been well cared for (bought it two weeks ago) and has been regularly serviced. Would a bit of TLC make any difference do you think? i.e. new air filter, plugs, oil change etc. (i realise it wouldn't hurt!)
Any advice appreciated
Regards
Bob
PS. please, no suggestions to post elsewhere....this is by far the best and most helpful forum on the net!

Unless the torque convertor is damaged or the 'box is slipping then it should be OK. Its an Aisan-Warner AW50-42 - a good Japanese 'box that should last 200k. If the fluid looks right then I would leave it. Couple of mm won't make any difference (are you checking the level properly?). Change fluid every 2years or 24k miles (it takes 6 litres of Dexron III for a refill).
Get the engine checked over - people often blame the autobox for engine problems. Check the kickdown cable setting. Consider manually shifting down a gear when going up/down hills, that's what the shift lever is there for.
i'm thinking of buying an M reg 1 litre 16 valve nissan micra with 102,000 miles on the clock. I'm a bit concerned about the high mileage on such a small engine, what do you think? Are they good for high mileages?
Thanks for any comments. Read more
Look out for rattling timing chain (although its not too dear to fix) also check for blown head gaskets. Its not as robust as the bigger Nissan engines.
Any hesitancy or poor throttle response is almost sure to be air flow meter. BBA-Reman do these on a 'sale or return' basis so you can try a recon one first. Cost is about £150 IIRC.
Replaced head gasket on 1.2 Rreg last weekend, everything went fine, timing spot on etc etc. Engine idles really lumpy and makes a really loud high pitched whine from somewhere round the inlet manifold. Checked all obvious loose pipes sensor connections etc. Definately not EGR as still makes noise when removed and holes blocked. Also seems to be guzzling petrol. Engine warning light is not on. Any ideas, ready to give up!! Read more
As a matter of interest. How long have you had the car..And has the warning light ever illuminated. Is it a cam driven or chain..Guzzling petrol would suggest air flow problem.or sensor not picked up by ECU.Though would find that strange if it hasnt/not detected any problems?

Hi, I need some legal advice!
I bought a car from a dealer at the beginning of October, and was told the car came with a six month "Silver" plan warranty from Motorcare Warranties. I was offered the option to upgrade the warranty by the salesman at the time of purchase. He told me an extra £50 would upgrade the cover to the next level "Gold" plan, whilst an extra £100 would upgrade it two steps to the top level "Gilt Edged" plan. I asked if I could have time to think about so he completed the warranty application form for the included "Silver" plan, which I signed, then told me I could simply phone him to let him know if I wanted to upgrade anytime before Friday morning (this was Wednesday) since that was when they sent off the applications, and I could make the additional payment over the phone. You can see my dilemma over whether to upgrade at the time here:- www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=25955&...e
As you can see on that thread I decided to go for the full upgrade to "Gilt Edged" plan, so phoned and informed the salesman on the Friday morning and performed the credit card transaction over the phone for £100. Unfortunatley, I took his word that the upgrade had been performed since I never received any further paperwork.
Today I had to call Motorcare Warranties and discovered that they have me listed as having a "Gold" plan warranty, not the "Gilt Edged" plan I paid for, which offers considerably less cover (and will not cover the £500 costs I've just been quoted by a Citroen dealer). I rang the garage that sold me the warranty and spoke to the Sales Manager who told me that:-
1) the salesman couldn't have sold me a "Gilt Edged" plan since it doesn't cover vehicles over 100k miles and runs for a minimum of a year (NEITHER of which are mentioned on the application form or in the Motorcare Warranties booklet they gave me)
2) the salesman couldn't have performed the upgrade if I didn't physically sign for the it (which is rubbish since it WAS upgraded, but only one step from "Silver" to "Gold")
3) the salesman who sold me the warranty has left the company can't be questioned
4) the relevant documentation is in storage for a company move so is unaccessible and will be for a period of time
All the Sales Manager would offer me was a refund of the extra £50 I paid for the additional step from "Gold" to "Gilted Edge" cover, but obviously that's not what I want since it leaves me with a £500+ bill to pay!
Without any written proof that the upgrade I paid for was to the "Gilted Edge" cover, do I have a leg to stand on? Read more
Sorry to hear about your troubles. I hope you do track them down and sort things out.
Here is a suggestion.
I don't know if my plan is flawed or not as I dont know about citreon, but most cars with xenon headlights are available both in models with and without xenon headlights.
What I would do personally is get hold of a pair of standard headlight units from a breaker (£20-£50 each) and fit those. Cut the wiring back from the input to the HV transformer, so that you are just getting a standard 12v feed.
I'd say that can be done for under £100

Other than the police, is there anywhere that I can report a car is missing it's numberplate?
Long & short of it is, there is a Metro in our village that has been missing it's rear numberplate since mid November last year. The car is used frequently by it's owner, but I don't know her personally to casually mention it to her. Not that she's unaware it's missing of course -- it's been led face down on the parcel shelf since it fell off. Duh!!
I've telephoned the local nick a couple of times, and got the usual 'we'll look into it sir'.
A ploice patrol car drives through the village on a weekly basis, but still the car is missing it's rear numberplate. It's not as if it's unoticable, because most of the time the Metro is parked on the main road through the village and is clearly visible.

Without such action it seems an unwise buy.
