Hi,
I've been having this problem ever since I reinstalled my PC in December. Basically I need to disable the "Firewall" part of Norton Internet Security every time I want to download e-mails using Outlook 2000, otherwise the connection just times out.
There are no errors recorded in the Firewall logs, only information logs like "Outlook is attempting to access the Internet". In the Firewall configurations, Outlook is set to "Permit all". The e-mails are being downloaded from POP3 servers.
Has anybody got any ideas?
Thanks

Hi, yes of course the car's still for sale; the advert's only 18 months old.
I'm the second owner, it's £1,900 and is in perfect condition. I'm based in the UK, in Newcastle.
Tell me, how will you be able to pay for the car If you are based in South Africa?
Thanks,
V

Thanks for your mail, everything sound good.My client Is very intrested in buying your car which is ready to pay you with his company cheque which will include the shipment cost and some other bills.
My client made me understand the cheque will be £4,000.When you do receive the cheque you deduct your money for the car and send the remaining money back same day to the shipping agent that is coming for the pick up at your location.
If you are satified with the arrangement kindly send Me your full name and address including your contact Number in order for my client to issue the cheque out in your name.
I will be looking forward to your quick response and The information.Cheers

Hi,
Can I propose something? I'm keen to "launder" some cash that I don't want the UK Tax authorities to know about. I'd like to suggest that you give me a cheque for a larger amount and I'll give you cash in return.
So, if you were to raise a draft for £12,000, I would sell you the car for £2,000, then give you another £10,000 in change. I don't know ho well off you are for funds, but I'm looking to exchange anything up to, say £150,000 in cash for a draft. If you could get a draft for £152,000, I could meet you with £150,000 in cash and the car. You'd be doing me a real favour.
I'd need the draft to be in a friend's name, "Mike Hunt", as I'm trying to keep this "out of sight", if you know what I mean.
Don't be frightened by the sums; anything from the £2,000 you suggest up to £150,000 would be good for me. Obviously, if this work out, there would be more to come - I need to hide nearly £1.5 Million in total.
Let me know and we can arrange a time and place to meet. I'm keen that we should meet somewhere neutral, like in London.
I'm afraid I'm being bugged by the Police, so to make sure know it's you, we need a codeword to identify that our emails aren't being made up by someone else. How about in each email we quote the words "Chicken Bumswing"? Please use it as the title for any future emails.
I'm keen to move quickly, because if we don't get this brook babbling we'll be left looking like doe-eyed labradors.

Does anyone know how long the average car in Britain lasts?
And what proportion of cars that were new in 1990 are still on the road? And 1985? 1980?
Are there statistics on such things? And if not, would anyone care to hazard a guess? Read more
An attempt was made in the early days of NZ importing
of used Japanese cars to cast aspersions on them....
I think Japanese cars made for the world market do have good undersealing. However cars made just for the Japanese domestic market tend not to have much and I would suspect that rust would set in rapidly in the UK. Mind you, a blast of Dinitrol underneath shouldn't cost more than £100 and even a 'bells and whistles' rust proofing job should cost less than £250.
The problem in the UK now is the ESVA, which is designed as an obstacle to bringing in more recent Jap-market cars. It doesn't apply in other countries (e.g. Ireland) so I'm wondering if you could import a late-model used Japanese car into Ireland, register it there, and then import into the UK?
Hi, changed the stereo in the rover recently to a sony one as the original was a tape player and the settings were lost each time on turning off the ignition.
This I thought was relatively easy to fix as the yellow and red wires just needed changing back, bizarrely they had to be swapped in last car for same problem.
All seemed well until i put stereo back in the slot when something made a cracking noise where a wire had presumably touched something.
Since this has happened the radio, electric windows, wiper function one, back wiper, radio display, heated window switch, fog light all now do not operate.
Simple I thought blown a fuse. Well I found a blown fuse swapped it and nothing works still. Checked all fuses had em out put em back in can't get a thing.
Only way radio will work is to connect both yellow and red to yellow in which case the radio stays permanently on after ignition which I don't want to do as it'll flat the battery.
ALso all above things still do not work.

Cheers, when I said clean up the display I mean that
half of the digits do not work correctly!
I can't imagine anything in an electronic box of tricks like this to horribly wrong without it being a contact problem. I used to get "funny" characters on my radio cassette until I cleaned the front panel contacts up. Is it a definite split, i.e. 4 digits working, 4 digits not? I run a 20 year old calculator that runs perfectly (if a little slowly)!
SWMBO and I are heading off to USA in May with 2 friends and aim to hire a car in Atlanta for 6 days dropping it off in New Orleans.
I have very good rates from www.carrentals.co.uk.ie economy 4 door auto a/c @£116 , Full size 4 door ditto @ £188 , extra £5 per day covers additional driver and damage exclusion waiver.
Has anybody used this company ? If so, what do you think of them. They have offered to price match any rate I get elsewhere.
Alternatively s it better to rent when we get there? Read more
Saw this discussion quite late and most of what I intended to say has been covered-
Had used Dollar rental through airline network to book a Dodge Stratus 2.4 for 3 days £66 all inclusive, including a full tank of petrol!
Had to stay on for another day,so rented a bigger car ie a Pontiac Grand Prix 3.7 litre for a day at £28 again all inclusive from Budget. Both companies had exceptional service, but the former is more competitive.
However you can only book atleast a week in advance on the airline network site. There was an option by which you could click on a free Platinum upgrade which got you a free full tank and additional drivers for no extra cost.
The only company that were reasonable on one way rental were National car rental.I dont think they quoted anything extra,or perhaps a minimal amount.
I agree with the others. Its better to rent the biggest and most comfy car, since long journeys become less tiresome and where in the U.K can you drive a 4 litre car and pay for it what you would essentially pay for a Micra here!

I posted in a hurry without checking it.
Hi,
Friday night on the motorway a van crashed into the vehicle ahead of him in the fast lane, then swerved into my lane and hit my side. My car doors were quite badly damaged. I've got all his details and that, and I assume it would be his fault and covered by his employer's insurance (he was in a company van).
I pay a lot for my insurance as I've only been driving a few months and have a high risk job, and can't really afford to pay any more. Am I right in thinking that if I report an accident to my insurers my insurance goes up even if it is not my fault as I am then seen as higher risk? Because if that's the case am I better just trying to settle direct with the guy and get the damage fixed myself?
Advice welcomed... Read more

If that's your personal opinion then fine, but it is NOT good advice.

You should report this incident asap as a matter of course. Doing this you'll be able to use your uninsured loss recovery service etc if you have it.
If this is your first accident you may not know the procedure of keeping your costs to a minimum but making sure you're fully re imbursed for these.
Your insurers should be able to advise, as can certain members of this forum ie Mark and Retro.

Thanks ya'll Read more
The S60 has position marking lights in the rear light clusters, they give off a red light to either side of the car. Maybe the S80 has a similar arrangement?

A simple question really, Why?
These accessories have been hijacked by the boy racer fraternity much to IMO to the detrimental effect on the image and maybe residuals of cars there fitted to as standard, ie Lexus, Mazda etc.
The sight of a tired Ford Escort with rear lenses that look ridiculas and are probably worth more than the car make me cringe. I want to ask the driver, Why? Why? (fit them)
Each to there own I suppose.

One newspaper summed up Chavs quite succinctly a few months back as people with "no manners, no morals and no taste". A bit better than my description of them...."lowlife".

Rust is an electrolitic process, so technically, once you've removed the existing rust and removed the conditions for it to re appear, the problem should be gone for good.
How practical that is in many situations is another matter though.
I know because I hate to admit here that I've been advised to sell the discovery as the chap who has just done the welding for the MOT has told me that I should not have the car this time next year.

PS
The simplest method if you have XP is to use the Hibernate feature and not Standby.
Using Hibernate means that all settings are saved before the system shuts down whereas in the event say, of a power cut, they would be lost with Standby.
With the Hibernate feature, all that has to be done is shut down active elements such as a dialup connection or TV card and then press the main on/off case button (configure Hibernate to do this).
When you press the on/off button again the system awakes, including the monitor, and all your open programs such as Word are exactly as you left them.
