My son's Citroen ZX turbo diesel appears to be losing water although no puddles or tell tale "water marks" seem to be present, except a bit round the rad cap. The water is not at all foamy and does not smell of combustion. It does not overheat either and runs at a constant 85 to 90c. Would a new rad cap fix it? Read more
Today the Discovery went in for its MOT and Failed!
£500 worth ofwork, which didn't surprise me that much. It sailed through last year at the same garage, and to be fair some of the points I was expecting.
Well she's a good old gal so the cash will flow to help her but it got me thinking..... which is always dangerous I know.
The wife has that Nissan Almera auto but has been keen on exploring a combined car. I am perhaps tempted by a newer Discovery automatic. I know they are hopeless on economy but I do find myself needing sonething to tow a trailer on occasions and I like the Discovery, and it would reduce our car count. It seems that wifey is not too bothered about size but definitely needs an auto.
The alternative is to swap Almera and disco for an automatic MPV, I would be looking for something perhaps 3 or 4 years old, and 7 seats, though it wouldn't have to be a large 7 seater (grande scenic size) what have you all got, tried and what would you all recommend?

Good God he said smallish. The way this is going we will end up with the Aurora. (if they ever get it back out of the German Shipyard got coil problems apparently)
Evening all,
Twice this evening my battery light on the dash stayed on longer than normal after starting the car, it went out fully after a little while but it started to flicker gently on tickover.
The belt isn't slack, left it an hour or so and started it a couple of times, light went out straight away but gently flickered until i revved the engine, it then went out completely.
I'm thinking it's the bushes, if so what sort of a job is it and any ideas on prices or other solutions to the symptoms.
Thanks

Is it a diesel or petrol?
I know the diesel cavaliers of this vintage have the alternator and power steering pump in one unit.
A mate of mine had this problem and the alternator eventually overcooked itself, needing a pretty expensive repair, £200 for the alternator/pump alone IIRC.
yesterday drove my astra 94 1.4 to wakefield, the only apparent thing was the temp guage was in the blue and not rising at all, to its normal temp, which is halfway.
upon stopping i drove in the petrol station and thought i might have a blockage so i gave the hoses a good squeeze, the temp went to half but settled back to the blue, i think it could be the thermostat, the car runs normally.
Any ideas ?? Read more

I have a Royal Sun Alliance policy set up by a very well known commercial vehicle insurance broker.
Recently, as many of you are aware I had to get my van repaired after a B and Q trolley bay jumped out in front of me and cause severe damage to the side of my 3 month old van! The dealer lent me FOC their demonstrater van, which was similar to my own.
Because my broker tried to fleece me for over £100 (they didn't reckon on my connections with this site and Mark (RLBS) :) ) I decided I wanted to deal direct with the insurer over this issue.
I contacted them and they said that they could do this if I wrote to them. So, 10 minuites and one fax later I was speaking directly to them about changing my insurance for a fixed period to this other vehicle, then back when I had my own back - wait for it - for no extra charge!
I have now given my insurers authority to deal with me over this policy until the renewal date. It works!
So, it seems that once they have found your cheap policy, some brokers are only good for taking money from you to get things done that the underwiters will do free of charge! And if you want to avoid this, write to your insurers and tell them you wish to deal with them direct.

When I changed my van and had take out a new policy, I did get a quote from NFU. They were some £100 more on a £380 policy. The dealer suggested I gave them a call as several cover notes for commecial vehicles come though from them (to tax new vehicles).
If their service is as good as everyone says I may give them another call at renewal.
People (me included) do not properly consider the implications of actually haveing to use a policy. Fortunately my approach in this case seems to have worked well for me.

Advertisment seen in the Sunday Times motoring supplement 6 Feb.2005:
?The Back Seat Video Baby Monitor allows you to keep an eye on the baby in the back without turning around. The device comprises a small video camera mounted on the head restraint and a 2.5in screen attached to the dashboard. In daylight the image is in colour and at night the camera uses infra-red sensors to provide a mono picture?.

"TV defined means any cathode ray tube carried on a vehicle and on which there can be displayed an image dereived from a television broadcast, a recording or a camera or cumputer."
Oh so seeing as none I've ever seen are CRT-based, instead being LCD or TFT does that mean the law doesn't apply to them?
My neighbour's Rover 800 Vitesse (1995) has stpped - never to go again. My neighbour's crime was to change the battery on the car and now it is immobilised and the car wont start! We asked the Rover garage if there was an emergency code that could be accessed through the judicious use of the door lock in particular sequence but the garage said there was no emergency code for the car (they fed the chassis number into the discus system). Where do we go from here? His wifes car is in the garage behind and cant get out and I've lent him our old Punto. Any thoughts appreciated! Read more
Hi,
If you're still stuck then I'd try the re-synching advice on www.remotekey.co.uk - or failing that a phone call to them.

Hi
Something really wierd has started to happen ( this morning)
Bit of a electrical problem happened after i jet washed the car, but has never happene before, and i requarly take it to the jet wash
1st, I noticed that the drivers side heated mirror, dosent heat up. however the position adjustment controls work fine. but the passenger one works fine
And
Normally when you go to switch dipped lights on, on the indicator stalk, you would select the switch to Sidelights and then to dipped (and the dipped indicator on the dash would illuminate).
However now, when selecting the sidelights the dipped lights come on along with the dash illuminator., and if you select dipped, there is NO transtion between the transfer (if that makes sense. Ie, if you looked at the front lights, you would not be able to tell you where changing "modes", apart from there is a ever, so slightly, barley noticble increase in brightness,) only noticable if you park it up against a wall and watch when changing "modes"
This is really wierd, has anyone got any suggestions it would be greatly aperciated, Thanks in advance

Thanks for all the info guys. I've replaced the rad cap and (touch wood) the level seems to have stabilised. I'll keep a watching brief on the radiator and the other things as well.
