Rover 800 immobilised

Rover 800 immobilised - dodo
My neighbour's Rover 800 Vitesse (1995) has stpped - never to go again. My neighbour's crime was to change the battery on the car and now it is immobilised and the car wont start! We asked the Rover garage if there was an emergency code that could be accessed through the judicious use of the door lock in particular sequence but the garage said there was no emergency code for the car (they fed the chassis number into the discus system). Where do we go from here? His wifes car is in the garage behind and cant get out and I've lent him our old Punto. Any thoughts appreciated!
