Could someone please tell me what is meant by higher detergent fuel?

I currently use bog standard BP unleaded (95 RON) but was reading an article the other day which talked about swapping to a higher detergent fuel ... but I don't know what that would be. Local station only sells unleaded (95 RON), super unleaded (97 RON) and diesel.

The driver adds the additive when he loads the tanker at the depot, The tanker will usually have 8 compartments, a quantity of the correct fuel and additive package will be added as per the customer's requirements. Of course, there are variations of the procedure and levels of automation depending on the site.

Hey there,

Im new here so hello to everyone!!!

I own an H Reg Fiesta LX 1.1 - which suits me just fine! Its a good little runner with a good history.

I am looking to find out what type of Petrol i should use for best MPG for my car, i have noticed that when i buy fuel from Tesco i get very low MPG but Esso Unleaded seems to get me further. I am a complete newbie on this matter. I know there are different grades of fuel. But what should i be looking for, for my car?

Also i know there are probably mechanics on this site. I have a quick question. In my Fiesta the fuel gauge is only accurate when i leave it for ages with the ignition on. Is there anyway to improve the reliablilty of the reading while in travel, or shall i just live with it.

thanks for any help

Cheers

dont forget that all petrol stations have different fuel prices so look for the one where you are going to get cheaper fuel.

Hi all

Am currently looking at a 1993 Clio but it has a tapping coming from the engine, which is caused by the tappet valve on the rocker box I have been told. Is this a serious problem or can it be fixed easily?

My wife has a 2002 Seat Ibiza under warranty. The headlamp is misted with water. The garage seems to think this is acceptable. I can't see how a headlamp can function properly like this. Won't it rust at some point? I thought they were supposed to be water tight. What do you think?

I'm going to take the car to another dealer and get them to replace it.

On taking a detour through the Cambridgeshire 'new village' of Cambourne, I was surprised to see several 19mph limits in operation.

Is this some legal quirk, or had the signwriters simply run out of zeros.... Read more

The single carriageway limit for goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes gross has been 40 mph for years. When I was a lorry driver 25 years ago the 40 mph limit was disregarded just as much as now, although lorries were generally less powerful. The industry seemed to work to an unofficial 50 mph limit and bosses scheduled work accordingly.

If an LGV (HGV) is involved in an accident and was exceeding 40 mph when it shouldn't have been, that would probably count against the driver (speed is recorded on tachograph disc).

My own view is that lorries should be allowed to do 50 mph on single carriageways. It would not lead to more accidents as that's what most do anyaway. But the current situation makes a mockery of the 40 limit although I dare say the occasional driver gets done for breaking it. A new 50 mph limit should be enforced more rigorously.

What would be the result of enforcing the existing 40 limit? Safety-wise it would probably slightly reduce the number/seriousness of accidents caused by LGVs but greatly increase the number of accidents caused by impatient overtakers.

Cheers, SS

A bit of advice from any audi driver please.

I'm currently driving a 12 yr old Merc 300sl. I love the car, it has great road presence, everybody clears a path for you! Fantastic in the summer and so relaxing and smoth and easy to drive. BUT - I am doing quite a bit of mileage now and it has to go I think distressing as it might be, it need s a lot of servicing, the repair bill can be high, and the fuel consumption is another story. Anyone want to buy?

Having looked at some impressive diesel cars I really like the Audi A3 2.0 diesel with DSG. I drove an SE for a longish test drive and was impressed by the performance and the transmission.

I like the spec and trim of the Sport which rides on 17" wheels over the SE on 16 inchers and the dealer says the suspension set up is not much different (not as hard as the S-line which has 18" wheels too). I haven't driven a Sport for comparison, and I'm not flavour of the month at the dealers since I mentioned Drive the Deal!

Will I find the Sport spine jarring after the SE and being used to my comfy merc?

My other thought was the Saab 9-3, really enjoyed driving the car which has a good 1.9 diesel and the best seats ever, superb interior too and a great looking car. I'm leaning towards the A3 though as I don't need the extra space in the Saab, I think the Audi residua;ls will be better, and the DSG gearbox.

Any thoughts???

Anyone know anywhere cheaper than Drive the Deal?

Also should I keep the merc till the weather improves to sell, its fantastic with the top down!

I need to change the pads and discs on my E230 front brakes. There is no Haynes manual for the W210 series but dismantling the calaipers was quite straightforward. I hit a snag when trying to remove the old discs. I removed the set screws and tried mallet blows and prying with a crow bar but they are stuck fast. What is the recommended way to free them? Any help gratefully received.

Aprilia

Common problem on the Mercs. They either drop off very easily or they 'weld' themselves on.

What I do is to take a 6" angle grinder and grind slots in the discs, between the wheel studs. You need to carefully grind *nearly* all the way through the disc. Then tap the disc. Once it starts to move at one edge it will come off easily.

Go easy with the hammering though - it leads to spalling of the bearings.

The Octava is of for its first MOT this weekend. I don't expect it to fail, but i've never motted a diesel before.

It will be getting a tank full of somebody or other's premium diesel this evening, I will be 'making progress' the long way to and from work and it will get an italian tune-up before the test on saturday morning.

any other hints or suggestions ?

(anyway what could they connect to on an old diesel anyway?

Pre electonic diesel engine control, a clamp-on sensor which detected the deflection of the high pressure injector pipe as the pressure pulse passes was used to allow electronic speed indication for test purposes.
