Are hybrid batteries fit for purpose?
You must be tired of people complaining about low mileage hybrid cars failing to start due to a flat battery, but a recent furthur problem produced some surprising information. When my year old Toyota Yaris Cross wouldn't start it flagged up a technical malfunction requiring dealer attention, so I called out the AA who came very promptly. Even without looking at the car the AA technician said it would be a flat battery, which it was, and this surprised me because, although I don't do a big mileage, I do use the car regularly being aware of the problem. However, what surprised me was that he said this was not a unique problem to Toyota (who have downsized the 12v battery) but applies to all makers of hybrid cars. In this case I think it makes them all unfit for purpose. I have previously has two two Toyota Prius which never gave this problem and the AA man said that still seems to be the case. Something seems very wrong somewhere.

A number of owners of hybrid vehicles from various manufacturers have found that the 12V battery can become excessively drained when the vehicle is unused for an extended period of time. Unfortunately this appears to be a decision that manufacturers have taken to fit small capacity batteries to save weight and cost with the downside being this issue. A solar trickle charger is one option to avoid this, as is fitting a larger capacity battery, but this would need to be done with care to ensure it still meets the required manufacturer specifications and does not void the warranty.
