Hey there,

was just wondering if somebody could tell me how to see the visable condition of cambelt and the pulley?

I've read that you have to look underneath the engine, but when looking I cannot see anything,

thanks for any replies,

Paul :) Read more

Unlikely you can see the belt without removing the covers, a pig of a job in itself. If the car has covered more than 50k miles I would advise having it changed anyway, belt and pullies. Its an absolute so'n'so of a job, I have done one and have torn the page out of the book to remind me not to do one again! Aparrently it is slightly easier if you undo all the engine mounts and wedge the engine towards the nearside. The two piece bottom pulley has a habit of falling apart so consider changing it at this time, only adds about £125 to the bill. French cars, Gallic flair, Huh!

I had to chuckle at the motoring sheets in the Sunday Times today when they asked people to name the most irritating drivers.

The one that tickled my chuckle bones?

"Avoid people driving with hats, especially flat caps. And, why do they always seem to have their mouth open"?

God, that is sooooooooo true

Confess I do it while riding. Validates that old biker admonition I guess: "Git yer knees in the breeze and some bugs in yer teeth".

Why are some exhaust tail pipes turned downwards at the end?

This doesn't seem to be so common on newer cars, and a previous theory that it was only diesels turns out to be inaccurate.

Wow! I was born in 1954! Is Raydyot still in existence? It used to be one of those bastions of Autocar, Practical motorist etc.

I wonder what would happen if I put one on my C5.......

Don't answer that! There's bad taste and reeeeeely bad taste!

Hi all,
I have replaced the passenger side wheel bearing twice in as many weeks on my MK 3 Fiesta XR2i 1991 1.6 and it has started to groan again after only one day on the car and a short motorway run.

I removed the hub/carrier from the car and got 2 different local garages to fit the bearing for me (1st one even put the hub back for me on the car).

Everything is ok until a drive on the motorway or similar for about 10 min and then the groaning noise returns with vibration in sync with the noise.

Am I missing something here or could the hub be damaged and is it worth getting one from a scrappie? I have also changed the outer CV joint on the side concerned.
Any Thoughts please
Many Thanks

Interesting article in Telegraph today about the fact that fixed penalties are illegal. Unfortunately, I think you need to be registered with Telegraph to read it (unless you go out and buy today's and read Christopher Booker's column).
However, a proforma letter is available here
www.bwmaonline.com/Legal%20-%20Proforma%20letter.h...m

if you wish to test this when you get your next speeding or parking etc fine!
Telegraph article is here (registration is free I think)

I am not a happy man. She has gone all cuddly
though since the event, so not all is bad. Mind you,
if she thinks she get round me that way...

Given the previous 15 episodes of the Growler Chronicles, she will ... she will!

Meanwhile, Mrs Ian, after years of refusing my kind offers to send her to driving school and/or let her learn in my car, has finally decided that these car thingies could prove quite useful...
She's taking more-than-passing interest in the motoring magazines these days, which is a bad sign.
"That's cute!" (BMW 1-series)
"I don't like that colour!"
"That's ugly!" (Subaru!)
etc etc etc

I had to break her heart and tell her the household budget might not quite stretch to a C-Class Merc!

I agree. So often its those that have the task of implementing policy that get the blame, rather than those that formulate the policy.

Just stumbled onto this site, where according to the description " boasts its database has over 220 million U.S. driver's license photos and driver's license information currently on file, and that it's free of charge".
At DriversLicenseSearch.com
And yes I have tried it once.
