Do these have to be done by the dealer or is it OK to take to your local guy. I am facing about a £60 bill off my Toyota dealer for this indugence. Can there be any comeback wrt the 3yr warranty if a genuine toyota filter and the correct spec oil are used??

Yes this is totally above board and i believe it is now the same for virtually all manufacturers due to a change in block exemption rulings meaning the manufacturer can no longer insist on you having work by main dealer to keep warranty in tact but work must be done using approved parts.

Hi everyone. Just changed the batteries on my key for a P-reg mondeo for the remote central locking. The guy at my local car shop tested it on some machine he has and it worked fine. When I try on the car it only works maybe once out of ten.
I know I can just open it with the key but it would be nice if it worked.
Anyone got any idea as to what might be the problem?

Many thanks,

With respect, these sound like the standard lithium cells and £4 each is expensive. Even well known brands cost nearer the £2 each mark, less if you shop around.

My son's 02 reg Clio suffers from the occasional refusal to turn the engine on the start motor. Battery is ok & no other indications, just no activity from the start motor.
Could this be a problem with the immobiliser chip in the key fob?

Anyone got any experience of this?? Read more

Might be a bad connection on the battery. Had that on a VW once and took me ages to track down. Worth slackening them, move them slightly and retighten.

Considering how we are encouraged to check the oil on a regular basis and top up if necessary, I am finding it difficult to get clear info to help me decide What I should buy.

Corolla diesel d4d.

Toyota Garage tell me Shell helix 10w40 (not what it says in the manual (5w30))

halfords chart says somthing else. If my garage is using 10w40, OK but then I discover there is Shell 10w40 for Diesels. So I don't know if they using the specific Diesel one or the regular or does it matter which one I buy to top up as long as it is helix 10w40 ??? Read more

If I were you I would do what the manual says and use 5W-30.

Garages are hopeless with oil advice, and will tell you to use whatever they have got.

Shell do a 5W-30 oil for Zetec engines, so I would use that.

Some people near where i live have no tax but still use the vehicle. Should i report this? Who do i contact?
Does this also mean that any insurance would be null and void?

Having an MOT may not make you a safer driver, but it means that if you stamp on the brakes in an emergency the car is likely to stop.

The car is jerky when accellerating this is mild in the low gears and speed but when running at say 60 in 5th it is excessive In the last year the turbo has had a full recon and the pump timing has been checked Read more

Sounds like the MAF sensor,(common problem) you'll have to put it on the diagnostic kit to find out exactly.

I am looking at replacing my wifes old Fiesta and thought that we could find a car that could handle our two bikes standing up inside.

When carrying the bikes we would not need the back seats so something like an Audi A2 possibly. What else would have the height without going to an MPV? The car will be used during the week commuting into London so economical and easy to park would be helpful.

Hi, wondering if you can help me out, because this is driving me round the bend!

I have a 1995 Mk1 Mondeo, 1.8 LX.

It seems to have problems starting, but it never really does the same thing twice! so its really hard to pin point.

Sometimes on starting I will get in the car and turn the key, and nothing will happen.. just silence. However the car will act like the key is turned to position 2 on the ignition. (hence lights, heating, radio works).

Sometimes when I go the start to the car, the engine turns over, but fails to ignite, this only occurs when the car hasnt been driven for a few days. It also occurs in wet and dry conditions.
Usually have a second attempt, or a lot of trying it will actually start.

Sometimes, and this happens the most, the car will start, but will idle incrediably low, and infact stall straight after starting.. I then have to restart, and sit there with my foot on the rev's to keep the engine from stalling. Then, what will happen, is I will drive around town, and or drive a long way eg:200 miles, and pull up a junction, (off the motorway) and as soon as it hits idle, it will stall...

All of this happens on and off, and its just totally irregular..

Luckly this week the car has been fine, and starts first time, but then the morning, it didnt.

Im confused, surely this is a combination of things

Any ideas?

Please.... :)

You are right - its a combination of things.

1/ The silence and nothing happening symptom. This is classic bad earth to engine problem. Clean up all the battery terminals, and clean the terminals on the engine to body earth strap.

2/The rest are spark/fueling problems. may be cured when you fix 1 (sparks anyway). YOu need the standard routine of check or renew the plugs, renew leads, distributer cap, rotor arm etc etc.
( I assume a Mondeo of this vintage does not have coil packs)

Anyone had any dealings or any gossip on micronet car showrooms from nottingham? Their prices seem a little too cheap, thinking of getting a diesel yaris from there!

I started working from home 6 months ago and we have decided that we no longer need two cars, therefore I am selling SWMBO's Starlet. I am a bit unsure what to ask for it, having checked Autotrader, simliar cars seem to be advertised anywhere between £800 and £1200, which seems quite high to me, so any opinions welcome:

It is a 1995 M reg Toyota Starlet Kudos 1.3 manual petrol. I would describe it's condition as "very good" to "excellent", although not "mint", after all it's nearly 10 years old. It has recently had an oil & filter change, full valet and had brand new front discs and pads. It has 89k miles on the clock which is below average without being worrying low. It also has sunroof and CD player although no ABS or power steering.

We have had it for about 4 years, her father having had it for about 3 years prior to that. He bought it from Toyota dealer, so I know the history of it really and I have his purchase receipt. Read more
