Why are some exhaust tail pipes turned downwards at the end?

This doesn't seem to be so common on newer cars, and a previous theory that it was only diesels turns out to be inaccurate.

At least as far as BMWs are concerned, their diesels have all had downturned tail pipes (single or double) up till now.
However the current generation of EU4 environmentally compliant models, which are fitted with particulate filters, have straight out tail pipes.

DL answered this in another thread of same title..seemed logical to me.As the above post is..ie turned down pipe prevents bumper getting covered in soot

"turned down pipe prevents bumper getting covered in soot"

Or persons standing in the line of fire.

The little grey cells are failing now, but I've a feeling that when I was a lad I can remember seeing cars with 'bolt on' tailpipe deflectors that looked something like the shades you see on desk lamps (but chromed) There were certainly 'straight' tail pipe enhancers - just slightly larger diameter bits of chromed pipe that slipped over the tail pipe, but I'm sure that some came in a bizarre fan shape that sort of 'sprayed' the gases over a wider area!

Can anyone else remember the 'fan shaped'/ lampshade variety?

Or am I dreaming?

Yes - on a Ford Classic/Capri (not the hockey stick model)

Graeme,
In 1954 (Autocar) Raydyot advertised an exhaust deflector - fan shaped, it clipped on to the tailpipe. It prevented sooty marks on garage doors etc and also mellowed the exhaust note. A bargain at 15 bob. I can also remember a conical lampshade sort of exhaust extractor which clipped on to the tailpipe. At speed it helped to draw out the exhaust gases, improving engine performance.

"improving engine performance" - just like the twin 4 inch (at least) tailpipes I saw on a Corsa this afternoon. And yes, I also remember those fan shaped, fluted deflectors.
Is one just visible on the back of the 1100 here?

or even here (but fluted)?

When I first got it, my Mondeo had a downward facing exhuast pipe despite the fact it was a 2.0 petrol.

Air turbulence in the wake of a car can result in road dirt and exhaust gas products being drawn up and deposited on the rear of the car. The severity is influenced by, amongst other things, the shape of the car body. Downward turning exhaust tailpipes were fitted, where it was found to be necessary, in an attempt to deflect the exhaust gas products away from the area of turbulence and thus to minimise the amount of soot that was deposited on the car. At one time, the shape of a car body would be designed almost exclusively by stylists, with little or no input from aerodynamicists, with the result that cars usually had, to one degree or another, seriously undesirable aerodynamic characteristics. With the increasing knowledge of vehicle body aerodynamics, and the increasing influence on car body design given to aerodynamicists, downward turning tailpipes have become largely unnecessary. I?ve no doubt that you will have noticed that the worst offenders when it comes to rear ends getting dirty are hatch backs, but fortunately they are getting better all the time. I remember having a 1987 XR2 which would get it?s rear absolutely filthy within couple of minutes of being driven on wet roads.

The Accord Tourer is its mate. The tailgate also gets absolutely filthy in wet weather.

My Renault 4 had a thing looking like a Hoover attachment. It didn't point downwards, just spread the exhaust very thinly.

Not too mention the front side windows, I'm beginning to question it's aerodynamic credentials - I had an unexpectedly easy passage from J25 thru to J15 on the M25 and found myself with time to spare, I kept my average speed down and found my mileage increased exponentially.

Could be gearing but 31-32mph x 1000rpm in top seems low enough to me.

Wow! I was born in 1954! Is Raydyot still in existence? It used to be one of those bastions of Autocar, Practical motorist etc.

I wonder what would happen if I put one on my C5.......

Don't answer that! There's bad taste and reeeeeely bad taste!

:-)
